Summary: losing slowly but surly
Review: I was on a low-fat high carb diet for a few years, and just like she says you lose weight at first, then you gain. I was having a hard time figuring out what I was doing wrong. I exersise at least 3 times a week but always kept on gaining. My mother-in-law had this book and it looked intresting so I bought it. I couldn't beleive that you could eat bacon and lose weight. I have only had a hard time with the sugar cravings but I have lost inches. I am sleeping better, and have more energy. The foods you eat ( eggs, cheese, meat, etc.) keep you fuller for a longer period of time. Even though sugar is hard to give up I am still going to try. If you are stuck in a diet rut get this book. If any one can give me tips on how to cut the sugar cravings e-mail me at stough@chorus.net

Summary: WARNING -- Too Many Incorrect Biochemical Statements
Review: Lowcarb is a great diet. And this book contains some important concepts for lowcarb dieters (and those making lowcarb a way of life.) However, I was so disappointed to pay for a book that contains so many incorrect biochemical references. For example, p.22 states that "fats cannot be used for brain fuel."

It is unfortunate that the lowcarb diet is becoming popular but that "ketosis" can be so misunderstood. Ketones are made when fat breaks down (an intermediate stage of fat breakdown.) They are not poison. They are used as fuel by most of the body's tissues including the brain. Ketones are preferred by the heart actually. In the breakdown of fat, ketones are produced and used by the body as fuel. The ketones not used by the body as fuel are then released in the urine, stool and breath. These ketones (being incompletely burned fat) are a method by which we can get rid of unwanted fat without having to actually burn it off.

This basic biochemical process (check any physiology/biochemistry text) is totally missed by the author.

Do yourself a favor. Search the (free) internet for physiology/biochemistry resources on lowcarb diets, fat metabolism, insulin, glucagon, etc and learn the process for yourself. This knowledge coupled with knowledge of your own unique body characteristics will help you fashion a diet that will succeed for you. Regards.

Summary: Casting my vote for throwing away all other "diet" books
Review: This book is my family food bible. I am reading it for the 4th time. There is so much valuable info to absorb it all. My husband & I are very happy to eat this way the rest of our lives. (13 years of low-fat caused nothing but weight gain) I agree with other reviewers that it is hard to stop feeling guilty about butter & bacon but it passes & cravings for sugar & starches really do go away completely, and quickly. I passed up birthday cake at a party recently, because I was honestly not interested in having it. As a patient in the book says, I can remember cakes etc with fond memories but have no cravings for such things anymore. This book is not a diet plan, it is a biology lesson and an owners' manual for humans. We poison our bodies daily because no one ever taught us properly how our digestive systems work. I was shocked to read that our bones get more dense and therefore heavier as we age and so it is normal to weigh more each decade. This book should be the text for high school health class and a mandatory course. Teenage girls, especially need to know these facts. What Dr. Schwarzbein's ideas need now is more publicity. Why have so few people heard of her? Why do people look shocked when I tell them the secret to my new size is higher fat and protein? The media needs to get on the bandwagon and reverse some of the damage done by a decade of low fat publicity. It's time to tell the parents who are unknowingly harming their children with diet pop, that aspartame is dangerous in the quantities we are subjected to. It's time to go back to 3 square meals a day! Bravo Dr. S

Summary: The Last Resort
Review: Over the years, the stack of books by my bed has grown: The Zone, Eat Right for Your Blood Type, Potatoes Not Prozac, Gluten Free Cooking, Weight Watchers 123, Fit for Life, Geneen Roth. Each of these books has been helpful to me, but none more so than The Schwarzbein Principle. My goal is to stop thinking about food and just enjoy it. And this is the tool that can help. Schwarzbein's thoughts are not revolutionary, nor are they secret. They are simple: balance, balance, balance.

I am only 44 but until recently have felt 144. As I ease off the man-made carbs and substitute whole grains and good fruits, I am more energetic (now I WANT to do exercise; if you knew me you'd know what a shocker that is...), a vascular problem is easing away, I sleep better, I am happier and less crabby, and I get out of bed easier. Oh and I am losing weight, slowly and steadily. I can now finally clean up the stacks next to my bed: I have found the last resort and am grateful to Ms. Schwarzbein for offering it to me.

