Summary: The book delivers what the title says
Review: This book is a wonderful trainer for the non-runner or the first time marathoner. It gives you a training guidline for your body and your mind and the mind is half the game. I took a few more weeks of training than the book gives but finished my first maraton feeling great and I could not even run a mile when I started training!! This was a great tool and worth every penny.

Summary: If you really aren't a runner, this is THE book
Review: Although physically fit, neither my husband or could imagine running 5 miles, much less a marathon. This was the only book we bought--it made marathoning easy and fun for a NON-RUNNER. It has a very "inch by inch, it's a cinch" feel. Unlike many training regimes, this book takes a 4 days per week approach--I personally couldn't imagine finding the time to run more than 4 times per week.

We never ran for time, just to finish. We crossed the finish line in less than 4 1/2 hours and were looking forward to our next marathon.

I really cannot recommend this enough.

Summary: First-time marathoning is a life-altering experience!
Review: I still get goose bumps thinking about the day I found the last copy of this book on the bookstore shelf. There were so many marathon training books, but this title jumped out at me. A "non-runner" with a dream, that's me! There are hundreds of truisms in this trainer, none more important than your one and only goal should be to FINISH your first marathon. Don't wear a watch, just bring along a positive attitude and a belief in yourself. I have my marathon medal hanging in my office next to a picture of me grinning ear to ear. Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try. Go for it! Whitsett, Dolgener and co., take you there step by step. This is the only book you'll need.

Summary: Power of positive running
Review: I am attempting to "finish" a marathon. (...) I bought this book to begin my research into the possibility of making the marathon dream come true. The matter of fact, assured tone of voice through out the book has convinced me that it is possible.
The only thing better than reading this book would be to take the course. I've followed the "pre-training" plan and am here to tell you that if I can run 30 minutes without dying, then anyone can. It's practically impossible to imagine that running can be a mental activity. According to these authors, it is at least 90% so.
I'm using their information in a series of articles I'm writing for a health webzine as I begin my marathon quest.
Along the way, I've conducted extensive research and this book stands out among the rest. Run to the store and buy it.
The mental preparation, thinking positively and all that sounds like a bunch of bunk. But it works! I especially like to say, "IT doesn't matter," when things go wrong as they suggest. That has made a huge difference in my running and in my life. (...)

Summary: I went from non-runner to 4:49 marathoner.....
Review: I found this book to be very helpful, particuarly its advice on nutrition, running do's and don'ts, and use of visualization. The authors are not, by any means, over ambitious in their running program. I did not wind up following it because it did not seem like enough running to me; but now that I've run the marathon, it probably would have been enough for someone whose goal is to finish. On the whole, I recommend the book for someone, like me, who knows little about running and suddenly gets it in their head they want to run a marathon. By the way, I think I want to run another marathon.

Summary: YOU CAN AND WILL FINISH A MARATHON!
Review: If you want to complete a marathon, and especially if you are not a "runner", this book contains the program and the tools, physical and mental, that will get you across the finish line. Take it from me...I couldn't run a mile and a half on the treadmill without huffing and puffing back in January, and I just finished my first marathon on November 10th in Richmond Virginia.
THE REASON THIS BOOK WORKS IS ITS EMPHASIS ON THE MENTAL COMPONENTS OF TRAINING FOR AND RUNNING A MARATHON. YOU WILL BE A MENTAL POWERHOUSE BY THE TIME YOU ARE DONE WITH THE TRAINING.
If you want to run a marathon, ORDER THIS BOOK. Put yourself on the line, embrace life, and prepare yourself the most intense and exciting experience of your life.

Summary: Sensible and well informed guide that will get you there !
Review: I really enjoyed training with this book, and thoroughly enjoyed running my first marathon - and I think that that combination is very much what this book is all about.

I've had some training in coaching methods and this book includes all of the right straightforward advice and perspectives that you'll need to tackle this amazing challenge. There's advice on sports psychology, avoiding injuries, staying hydrated and well fed, and how to cope with 'the wall'. The training progression is very do-able and not as intimidating as other programs can be.

If you're a first timer and want a holding hand as you shape up and look forward to your most special marathon, then this book is almost as good as having a veteran coach !!

Summary: It really really does work!!
Review: I STARTED running (very sparsely) in March of 2001. In October 2001 I ran the Chicago Marathon and finished!! The book and training schedule really do work! Running in a marathon is an incredible experience ~ especially the Chicago Marathon! This book will help you achieve your goal so you can check one more item off your life's list of things to do.
