Summary: Finally a diet for life
Review: Finally a diet for life! I have lost 18 pounds in 2 1/2 months on this program. Never one time have I starved, and as a bonus, I finally have lost my sugar cravings! My triglycerides, which used to be high, are now an amazing 67 points!! My total cholesterol is finally under the magic 200 number for the first time in years.

This diet works, and I recommend it to anyone trying to lower cholesterol and stave off heart disease! This is not just another weight loss program - rather its a program to get healthy and stay that way.

Summary: DON'T PAY ANY ATTENTION TO THE "1 STAR"REVIEW,IT IS WRONG
Review: Contrary to the previous incorrect review, this program is not an all or nothing program. Nowhere in this book does Dr. Schwarzbein say that you have to be "perfect"to follow the healing+maintance program, but you do have to be willing to give up bad habits that are destroying your health and sometimes it is easier for some people to dismiss something, such as Dr. Schwarzbein's program, than it is to take full responsiblity and give up bad habits(comfort foods) that give us so much pleasure, but destroy our health. Dr.Schwarzbein educates you and tells you that any change for the better is better than no change. I highly recommend this book to anyone, because it is great!

Summary: Liked THE MENOPAUSE DIET book better.
Review: I found a similarity between Dr. Schwarsbein's book and Dr. Larrian Gillespie's. But, The Menopause Diet was an easier, friendlier read that told me what I needed to know to fix my own diet and not some pie-in-the-sky, "Gee, if I were only perfect," model. Everyone's different, but Dr. Gillespie explained how we get that way and what to do about staying that way, better.

Summary: Back to Basics
Review: A little miracle in the making. My husband and I (who are not overweight) started this plan in search of a way to lower his skyrocketing tryglycerides. It took some convincing that fats were okay to consume, but the unexpected benefits such as increased energy levels, uninterrupted sleep, increased alertness and leveled hormones were much to our surprise. I had no idea that I was so protein deprived, now with eating bottles of nut butters (always a taboo) and cheeses, overdry skin is a problem no more. There was absolutely no desire to eat sugars and caffeine (i was a 5-cupper a day)...the biggest shock of all. Now I finally understand why my father, a traditional (fat) loving Dutchman who has consumed eggs, bacon and cheeses all his life, at age 78 has no cholesterol problems....finally had to admit to him that he was right after all. Hope this method of whole eating reaches every American....and that the medical industry will embrace and advocate simple (no processed) eating. Maybe this philosophy can rub off into simple living too...just a thought!

Summary: This book saved my life and returned me to rigorous health
Review: Before reading this book I weighed 314 lbs, my blood sugar was at 300+, and my tri-glycerides were off the charts. 5 months later, after reading the book and following the principles, I weigh 260 lbs, my b.s. is 85, and my tri... are 50. Remarkable! I had full blown Type II diabetes, which was going untreated; and today I feel as good as when I was 32 yrs old (I'm 53, now). My whole family has developed Type II diabetes in their mid 50's, and I was following suit, before reading Diana's book.

As my weight decreased, I began to resume the active lifestyle that I craved. I walk or do some form of exercise 30 minutes every day. I no longer use the elevator in my office building and park my car about 1 block from work. All these things were impossible for me until I read and put into practice the concepts in "The Schwarzbein Principle".

I was killing myself with a high carbohydrate low protein/low fat eating program. Schwarzbein's program not only makes sense, but it works for me!

Summary: If she is right, this is a gift
Review: Besides her brilliance, Dr. S's greatest asset is coauthor Deville--I say that as a medical writer. The clarity and simplicity Deville brings to this book are what sell the great ideas. Much of what Dr. S says can be supported in literature beyond what she cited, BUT there are experts in lipids and blood pressure and diabetes who take other supportable positions--for example, that hyperinsulinemia is not necessarily a cause of insulin resistance or diabetes or heart disease, but part of a whole syndrome ("syndrome x") that includes these factors, whose relationships are unknown. But if her thesis is right, Dr. S offers a great gift I hope millions will read. I'm at about 7 weeks (still "healing"). Sugar craving disappeared 2nd day. Now 4 lbs. lighter, 1 1/2" off from waist, less irritable bowel symptoms (like, NO gas), reawakening of love of flavors and cooking. Old friend just asked if I'd had a facelift. (To previous reviewer: cheesecake? do you have a recipe for one without sugar?)

Summary: I finally understand the seratonin connection and cravings!
Review: I keep up on most of the current books about diet and nutrition because that is what my degree is in. Also, I use myself as an experiment with these plans. I can honestly say this is the best book I have read in recent memory about nutrition and the insulin and seratonin connections. Dietitians will cringe at what the doctor has to say, but she is right. I began following this plan and cravings that I had disappeared the same day. You really can see changes that quickly. I am not overweight, but do struggle with cravings and mood swings. I believe this plan can help me long term and it is a plan people can live with. Some programs are too intense with computations, etc. This plan is simple to follow and the recipes in her cookbooks are great, too.

Summary: Great plan but needs more how-to explanation
Review: I've struggled with those immovable last 10 pounds for years - I ate low-fat, I exercise 5-6 days a week, the weight wouldn't budge. After trying Dr. Schwarzbein's plan for a month I've lost about 5 pounds, and it's unbelievable easy. Best of all, you're not left feeling hungry or deprived. The explanations of the effects of insulin resistance are very well done and easy to understand.

Having said that, I think the chapter on how to put the plan in action needs to offer better, more detailed explanations. I wasn't quite sure at first how many carb grams I needed, and I still don't know how many carb grams I'll need on the maintenance plan. The book says that at the maintenance stage you don't decrease carbohydrates below metabolic needs, but I have no idea what that would be. Those are the kinds of things that need to be explained better, but other than that, it's an excellent program, and I highly recommend it.

Summary: Everything Schwarzbein says in this book is true!
Review: I started eating three months ago according to the Schwarzbein Principle. I wasn't overweight, but I was a little "thick around the middle" and had a lot of fatique. I also had very high tryglycerides. (I was eating a lot of high-carbohydrate, vegetarian foods.) After three months I can report that my energy level is much better, my trygycerides improved very quickly and are now almost normal, my cholesterol dropped by 27 points and the ratio of HDL to LDL also improved. (Given all the fat I've been eating, this is amazing, but true!) Oh, I almost forgot, I also lost about 8 pounds and now have a slim, flat stomach without even trying. I'm also never hungry, and I no longer crave ice cream, cookies, or sugared drinks. My favorite dessert is now cheescake with real whipped cream. I also eat lots of meat, eggs, cheese as well as lots more vegetables. This book is contrary to everything that you've been taught about food, fats, low-fat diets, etc. But everything Schwarzbein said has proven to be true. Fat doesn't make you fat or cause all those health problems! The real culprit is sugar and the insulin it produces.
