Summary: MAKING FANTASY
Review: Great book if you live your life on the runway, in a magazine, a photograph or movie. Anyone can take some of the world's most beautiful people and put make-up on them and say "How pretty!" I think more of the talent lies with the lighting technicians and those who hold the airbrush. It's not all bad, though. There is much to laud: the format of the book is great, with all of the step-by-step instructions, the large photographs and the fact that everything is SHOWN rather than TOLD (drawings versus text) which is where most how-to cosmetic books fail. Most of the transformations are amazing as well but how much of this depends solely on Aucoin's talent is debatable. Aucoin is definitely an artist, but this book seems far too politically motivated and self-indulgent ("look at all the pretty people I know!") I feel that he also holds back more than he lets on. His views change from magazine article to book(s)and back to magazine article more often than I care to admit ( "Apply sparingly and build up color" vs. "Put on as much as you like. You can always take it off"). My favorite is his claim that he prefers not to use foundation, when almost all of the make-overs obviously use foundation (and plenty of it!). This book is great as an art book, and some tips are helpful, but on the whole "Making Faces" is more like "Making Fantasy"; making beautiful people even more beautiful through the use of make-up, sets, perfect lighting, airbrushing and the advice of a dozen or so "assistants".

Summary: No one can come close
Review: Prior to it's publishing, all the other books on make-up application seemed a bit amatuer. I felt that I wasn't getting what I wanted, but didn't know exactly what that was-until now. Making Faces is a book dedicated to teaching the layperson to become an expert. This was the first time that I got inforamtion about beauty and make-up that didn't come in a magazine (which I end up disposing of). I recommend this book to all, regardless of skin color, age or any other stipulations that we place on using make-up. Kevyn not only makes this a great book by his extreme talent, but also in his words. His warm heart and open-minded views on beauty and life in general are integrated beautifully into the book. Without a doubt, the pinnacle of this genre.

Summary: This Book will Change your View of Makeup!
Review: Kevyn Aucoin is a magician! I had always worn makeup but I never realized the power my own hands had until I read all of the tips in this book. As a dancer, and actress, I am on the stage a lot, and this book helped me improve how I apply my makeup, and showed me many different looks that I didn't know my face could show. Now my friends and collegues are asking me to do their makeup before our shows. There are so many tips, eyeshadow, eyelashes, eyebrows, etc. The list goes on and on. It even shows you how to look like different movie legends. If you are serious about makeup, this is the perfect book for you!

Summary: Kevyn Aucoin is a genius!
Review: Making Faces is a work of art, the most helpful makeup book I've come upon yet, and is as well a fun read! I give this book to all my friends for their birthday and we just can't have too much fun experimenting with his methods, etc!

Summary: Tips and New Looks all in One!
Review: I have long admired Kevyn Aucoin for what he can do with celebrities. When I saw that he'd written a book, I bought it. It was wonderful! Not only does he give quite useful tips, but if you want a new look, he's only happier to help you! Night on the town? Go to "The Vamp". Want to look like Marilyn Monroe? Go to "The Bombshell". A dewy, babyish look? "The Innocent". You want to see the ultimate transformation? Check out the photo that looks like Katherine Hepburn- then look who it really is. Kevyn is a makeup genius- and it shows in this book!

Summary: We need more books like these
Review: I am glad to see that there are more smart makeup books out there nowadays. Books that appeal to the reader on many levels-- including her intelligence. Like "Lipstick" by Jessica Pallingston, "Beauty" by Bobbi Brown, and "Beauty over 40" by Dayle Haddon, Aucoin offers a mixture of fact, how-to, and information and alluring detail relating to how a woman's desire to remake herself visually goes further than skin deep, and how that in itself can be a fascinating subject for further scrutiny. Plus, the book itself is beautiful to look at!

Summary: Creative makeup
Review: as a profressional, I do think this is a great book for creative ideas. Not right if you want basic info on colors for skintones, though. Beautiful pictures.

Summary: an incredibly artistic book
Review: Making Faces is an excellent book. However, it might not be what you expect. This book is wonderful provided you are looking for something a little more outlandish, extravagant, or theatrical. It focuses on color, mood, and the art of makeup. Making Faces also has sections devoted to: shadowing,(the use of light and dark to make features appear slimmer or bolder) as well as a method to change eyebrow shape,(with the use of wax and heavy makeup) and other professional techniques. If you expect to find more than a display of Kevin's work, some rather interesting aproaches to beauty, and quite a few beautifully artistic photographs, this book may not be what you want. Yet, if you'd like a change or a different perspective in the world of makeup, go for it!

Summary: An Excellent Artistic Reference
Review: I bought this book to use as a reference - and it's proven to be a very good one. I am a Computer Animator and Artist by profession, and I use the information in the book when painting texture maps for characters.

The book is well laid out, and there are clear step-by-step instructions on how to acheive certain "looks." There isn't any in-depth discussion of color in the traditional sense, and I believe this is because Mr.Aucoin believes in experimentation - that there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to makeup (which makes sense). The book has a lot of "before and after" images (which can be almost frightening in the level of transformations accomplished by Mr.Aucoin - i.e. from "plain" to simply "stunning" - fellas, be sure to get that girl into a pool at some point...;). The book has a very personable feel to it, and it's obvious that Mr.Aucoin truly likes people and helping them feel good about themselves - and he is obviously *very* good at it.

The only thing I wish the book had that it doesn't would be some hi-res, evenly lit before-and-after portraits of the subjects (along with the dramatically lit ones). That would have easily made this a 5-star book to me.

All-in-all, an outstanding book.