Summary: Best Diet Book in Print
Review: The Schwartzbein Principle is by far the best book on nutrition for non-professionals. It explains why low fat diets are not delivering what they promised. She gives concise information on the insulin/glucogon relationship and stresses the importance of keeping blood sugar in an acceptable range. She gives details of case studies and tells the reader that it may take as long as one year for some people to see results on the healing plan. Yet, some who have tried the diet for six months are giving up because they did not get the results they expected. The problem is what they expected, not the results. I am a fitness specialist, and I can tell you that most who complain of poor results have not included adequate exercise in their plan. Exercise and diet are two equal havles of a lifetime wellness plan. Dr. Schwartzbein stresses both aerobic and resistance exercise throughout her book. I am a 53 year old male who has been using the wisdom gained from her book, and I have good muscle tone and 10% body fat because I include exercise. My hat is off to Dr. Schwartzbein. Bravo! Sincerely, Alan Hawkins

Summary: Mixed feelings!
Review: I tried this programme for 8 weeks because I thought the book made sense. Although not diabetic and not having had a problem with cholestrol (I'm 31), I do have polycystic ovary syndrome and definite symptoms of hyperinsulinism, so felt this was worth a serious try. I did lose 5 or 6 lbs, (I need to lose about 22lbs), definitely firmed up, looked less 'puffy' and perhaps even had more energy. The sugar lows all but disappeared between meals too. Ultimately though, this diet failed for me because accepting foods like bacon/ sausage and eggs, butter, cream and meat being such a significant part of the regime, was too unnatural for me to adapt to. I did try and even enjoyed it a lot of the time but it never felt inherently natural to my body. Swallowing a plateful of the aforementioned before eating my eagerly awaited ration of half an apple or whatever, did not feel right! I've been off the programme now for 3 or 4 weeks and haven't gained a pound, so there is life after Schwarzbein! On the positive side, I have learned and incorporated parts of her programme into my lifestyle and am grateful to her for that. In particular, I'm far more zealous with my vitamin and calcium supplements (though not anti-depressants!), have increased my lean protein significantly, have (as is so fashionable) cut back on my carbohydrate intake (particularly processed carbs) and have added more fat to my diet in the form of olive oil, avacado pears etc.etc. rather than saturated fats like butter and cheeses. For me it is about moderation and doing what feels right. Undoubtedly Dr. Schwarzbein has an important message - ultimately its probably best followed with individual adaptation if it is to succeed for you?

Summary: This is a wonderful book
Review: Dr Schwarzbein calls her plan a "healing" program, and it truly is. I feel like I have the permission to eat real food again. And eggs--I've never been much of an egg eater, but now I'm learning to enjoy them, not to mention how to cook them!

Her nutritional information really makes sense. Last year I lost 45 pounds on a popular weight loss program, but a few months ago I noticed the pounds creeping on again. I responded to this by going even lower-fat, cutting out meat, and stuffing myself with fat-free carbs. And running. I got nowhere.

I heard about this book and figured I had nothing to lose. I certainly have lost the weight I'd regained, but even better, I feel great! It's amazing how the craving for carbohydrates goes away.

My parents have diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. I *know* I'm at risk for these things. Thank you, Dr. Schwarzbein.

Summary: READ THIS BOOK!
Review: I LOVE this book! For the first time, I have found a book that pulls it all together. This should be the last book on nutrition and diet that you will ever have to purchase.

Dr. Schwarzbein makes sure that her readers clearly understand the processes of the body. As an endocrinologist, she knows what glands secrete which hormones, and how they all work together. In simple, clear language, she explains hyperinsulinism, insulin resistance, low-serotonin state, and obesity, as well as balanced nutrition, good and bad fats, good and bad carbohydrates, and how to put it all together. This is a comprehensive plan for life.

There is a new discussion group for the Schwarzbein Principle on the web. Find it at http://pub8.ezboard.com/bschwarzbeinwinners

Summary: Don't diet - read this book instead
Review: I found this book absolutely facinating. Not only does Schwarzbein give you an easy to understand look at how your body deals with the foods you give it but she provides a great and simple to understand approach on how to start acheiving the maximum from yourself. All the years that we have been bombarded with low fat, low calorie, heart disease and other information have brainwashed most of us into doing the wrong thing...you don't have anything to lose by reading this book.. and even if you don't like her way of eating, you will learn an incredible amount of useful info about your body, cravings, addictions and more.
