Summary: Eye-opening information for curious pet owners
Review: Actually it should say "co-habitants" not owners as those of us with a couple of critters in the household know that we don't "really" own them.... The book is an excellent resource for anyone who is interested in getting a different opinion about how to treat their pets (dogs and cats only) than what we hear from commercial sources or "average" veterninarians. It not only approaches every subject related to "pet-keeping" but (my favorite parts) there are sections on foods (and how to prepare healthy, home-made meals in minutes). Very detailed on illnesses and injuries (hope never to use that information..). Perfect for people who believe in (or at least are willing to try) a holistic approach. I just wish they would write a book that would keep me as healthy as my pets as easily...

Summary: The best book to start with for Natural Pet Care
Review: Ok, Ok, if it's the best book, why only an 8? Because once you read this book you will want more. There's only so much you can fit in one book but the Pitcairns have managed to give a very readable and very usable introduction to the many options the pet owner has in natural pet care. The recipes and feeding advice alone make it worth adding it to your bookshelf. When people ask me about natural pet care, this is ALWAYS the first book I recommend.

Summary: Fabulous! Truly, fabulous!
Review: This is THE book on natural pet care, referenced in so many, many books written after this one. Pitcairn's writing is easy to understand, his ideas simple to grasp. One need not have prior knowledge in natural care to appreciate this book. And, this book is wonderful for the expert as well. A holistic vet I met recommended I read this book, and I'm sooo glad I did. Hope you'll read it too.

Summary: A "must-have" on the shelf of every dog or cat companion
Review: This book was actually an "upgrade" for me as I had the Pitcairns previous addition. I am thankful this husband and wife team decided to update their work as it was needed. The old book was written in an age when fewer people had access to good quality natural food stores with their now common staples of herbal and homeopathic remedies. Reflecting recent research, and continuing the constant educational crusade of alerting the human companions of dogs and cats to the truth about pet food, the Pitcairns continue to offer alternatives to highly-processed, poor-quality food that literally kills (or drastically shortens the life) of our beloved dogs and cats.

Like many of the reviewers for this book, I could regale you with real-life stories of my previously unhealthy pets (adopted through animal shelters or rescue societies) who were changed by altering their diets, much to the astonishment of their veternarians. I would rather alert you to the fact that, as with everyone, what an animal eats is crucial to its health and two of my wonderful animal companions (a cat given up for a allergic (human's that is) reaction and a dog with chronic skin problems with big vet bills attached) would not have been given up had their previous owners spent approximately 8 dollars more a month on either a higher quality food or fresh food easily made into a raw-foods diet. For anyone with cats interested in exploring their animal's health in depth (or who are endangered of needing to give up a cat due to a family members allergic reaction), I would also strongly encourage you to buy Anitra Frazier's The New Natural Cat.

Summary: If you have a pet you need this book
Review: This should be required reading for every dog and cat owner. It is a marvelous resource.

It is written from the viewpoint of veterinary science that embraces the holistic methods of homeopathic, herbal and alternative therapies. There is a whole quick reference section on ailments. One of the things I admire about this book is that he isn't reticent about telling you to seek veterinary care in many instances. The section on emergency care is equal to the information in the US Veterinary Associations guidebook on dogs.

I'm not that knowledgeable about tissue salts and homeopathic but the herbal remedies seem to work well. He also recommends the Bach Flower remedies. I have tried those and they work well.

There is an excellent section on alternative diets. The updated version of the book has updated information on vitamin requirements. The recipes are tasty. However, forewarned is forearmed, you will have healthy cats and dogs with great coats and lots of energy that will never, ever eat processed dog food again. They will starve first. Really. They will lay emaciated on the kitchen floor just waiting to hear all of those ingredients being pulled out of the fridge.

He also includes a list of suppliers of all of the remedies he uses as well as holistic Veterinary training and organizations. A long reading list.

This is a wonderful book that (again) every pet owner should have.

Summary: One of the Best
Review: This is one of the best books I have ever seen on caring for pets. It is a must for everyone's bookshelf. Once you read it, you'll never again feed commercial pet food to your beloved animal companion, and will help him/her live much longer and healthier

Summary: Wonderful, Useful, Easy to understand
Review: Natural Health for Dogs and Cats may seem like a new idea but it isn't. I have found that this book has been very helpful with the care of my 3 dogs and 1 cat.

All of the information is easy to understand and it all makes sense.

I've seen some natural pet book that will make you take a step back but this one is clear and the author really knows her stuff.

Thank You!

Summary: Life-saving help for my schnauzer
Review: When my schnauzer was very ill a naturopathic vet in our area recommended that I purchase this book. Thanks to the excellent advice from Dr. Pitcairn my dog went on to live a healthy, happy life for an additional 6 years. I made the natural diet recommended in the book for him for those 6 years and used the natural remedies at various times. I continue to use this book often for all of my animals. It is literally a 'life-saver'.

Summary: useful overall source book for your dog
Review: this book is decent in that it covers a lot of information. if you're looking for info on the overall health of a dog, this isn't bad. but if your looking for info on dog diets, then i would choose another book. the info on feeding/diets was very confusing for me, and i think for someone who's new to the idea of feeding raw or homecooked, this isn't what you need.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: one of my three staples
Review: Excellent, every animal owner should have this book, No matter how many times I purchase a new book I keep going back to this book and The Nature of Animal Healing by Martin Goldstein. I have given this book as a gift many times. A must have for all animal lovers
