Rating: Summary: initial enthusiasm for book has faded with time Review: When I read the reviews of countless other women who are convinced that this book is the panacea for all menopausal and perimenopausal concerns, I have to wonder how long they have tried the recommendations. I bought this book over a year ago, and initially had the euphoria that came with trying the suggestions in the book. I finally had to discontinue the progesterone because of significant weight gain (after no changes in diet)and incompatibility with the thyroid medication I was taking. Contrary to Dr. Lee's findings in the book (taking progesterone may actually decrease the need for thyroid medication)I found that taking progesterone and the medication for hypothyroidism were completely incompatible (I had to decrease the thyroid medication to tolerate the progesterone, and rather than my TSH levels stabilizing, they shot back up to where they were before taking thyroid medication). When I wrote to Dr. Lee regarding the incompatibility of thryroid medicines and progesterone, as well as the significant weight gains (the weight gain occurred while I was still on my standard dose of thyroid and just added the progesterone), I got NO RESPONSE. Take his advice with a grain of salt and realize that no one plan fits all.
Rating: Summary: A Narrow View of Menopause Approaches Review: As a holistic nurse who has practiced complementary approaches and taught women self-care measures for menopause for more than 20 years, this book seems too narrowly focused. There is so much more going on during the menopause process than this book mentions. For the past year, I've hosted the Menopause web site at bellaonline.com and the women who ask me questions bring up everything from exercise to herbs to stress reduction to insomnia and more. For a book to be truly useful to them, I think it needs to focus on these aspects, too. Rating: Summary: Learned the *very* hard way - Please Be Careful! Review: Dr. Lee's book convinced me to try natural progesterone, and it was one of the worst decisions ever. After only one month of use, I developed blood clots in my legs, and became so ill that it has taken over six months to recover. Progesterone cream builds up in your tissues over time and can make you very, very sick. Do not believe it when you read that there are no side effects and it is impossible to overdose. Know that the progesterone you're putting on your skin, although "natural", is capable of having all the same effects as the progesterone in birth control pills and RU-486 ~ in other words, you're using something with serious dangers connected to it. Please, please be careful. Get Barbara Seaman or Ellen Grant, MD's books for better information.
Rating: Summary: A Must Read For men! Review: This book is the clearest text on hormones that I have ever read. I bought it because of the very excellent graphics that showed me the hormone generating scheme in our bodies. I started using natural progesterone along with DHEA as therapy for "male menopause" and I am delighted with the results. This Homone Replacement Therapy treatment does for me as a 63 year old male what Viagra is supposed to do without the side effects. I have given copies of the book to my daughter, 30, and many other men and women. Thank you Dr. Lee. I hope you write a book for men.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST EVER! Review: This book is definitely one to read. Any women over 50 needs to read this book. I learned SO much from Dr. Lee. What I liked is that Dr. Lee was a physician with a practice and REALIZED what was happening to his female patients. He actually listened to what they were saying and acted upon it. His research is good and it makes sense. A medical book that makes sense is very unique. I read the book and made my own decisions. For the first time in 7 years I am sleeping THROUGH the night! I have NO hot flashes, No night sweats and no side effects! The weight is slowly coming off and I am feeling so much better than I have in years and I have only been on the natural progesterone for 1 month. Now to get my own physician to read this book and to listen to what his other female patients are saying! This is a must read book.
Rating: Summary: This book gave me hope again Review: Dr. Lee's book has saved the quality of my life since 1998. I was given birth control pills, Provera, diuretics to stop the swelling from Provera and the Pill. I thought I was going crazy. Then I found Dr. Lee's book and found a doctor to prescribe the natural progesterone and my symptoms went away. No more tears, bloating, swelling, sore breasts, angry episodes, night sweats, binges, hot flashes, or hopelessness. Dr. Lee's book helped me to understand that my body would not tolerate the pharmaceutical companies' progestines that were patented to replace the natural progesterone. It is a money issue and so many women suffer from using man-made progestins that are in the Pill and Provera. Use Dr. Lee's recommendations on Natural Progesterone.
Rating: Summary: Owner's Manual for Mature Female Body Review: Women over the age of 35 all need to read this book. Fortunately, the MD who wrote it keeps the technical language simple. Dr. Lee is not a slave to any drug company, and his personal research covers a long period of time. He is very frank about what further research does need to occur... reading this is like talking to a really good, honest doctor. Sleep disruption, depression, irritability, lack of energy, swelling breasts, and other symptoms may actually be the result of an easily-remedied hormone imbalance. Many do not know that natural hormones, in proper dosage, have no harmful side effects, and thought that prescription HRT (hormone replacement therapy), with its many known risks and side effects, was the only way to combat the ageing process in women. Dr. Lee shows that ALL women can benefit from a very simple natural hormone supplement. Do not be deterred by the title. Pre-menopausal women need the data in this book. An excellent explanation of the monthly hormonal cycle is in this book.
Rating: Summary: Vital Information for Every Woman Review: Other reviewers have written about the incredible results they are getting with natural progesterone cream. Six months ago, I started using 20 mg. every night before bed and almost from the first I began to feel more relaxed, sleep better, and my hot flashes have almost completely disappeared. One added bonus is that after 4 months my doctor was able to reduce my thyroid med. dosage for the first time in 20 years! Of course, I use a natural form of thyroid (Armour), so women taking synthetic forms of thyroid may have an entirely different response. Natural hormones seem to complement and enhance each other, like the original hormones in the body did when we were younger. A good book on this is Dr. David Brownstein's book "The Miracle of Natural Hormones," and Dr. Erika Schwartz's book "The Hormone Solution" is also helpful.
Rating: Summary: A good starter look at bioidentical hormones Review: Dr. Lee was one of the first to reveal the difference between natural progesterone and progestins. Progestins are one of the synthetic ingredients in Prempro, the HRT drug used in the WHI studies that many women mistakenly think is the only way to replace hormones. Surprise! Hormones that are identical to the ones your body has less and less of as you age have been around for years, like the progesterone cream Dr. Lee recommends. They can't be patented, so drug companies don't push them like they do Premarin and Prempro. I personally also needed natural estrogen, like that in the Vivelle DOT patch and Estrace tablets, so you might want to do some reading beyond Dr. Lee. It's not "all in your head" and it affects your mind, body, and sex life, so get your hormones straight!
Rating: Summary: Excellent - and great for those with Osteoprosis Review: This book is so informative. It is wonderful in explaning the differences between natural and man-made hormones. If you have osteoporsis, this book is full of informatin to aid you to become involved with your doctor in setting a course of action against osteoporsis. It gives information on REVERSING osteoporsis. I strongly suggest reading another book, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Osterprosis". The book has much information about osteoporsis and what it means to your future. Both books are a must read for anyone who has osteoporsis or is headed in that direction. The Osteoporsis book is extremely informatative about all aspects of the disease, osteoporsis, while the Progestrone book gives information on REVERSING osteoporsis.
