Rating: Summary: Unshackled by marketing - brush and blush happily! Review: Indispensable for anyone in theatre or beauty business - also useful for the general reader interested in seeking to expand their make-up skills. The great thing about this goal-oriented, generous book is the fact that Aucoin is not tied to any specific company. So it does not rip off the reader by recommending products that are currently in fashion or on department store stands. Instead, for his myriad styles, Aucoin will merely identify "light flesh-coloured lip pencil", or "liquid black eyeliner". Because he gives no brand names, it frees you be globally aware of the standbys and treats that you'll need to achieve the looks you want, whether on yourself or on others. Aucoin begins by analysing each individual facial feature. He explains the principles of applying foundation, blush, eyeliner, eyeshadow, lipliner, lipstick - even eyebrow pencil (telling you to make a "box" at the inside corner - hello, Ava Gardner!). Very clever, very helpful. Aucoin is brilliant in his analysis of brushes, and again, does not plug any particular line. But he does explain what different brushes do, enabling you to decide which you'll need. (Best is to go to a theatre make-up shop, where you'll get [usually] disinterested advice - not to mention cheaper brushes.) The illustrations and "types" of look are wonderful and really extend one's range and comprehension.
Rating: Summary: The greatest book!!! Review: This is a wonderful book. It tells you how to apply make-up and explains all of the make-up tools. He is wonderful at make-up and transfers this into his book. Because of his death his books and tips will be even more remembered and cherished. he shows you how to acomplish the innocent look and other such looks. He shows differnet techniques for doing make-up to make it look more stunning.
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: This book is my second favorite of Kevyn Aucoin's three books (The Art of Makeup and Face Forward are his two others). Making faces shows the different types of effects that can be created through the application of make-up. It has practical models as well as those perhaps more suitable for theatrical make-up artists (Madame Butterfly, etc.) I feel the book impresses upon one the power of make-up. I am an absolute beginner at this - actually his books were the first fashion books I've ever owned. I've never even read a fashion magazine, either, so I feel confident that any one can find his books helpful.
Rating: Summary: A must Have Review: Before I was pregnant I used to work in clubs as a dancer. I knew a few tricks about make up but nothing compared to the knowledge gained after reading this book. This book will show you have to wear it from natural to dramatic......how to change your look completely or just play up certain features. There are also many celebrity styles and makeovers which blew me away. Kevyn also gave this book a personal touch which made it all the more memorable. He is adored by the many celebs who have worked with him and it is easy to see why. His style and personality come shinig through on every page. He believed in the beauty of women....ALL women and this is what he helps you accentuate. I learned many techniques but the most important thing I learned was how to play up my beauty w/o hardly trying. Kevyn Aucoin passed this year and although I don't know him I do miss him. His book left that strong of an impression on me. I recommend this book for those who just want a few extra tips or for those who know nothing at all. I also purchased a copy for my husbands sister who is in those teen years where she was experimenting with makeup. It has helped her to polish her look and scored me points with my mother in law who would cringe every time she tried something different on her face.
Rating: Summary: Awesome book! Review: I've had this book for a couple years and I have to say, it's the one of the best makeup books I have. There are so many pictures and tricks that I haven't gotten through all his tips yet. I'm Chinese, so it's been difficult to find makeup ideas, but the ideas in this book are good for anybody! The section on different looks are incredible - I can have a look for any occasion. The only down side is that he doesn't list which companies make good products for his looks, but if you know makeup, or just copy down the description and bring it to a makeup counter, you'll find something that works! Anybody who wants to play with makeup or try a different look should get this book!
Rating: Summary: He's the best! Review: Kevyn Aucion is a true artist. He transforms people to the point where they look like a totally different person, in a good way! I wish I had his gift. He also gives step by step instructions on how to duplicate each look in real life. I love it!
Rating: Summary: I'm not a pro but I AM a make-up junkie and I say BUY IT!!! Review: I just bought this book 2 days ago and I already learned and used one of the techniques of applying eyeshadow. Not only that, but I got a compliment at work too! I like fun made up faces but I also want to be able to wear it to work. And this book is perfect. From fun tips for work to tips for a night on the town, this book is very worth every penny for those who like to play with make-up. =)
Rating: Summary: Pure Genius Review: This book was the best thing to ever happen to me. After wondering if makeup was the field I wanted as my career, Kevyn Aucoin has finally made that contemplation into a reality. I had another book by a popular makeup artist with wonderful tips but seemed very structured and unwilling to be daring. Kevyn, is the complete opposite. Besides the fact that this book is laid out wonderfully and very detailed, I believe that it could be the catalyst for future makeup artists, like myself. THANK YOU KEVYN!
Rating: Summary: excellent basics Review: This book is wonderful to learn the basics of make-up application. Although Aucoin seems to repeat looks, each one is beautiful. If you have never used cosmetics, this will teach you the essentials. If you are an experienced user, the book is full of little tricks of the trade. And when you do get the book it is fun to try and guess who he made over!
Rating: Summary: The Best Make-Up Book I've Ever Bought Review: Kevyn Aucoin's "Making Faces" is a make-up book that every celebrity should own. This book covers every possible question any novice or expert may want to know about. It has a nice array of colored photos with notable persons like Marylin Monroe, Cher, Kate Moss, Janet Jackson, Nicole Kidman and other famous models and actors/actresses. It has a section on foundation, powder, concealer that goes in depth to the styles you need to concentrate depending on your hair color or facial structure. For the eyes you will find all topics included from brows, shadowing, eye lining, and proper shading to eye lash care and tricks. There's a section on blush, shimmer, and dramatic effects for camera as well as fun colorful styles to create different looks. There's glamour in the soft style tones, dramatic style, defining style, and classical mentioned as well as sensual. You will go behind the scenes of famous people's dressing rooms to see how they create their Hollywood styles like the Innocent or the Vamp and the Sophisticate and Temptress or just the Exotique and the Siren. The model, showgirl, the player, the anarchist are just a few to mention from Kevyn's extraordinary compilation of famous celebrities and make-up techniques ever known. I highly recommend this book for any creative, fun loving person who enjoys the arts of the trade. It is no wonder it was the #1 New York Times Bestseller.
