Rating: Summary: a good insight into what's really going on Review: Herb Cohen is a guy that you like, he's very personable and this shows in his book, in fact you can see much of his negotiation tools being used by him to sell his own strategies to you in the book :), he makes the book very personable and human. There's definetly some good advice and strategies we can get from his life and his experiences. But i felt it is mostly him ranting about his own adventures or encounters. With his unique personality his outlook has proven successful, but i don't know how applicable these tools would be to everyone, meaning you may be able to save a few bucks but you won't become a millionare from this book. It does explain a general mindset to approach all negotiations which im sure will make me a more successful negotiator, i just wish he was more clear in how to apply it in my life instead of hearing all his past stories which i cant relate to.
Rating: Summary: Overlook the picture on the cover, It's a great book Review: Herb Cohen wrote a great book. This book delivers what it promises and will help keep you from being taken to the cleaners, whether buying a car, home, whatever. This book is worth every penny
Rating: Summary: This book changed my life Review: I *try* to negotiate everything, and this book helps me do it. It teaches you about the "power of legitimacy" and other factors that go into bargaining. I paid about $5 for this book, this book has paid me thousands in the many things that I have been able to negotiate. i.e. I bought my car for $400 under invoice the first month it came out. All thanks to Herb Rick
Rating: Summary: Best Book on Negotiation Ever. Period! Review: I am back reordering this book to hand out to some new employees and I saw the previous review, which slammed this book. Had it been a Ken Blanchard book, I probably would have moved me (and my cheese) over to the purchase area and forgotten it. However, this book, "You Can Negotiate...." is one of the most influential books I have ever read, with lessons that I use daily in running a 100 mil plus division of a Fortune 1000 company.Bottom line is that this book is the best negotiation book I have ever read. ( And I've read a lot of them... not to mention way too many seminars) Mr. Cohen is entertaining and reveals the common elements of all negotiation, whether it is in business or your personal life. Read it, enjoy it, and learn. It's a classic. Terry
Rating: Summary: best how to book ever ! Review: i have read many books on negotation. this book shoud be required reading for everyone.
Rating: Summary: The picture on the cover is only the begining. Review: I keep reading this book, again and again, can't believe my eyes, that kind of thing. On the cover, Cohen looks powerful, but I had no idea. Sure, there are other "how to" negotiation books, but this ain't one of those. Think of Tolstoy, think of Twain, then, when you are sitting down, think of Cohen. In every way, in every language, I say, Herb Cohen: "Si, Oui, YES!" BUY THIS BOOK!
Rating: Summary: Content copied from others w/o giving credit?! Review: I learned part of my english by listening at least two dozen times to "Effective Negotiating", an 11 tape audio cassette course by Dr. Chester L. Karrass. Since this course is from 1974, I thought I could learn something new from "You Can Negotiate Anything". -- Bzzt - wrong! At least 80% of the material in this book seems to be copied from Dr. Karrass, down to very specific examples and phrases. And Dr. Karrass isn't even mentioned in the acknowledgements! I, for one, will certainly not by any more books from Mr. Cohen.
Rating: Summary: Essential Reading for Everyone Review: I read this book almost 10 years ago after being impressed by it's title. I was wonderfully surprised at how good it was and I hoped that I could put some of the things I learnt into practice just like the author encouraged and illustrated so well. Just now I picked up the book for the second time and not only found that I just couldn't put it down, but I was also pleasantly surprised at just how many of it's teachings I had actually successfully used in my various negotiations since reading the book that first time. It really seems to have worked!
Rating: Summary: excellent Review: i read this book and it is jam packed with tips and advice that really work. plus this book is hilariously funny..a good read!
Rating: Summary: Great book, however be careful when applying your skills. Review: I read this book while attempting to negotiate a contracting raise. While I accept everything that was said, I have a serious dilemma about its title. It is one thing to negotiate the price of a refrigerator and another thing to negotiate one's salary, even though I took Cohen's advice, "Care, but don't care that much." Employers might not negotiate with you if you come off holding too many aces, even if they need your skills and value your contribution. Employers want to feel as if they are in charge and will often prefer a weaker candidate who is manageable. It is funny how lawyers or marketeers do not suffer from this problem. Even the least qualified ones have high expectations. The hard part of negotiating is getting someone to accept you as an equal, even when you have the credentials to back it up. There is an art and relationship (repoire) behind negotiation, and a mere study of this book is not going to let you negotiate anything you want.
