Rating: Summary: free riding rubbish Review: Would you buy a rubber screwdriver because it was marked "George Bush Tools Inc."? I hope not. When will people stop buying "branded" junk? This minibook is far inferior to plenty of nutritional guides available out there. Get off this Atkins rage.
Rating: Summary: Great guide to low carb foods. Great supplement to the book Review: Finding quality low carb foods can be difficult. This new Carbohydrate gram counter by the late Dr. Atkins simplifies the process and permits you to select quality, low carb foods that goes beyond the carb gram counter in Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution.I highly recommend this book and Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution.
Rating: Summary: A great asset to the atkins diet... Review: While on the first induction phase, the atkins diet can be simple to figure out. But as you get a bit past the first two weeks calclulating out carbohydrates can get a bit complicated. I was surprised at what had carbohydrates and how much it actually had. This book was a big help to me. And its small size allowed me to carry it around and pull it out when i needed to...without being *obvious*... This book would be helpful for anyone on a low carb/no carb eating plan, not just atkins plan...
Rating: Summary: Great little book to have Review: Small, and convenient - you can carry it anywhere. If you're serious about counting carbs, get this book.
Rating: Summary: Incomplete, poor measure choices Review: This pricey pocket guide disappoints as often as it informs. Dr Atkins reprises an error from his New Diet Revolution: he measures solids as liquids. For example, during the Induction phase, he recommends three cups ("loosely packed") of salad or two cups salad and 2/3 cup cooked vegetable. Doc: "cups" are for liquids! Tell me how many ounces!! This really rings true when he listes cooked items. This tiny guide repeats the error. I don't want to try stuffing my cooked carrots in a cup measure: tell me how many ounces! Most of us have a scale with a tare feature. Don't make me try to "loosely" pack a measuring cup with the endive leaves I want to leave whole to accept a stuffing. Sheesh. Don't get me wrong: I LOVE the diet. It works. But if you charge $... for a carb counter, use WEIGHTS for solids and make it more than a couple of pages per category (it really could be far more complete).
Rating: Summary: Handy and convenient. Review: I'm glad that Atkins wrote this little book. I carry it with me all the time and order my business lunches and dinners based on the carb count available in this booklet. My wife also uses her copy to make up our grocery list and takes it with her to the store to determine what foods to buy so our family can maintain the low carb lifestyle. I also recommend Atkins newsest book; Atkins for Life and of course the original Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution.
Rating: Summary: Quick pocket reference for the diet-conscious. Review: If you've started the Atkins diet, or at least read the diet book, then you already realize the importance of counting the carbohydrate grams you consume. Please allow me to clear up some FAQ's: 1. This book will not teach you how to do the Atkins diet - for that, read Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. 2. This book will show you total carbohydrate, fat, and protein gram counts for standard portion sizes of general or common foods. For instance, there is a general listing for "fig" but not "Kadota fig" or "Mission". If you are into more exotic fare than the standard American foods listed - say for instance that you like obscure asian fruits like or you're a oeniphile who is interested in the carb count of 60 different varieties of French wine- then you will have to do research for the carbs in your special interest on your own. 3. This book will not make specific recommendations as to which ones to avoid, eat more of, etc. - that's not its job. Instead, you are allowed to make those decisions for yourself based on the information presented and your individual allowance of daily carbs. 4. This book does not list calories because the Atkins diet is qualitative, not quantitative. 5. This book will, however, be a quick on-the-spot reference guide for Atkins dieters. It is designed to be portable and easy to understand at a glance when you need information in a hurry. Are there any flaws? Yes. For one thing, IMHO, the price could come down a bit considering that this book is a very small, almost the size of those supermarket pocket books at the checkout counter that cost only 99 cents or so. Also, it would have been helpful if Dr. Atkins had included the fiber content along with the fats, carbs and protein so that one could calculate total impact carb grams and make more educated decisions. Still, I believe this is the best carb gram counter out there for low-carb dieting purposes. I find myself consulting it quite often.
Rating: Summary: carry it everywhere! Review: I love this book. It is a great reference book and small enough to carry in my purse. Helps me when I am grocery shopping or dining out. Actually, I lost my first copy and immediately purchased another.
Rating: Summary: A more comprehensive guide is needed. Review: The Atkins diet is a regime that works for many or most people. For me, I have gotten back to the weight I was in high school by following the Atkins program. I am a true believer. As followers of Atkins know, the one thing you have to be pretty conscientious about is counting how many grams of carbohydrate are in your diet. While this book is helpful for that, it is far from complete. For example, I like to drink wine. This book only lists a view varieties of alcoholic beverages as regards their carbohydrate gram count. What I was hoping for when I bought this book was something that might have contained say, 3 or 4 dozen varieties of white wine and their gram counts. But no. Same with salad dressings--it would be great to have listings by brand, with dozens of brands. Once again, this book only contains several brands. This book is somewhat better than the gram count section contained at the back of Dr. Atkins book, (Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution) but not a lot better. While this book may be the best available, someone out there would do well to publish a much more comprehensive guide. Adherents of the Atkins program would probably snap it up. The Atkins diet program is a program that works as Dr. Atkins describes it in his book. A comprehensive guide to carbohydrate counts in brand-name foods would be helpful, but this guide falls short.
Rating: Summary: Is this the best they can do? Review: Very disappointing little book - almost a pamphlet. I would have expected this to be the "definitive" book on net carb values, but it looks to be little more than you can find in the Atkins book. Frustrating how many things you *can't* find in here. I ended up buying another book that didn't show net carbs, but included many more entries and included fiber grams, making it easy to calculate net carbs.
