Summary: A msut read for fitness buffs, that's all there is to it
Review: What Dr atkins is to the diet world - "We've been doing it wrong", this book is to workouts.
A friend had sent me the amazon page on this book and at first I made the mistake of not reading all the revies, only the first few, two good, two negative.
Then I saw the book in the bookstore.
As a gym rat of many years, I 've always wondered why competitive bodybuilders would hang out and just talk with the ladies while the ladies were on stairsteppers and staionary bikes. Read this book. You'll find out why.
Two of the three authors are M.D.'s and there's a chpater in the book explaining how being fit and being healty are two different things. Witness Jimm fixx, jogging author, who died at 52, whie jogging, and witness Sir Winston Churchill, who lived over 40 years beyond Fixx's age, while being "obese, a smoker, overate, and drank with abandon."
This testimony alone, on p 167, by a Lisa C. Feldman, sells the book:

"In 1997 I met Fred Hahn who introduced me to Super Burn strength training. I cut out all aerobic exercise and did Slow Burn exclusively. after a couple of months i noticed subtle changes. People who hadn't seen men a while said i looked as though I had lost ten pounds.
My body fat percentage is 4 percent lower than it was when I was doing hours a week of so-called "fat-burning" aerobics. I no longer have the kind of oversue injuries that many people my age begin to complain about. I am in better overall condition at the age of forty eight than I was twenty years ago. I wish i had known then what I know now."
Pretty convincing testimony.

Not only does this book belong in your library, it may replace some -or all- of the workout books you have.

Summary: A must for any fitness enthusiast's library
Review: First a friend had sent me the [Amazon.com] page on this book, reviews included. I read those reviews and thought, "oh well". Then I was in our local bookstore and saw the book and decided to look through it.
I had expected this to be just another take off on Ellington Darden's Super-slow traiing concept. While some of the principles are common to both books, this book stands on its own.
What Dr Atkins is to the diet world - i.e., "We've had it all wrong", this book is to workout books. As a long term gym rat - a very long term- I'd always wondered why the competitive bodybuilders would just hang out and talk with the females while the ladies did the stairsteppers and stationary bicycles, etc...This book explains why.
One of the reviews here hinted that this was just another diet book, not true at all. There's a power eating plan that is all of six pages, with some suggested meals, not recipes.
Two of the three authors are M.D.'s and the book goes into a very sensible explanation of why being fit and being healthy are two different things.
This book is a must for any fitness buff. It may contradict a few things you've learned along the way but so be it. disregard any negative reviews of this work and judge for yourself.
On page 167 of the book, a Lisa C. Feldman says, " In 1977 I met Fred Hahn, who introduced me to Slow Burn training. I cut out all aerobic exercises and did Slow Burn exclusively. After a couple of months, I noticed subtle changes. People who hadn't seen me in a while said I looked as though I had lost ten pounds.
My body fat percentage is now 4 percent less than it was when I was doing hours a week of so called fat-burning aerobics. I no longerhave the kind of overuse injuries that many people my age begin to complain about. I am in better overall condition at the age of forty eight than I was twenty years ago. I wish I had known then what I know now."

Pretty solid testimony if you ask me.

Summary: Revolutionary; wish this was printed years ago
Review: The two negative revies below obvious haven't done any research on this topic, approach, or author. There have been success tories printed in GQ, (editor Art Cooper lost 60 lbs via thi smethod), an editor of Vanity Fair as well. There are plenty of success stories if you take time to look for them.

The premise of this book makes sense, the examples are hard to argue. The author does a great job of making the science of building muscle very clear and easy to understand. By citing specific examples of how other have failed, mistrained, and been miseducated are clear, current, and understandable.

Summary: Best of the mass market slow cadance workout books
Review: Slow cadence resistance training is far and away the best exersize protocol ever developed, and Fred Hahn's book is a great introduction to the benefits of this exercise regimine.

Slow Burn is far superior to Power of Ten. Hahn's book succeeds by giving the reader a well-researched and not overly technical redering of the subtleties of slow motion weight training. His ook is an excellent introduction to this terrific exercise protocol.

Summary: Great book and honest as well
Review: I've heard about this type of training from friends and even called Mr. Hahn in NY months ago for some advice which he freely gave me. When his book was released, and after reading all the positive customer reviews, I bought it. Very well written! Makes total sense. I can't wait to get started on the program.

