Rating: Summary: A must have! Review: If you in any sports, and over 30 and never learned about stretching? This is it!
Rating: Summary: Stretching is a masterpiece Review: So everytime I ever talked to a personal trainer, at some point they'd recommend some stretches and give me copies of some pages illustrating the kinds of stretches I should do. My friends who went in for physical therapy also received copies in exactly the same distinctive illustration style. Eventually I found the single source for all of the stretching advice I'd been receiving: Stretching, by Bob and Jean Anderson. This book is amazing. The explanations and drawings of how to do the different stretches make it incredibly easy to stretch well. The descriptions of what it should feel like, what it will feel like if you're not doing it quite right, and how you can correct any problems are always right on target. There are stretches for exercising nearly everything, including some muscles it hadn't occured to me I had. But the most valuable part of the book, in my opinion, are the stretching routines designed for everyday and for specific activities. I wake up in the morning to the Everyday Stretches routine, and I start the day feeling fantastic. I follow the recommended routines before new activites and am amazed to find that I'm hardly ever sore anymore. Hooray for Bob and Jean Anderson!
Rating: Summary: The best, most comprehensive, book on stretching anywhere. Review: The book is easy to read and easy to use, and the written descriptions and line drawings are very helpful for someone who wants to stretch correctly (i.e. without injury). The one thing better than the book would be to see Bob demonstrate each stretch personally. Thankfully, Bob and Jean have produced a wonderful video as well as this groundbreaking book. The video offers a 45-minute demonstration of various stretches, then a 14-minute routine of everyday stretches that are sure to limber up the stiffest sleeper in the morning and relax the most stressed worker at the end of the day. I highly recommend both the book and the video. END
Rating: Summary: 20th Anniversary Edition Review: The original edition of this book was a landmark book. The 20th Anniversary Edition has added new stretching routines speicifally for different sports activities. The drawings have been updated, as well. The drawings are the best part of this book detailing how to do the stretch and where the tension points are. This book is for everyone, for the athlete and the couch potato, alike. A book like this landmark work will be around for its 100th Anniversary, not just its 20th.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book! Review: This book has simple and easy to understand stretches that get the job done. I make copies of pages to give to my friends, and recommend the book to them.
Rating: Summary: Feel Better! Review: This book incorporates the full compendium of fundamental stretching movements that many of us may have forgotten as we pursue the newest class at our gym. I have had a weak lower back for some years and always search for exercises that help alleviate the pain and stiffness. Bob Anderson's book was perfect for helping me eliminate back pain, as well as speed up muscle recovery through strategic stretching in the evening and morning. I feel sooo much better even after only a few days. I feel that my body has gotten stronger, which is surely the result of muscles that are more flexible and in my own control. There is no downside with this book-if you do the exercises, you will surely feel more comfortable and stronger. You will not have any negative effects...Buy it!
Rating: Summary: Excellent guide to flexibility Review: This book is a great "how to" for warming up, fitness, and flexibility exercises. It's diagrams and quick, simple instructions make it very easy to use. After about three weeks of using the various exercises my body feels better than it ever has!
Rating: Summary: An important tool in my medical practice Review: This book is complete, simple, effective. I have prescribed it for patients from 25 year old triatheletes to 90 year olds rehabbing from a hospital stay. I (50 year old too-sedentary doc) use it daily. Its the best.
Rating: Summary: Best book on stretching. Recommended by Everyone! Review: This book was given to me and recommended to me about a hundred times over many years, by experts in a variety of fields, including medicine, physical therapy, fitness trainers, etc. It is the best. A must for anyone who is stretching. I also recommend highly EFFORTLESS WELLBEING by Evan Finer as one of the best books on attaining the calm and relaxed body and mind associated with flexibility (of body and mind and...). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED must read materials!!
Rating: Summary: Easy to use, fun, and very sensible Review: This book was recommended to me in the early 80's by a yoga instructor, and over the years I've found it immensely helpful. Even today, when the benefits of moderate and regular exercise are well known, too many people still believe that you should "go for the burn" and "no pain, no gain." Anderson isn't your high school football coach: the exercises he recommends will, if practiced regularly, increase your strength and flexibility without agony or the risk of injury. His stretches are effective on their own, or you can use them to supplement other types of exercise. And they're fun, too: a good stretch, done properly, should be pleasurable rather than painful! The book itself is very well designed: the text provides just enough explanation, the illustrations are clear, and the large format allows you to keep the book open (and out of your way) while you do the stretches. This is a program you can follow for your whole life -- it's not just for young jocks. Highly recommended.
