Summary: As fun as marketing can be
Review: Any book which finds a way to bring Harvey Wallbanger back into the limelight is an A+ with me.

On a more serious level Seth simply has a way of making simple concepts that escape us seem so easy and enjoyable to learn.

Buy it. Read it. Pass it on!

Summary: ...just don't miss the REAL lesson(s)
Review: Every once in a while I come across an article or excerpt either written by or about Seth Godin and can't help but learn from him.

Granted, everything he puts out is an advert for another product -- either new or existing -- but it's his method of delivering these adverts that get the most from. Rather than merely read and absorb what Seth is putting out there, I see how he's doing it and how I could similarly apply his strategies to my business.

Case in point... Seth didn't allow me to buy Purple Cow. He 'forced' us to buy 12 copies (in these interesting milk cartons) for $60. Why? He wanted me to give the other 11 away and THEN promote him by keeping the cool milk carton in a visible place on my desk.

Did he ask me to do this? No. Did I do it? You bet!

Did the book tell me anything I didn't already know? No. Did it reinforce tried and true methods of promotion that I'd normally overlook in favor of traditional advertising channels? Yes.

Should you get the book? Only if you accept it for what it is.

Summary: Hyped up referral based marketing
Review: All Godin has done here is add a few bells and whistles to the basic referral or word of mouth marketing model.

Essentially this is what the book says:

1. Create a product or service that is so good people will want to talk about it
2. Get centres of influence to use your product and recommend you to the people under their influence (even if you have to pay them to do it)
3. Make it easy for people to recommend and use your product

Having said that the price was right (you can download it for free)!

Summary: New Marketing Rules for the Internet Economy
Review: (By Edward Trimnell, author of "Why You Need a Foreign Language & How to Learn One," ISBN:1591133343)

I have been a Seth Godin fan since I read "Permission Marketing" back in 1999. In "Unleashing the Idea Virus," Godin continues to describe the new ways of thinking that are required for success in the Internet economy.

As Godin reveals in both books, marketing on the Internet is actually a more personal process than traditional marketing, despite the vast expanse of the Internet. The entire process that Godin describes focuses on building connections with individuals and small groups, who will then spread the word about your product or service, thereby creating the "viral" effect.

This book should be in your library if you have any level of interest in the Internet economy, or in starting your own dotcom.

Summary: Makes you think
Review: All of those who read this book in order to find a formula or even a guideline are in for a disappointment. This is not a textbook, this is a book written to give one an idea. The book does not teach you how, or why, it opens up a whole new way of thinking and gives the reader new directions to embrace change, and follow new ideas in order to take the business in a new direction.

This book has given me many things to think about, I view the marketing department in a whole new way, and as someone who has a say in the company, I even bring out new ideas which break the mold and take the company into a new direction.
This book has given me the tools to come up with those ideas.

Summary: A new way of thinking that translates to marketing
Review: This must be one of the best books I've read on marketing. Especially in this day and age.

Remember though, this is not a get rich quick book, nor is it a how I became a success book.

Seth maps out and names what already exists; the idea virus. He this in an extremely comprehensive manner. And it may be the first time some one has actually done this. Sure we all know the power of word of mouth. But no one has actually named the vital components of the word of mouth game.

After naming the vital parts of the idea virus, Seth goes on to show how to use them to create your own marketing machine.

You need some thing to work with for this to work; your website, business, production, etc. Otherwise, this book isn't much use. Though it is extremely interesting and fun! One of the best things about the writer, is he approaches every thing with a fun and down to earth matter.

This book worked for my business using his principles and I know it works for others (I found this book through it's own idea virus!)

Easy to read, it flows well. Nice size too.

Summary: GREAT BOOK
Review: I first started reading the book when it came out and put it back down after about 60 pages. I was thinking at the time that it was good, but mostly rehashing the concepts of the Tipping Point, anatomy of Buzz, etc.

I picked it back up again recently, and couldn't stop. It really extends and makes practical application of the concepts laid out in the other books. The concepts of smoothness, velocity, etc. Most importantly Seth's writing style, lables, and language for this concepts are written in a way that stick in your brain. You keep chewing on them to think of ways to apply them. His last chapters before the Riffs do an excellent job of summarizing them. All of the concepts might not be brand new, but his presentation, packaging, extension, and application of them is excellent. I highly recommend this book and can't wait to read Purple Cow!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Complementary to Purple Cow
Review: If you've read Unleashing, you may also be interested in practical application of how ideaviruses work. Purple Cow, set to be released in May will show you how to transform your business by being "remarkable". Seth shows that many successful business ignore the supposed safety of playing it close and defy conventional wisdom by placing their emphasis, rightly, in standing out from the rest and taking risks -- by remarkable service, by remarkable features or by remarkable design. The key point is that you need to stand out or be ignored. How many times have you chosen to get a snack or go to the bathroom during commercials, or closed a pop-up as without even looking at it? You've got to ask yourself then, do these mass marketing approaches work?

The book points mostly to marketing and design, but has pratical application in other parts of business and personal life. Easy to read (I finished it in less than a day), easier to explain, it provides a foundation for standing out in a me-too world.

Summary: 'Purple Cow' is remarkable! MOOOO...
Review: Well... The book 'Purple Cow' gets released only May 12 but I was lucky to receive a copy through a special offer. This new book of Seth Godin is a remarkable piece of achievement with lots of potential and reach. It is about being remarkable or risk being invisible! It tells the importance of innovative marketing strategies. You will love every page of this book. Actually, you will fall in love by just looking at the book! I completed reading this book in a couple of days as I could not stop reading it. I recommend it to everyone and give it 5 full stars. Be noticeable by noticing this book May 12. I can't wait to see this book come out and make wonders!
