Summary: Very Helpful
Review: This book was very helpful to me in understanding what type of abuse I have suffered, the impact this abuse has had on my life and my decisions, as well as how to overcome it in order to live a happy healthy life - breaking the cycle. It was very well-written and easy to follow (though the print was very small), as well as interesting and full of facts. What I liked most about this book was that it seems to take you on a journey towards understanding yourself and your abuse pattern. The first chapter offers an overview on the emotionally abused woman and "who" she is, then goes into the different types of abuse so that you can distinguish what type of abuse you have suffered. She then goes into detail about the characteristics of each type of abuse, the common results, and how it has lead you to where you are today. She then finally offers many exercises in cyphoning out all of this pent up anger and hurt in a productive, affective way. i.e. - "Overcoming Destructive Patterns and Reclaiming Yourself." It was a wonderful book.

Summary: Very Thorough
Review: This book worth the read. There were areas of my life I had never addressed as far as dealing w/ the abuse, until I read Engel's book. Emotional abuse tends to get overlooked in this society. Therefore, I recommend this book to anyone who is in or has been in an abusive relationship. Great guidelines, exercises, & ways to address the abuse in your life.

Summary: Absolutely great book on the subject for anyone
Review: Whether you are still questioning if you are a victim of emotional abuse or continuing to work through the issues visited upon you from abusive relationships, this book gives an honest, compassionate, concise overview of the types of emotional abusers, the types of victims and great exercises and wisdom in putting yourself back together and helping to make sure that you do not get yourself back in the same situation again. I recommended this book to my therapist who is now using it regularly with women who have been/are in emotionally abusive relationships.

Even though the title refers to women, this book is applicable for men who have suffered through emotional abuse as well.