To everyone reading this review: Mr. Hahn's book is fabulous -- and honest.

Summary: Turns exercise world upside down
Review: Several years back, Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades were instrumental in destroying the myth of the low-fat, high-carb diet. In that regard, they are pioneers in the often-confusing field of nutrition, and have helped countless thousands of people get their health---and waistlines---back on track.

Now the doctors, along with Frederick Hahn, do the same thing for exercise. Forget everything you think you know about aerobics and the "no pain, no gain" mentality behind weight lifting. In exceptional, easy-to-understand detail, they explain how their Slow Burn method not only offers superior metabolic advantages, but how you can achieve them in a mere 30 minutes per week. Their logic behind this seemingly inadequate period of time holds up---it makes sense.

I highly recommend Slow Burn to anyone who has always felt in their gut (no pun intended) that there HAS to be a better, more efficient way to get in shape.

Summary: Definitely The Best Exercise Book I've Ever Owned
Review: Anyone could have written a book on the benefits of slow-movement excercise, few authors could have done it so masterfully. Exceptionally clear, informative, instructive, and most of all, based on facts and hard science, not blind devotion. As a long-time back-pain sufferer, I've truly seen how the approach taught in the Eades' and Mr. Hahn's book can alter a person's physical condition very swiftly and dramatically. I also think the fact that two M.D.'s worked on this says a lot for its integrity, especially when compared to other books and articles I've seen on the subject recently. I would recommend this highly to anyone who wants to be stronger and healthier.

Summary: People should be honest about being honest
Review: I am an advocate of slow motion training. I recently read The Slow Burn Fitness Revolution and found it to be an excellent book on the subject of slow motion strength training.

In reading the Amazon online reviews of The Power of Ten(another book recently published on the subject of slow motion training), I came across the following from a reviewer from Seattle WA: "I took Mr. Zickerman's book because he gives credit to the one man that really made all of this happen, Ken Hutchins. There is no gimmick with either book and they both have an audience. Personally I just like to know that I'm reading something honest."

If you look at the acknowledgments section at the back of Mr. Hahn's book, you will see the following: "The following people made this book possible: Ken Hutchins for his Super Slow technical manual."

The moral of this review is that one should be honest about being honest. Mr.Hahn fully gives credit where credit is due.

Summary: One of the best books ever about exercise.
Review: The Eads have done it again. Just as their Protein Power and The Protein Power LifePlan books were the best books on the low carb lifestyle, they have written [with Fred Hahn] one of the best books ever on exercise. It is concise, clearly written, and presents concepts hertofore only know to a few. One sour note: calling the exercise protocol, Slow Burn, is unfortunate. The truth is -- it is the SuperSlow protocol developed by Ken Hutchins, who gets only a passing mention in the Acknowledgments in the book. I am disappointed that the the Eads acquisced to this slightng of Hutchins and his SuperSlow protocol. Besides being a poor descriptive name, Slow Burn will confuse many who practice the SuperSlow exercise protocol, which is the safest and fastest way to strength train. Just think SuperSlow when your read Slow Burn. To the best of my knowledge, the use of a metronome to pace the Slow Burn [nee SuperSlow] exercises advocated in the book is original -- and very helpful.

Summary: Finally a truthful and sensible exercise book!
Review: With all the bogus and non-sensical exercise books and programs out there it's refreshing to see an honest, straight forward, and sensible exercise book and program. The Slow Burn Fitness Revolution is one of the best exercise books I've ever read. As an exercise specialist with over 20 years of experience I'm very well versed in virtually all the exercise methods currently promoted. I can say without hestitation that Slow Burn is the safest and most effective method to exercise.

In the book, Hahn and his co-authors do an excellent job educating the reader on important concepts such as the differences between fitness and health, dispelling the myth that "aerobic" exercise or "cardio" exercise is the key to fitness, and why strength training is so valuable and important and why strength training should be the cornerstone of every exercise program. The second half of the book details exactly how to perform Slow Burn properly.

About the only negative I can say is that the authors should have -- for the benefit of those unfamiliar with the Slow Burn concept -- begun the book with a clear introduction and explanation to what Slow Burn is and why it's so "revolutionary".

Overall though, I highly recommend this book and hope that it gets the recognition it deserves. Everyone should be exercising like this!
