Rating: Summary: Throughly entertaining *and* informative! Review: I have to say that this book is absoulutley wonderful! Kevin Aucoin is a genius! Wether or not you own his first book you'll enjoy this book and find it very useful. From the amazing before and after shots and glamour photography to the detailed step-by-step instructions it's a must have for anyone who's looking for makup help or a fashion photography adict (like me) either way.. this isn't something you can pass up.. run out and grab yourself a copy ASAP! P.S. to Reader from San Diego, California, the pictures he used in his book, while they *were* origionally part of fashion narritives for Allure etc. all the looks were created by Kevin himself and not just pilfered from a magazine for our entertainment.
Rating: Summary: an apology of estehics Review: Aucoin did it again!Any fashion-addict has dreamt about a new book of his to be offered to public enjoyment and that's why we, the worshippers of beauty in all its forms and shapes, have to celebrate this great moment in the history of the arts of make-up, photography and fashion. Thank you Kevyn to let us join the supernatural world of magic.
Rating: Summary: If you already have his Art of Makeup book--don't need this Review: Basically, a fair to good book full of valuable information about different makeup "looks." His techniques, which he shows how to do only moderately well, cover the range from "the gamine," "the glamour girl," "the innocent," all the way to...you guessed it..."normal, everyday" people. While this would be a helpful book for someone already armed with a little bit of makeup know-how, I don't think it would be especially enlightening for someone who isn't. Anyone who looks with a critical eye at fashion magazines can probably figure out what makeup he or she would need to create these looks. And basically, Aucion has taken most of the photographs in the books from photo shoots from magazines (I've seen a lot of the same pictures in _Allure_ magazine, etc.). Still, this is a good basic book if you're a makeup junkie, but not that much different from his "Art of Makeup" book. If you bought that one, you probably don't need this one. Although if you asked me which one I prefer, I would say "Making Faces."

Rating: Summary: SO COOL! Review: I absolutely adore this book. I have his other book, Face Forward and I love them. This man knows how to do the best makeup in the biz! I even copied a look in this book on a friend. In this book, there are before and after pictures of everyday people that really show how you can make a huge difference, with just some strategically placed cosmetics. This book is also good for anyone who would perform on a stage. Check it out, you won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: The best makeup book out there!!! Review: Kevyn Aucoin, THE makeup genius, shows a wide array of beauty tricks, tips, and photos to help the everyday woman interested in makeup (i.e.; me!) showcase her best features. The book and its photographs are beautiful.....such a joy to look through...........
Rating: Summary: GREAT BOOK; COULD BE A LITTLE BETTER Review: THIS BOOK IS GREAT! COVERS EVERYTHING ABOUT MAKEUP, EVEN HOW TO DO SHADING TO MAKE A NOSE LOOK SMALLER! THE ONLY THING I DID NOT LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK IS THAT THE AUTHOR DOES NOT SAY WHAT KIND OF MAKEUP HE IS USING ON THE MODEL. FOR INSTANCE I LIKED "THE BOMBSHELL" LOOK WHERE THE MAKEUP ARTIST MADE LISA MARIE PRESLEY LOOK LIKE MARILYN MONROE. I WAS THINKING, IF LISA MARIE PRESLEY CAN LOOK LIKE MARILYN MONROE, THEN SO CAN I. I HAD LONG BROWN HAIR LIKE RAQUEL WELCH IN HER YOUNGER YEARS & I CUT IT OFF & BLEACHED IT BLONDE, LIKE MARILYN. BAD IDEA. EVEN THOUGH I FOLLOWED "THE BOMBSHELL" LOOK DIRECTIONS, BLEACHED & CUT MY HAIR, I STILL DO NOT LOOK ANYTHING LIKE THAT PICTURE. I HAD NO CLUE WHAT COLOR MAKEUP TO BUY! I THINK IF YOUR INTERESTED IN COPYING ONE OF THE LOOKS IN THIS BOOK YOU SHOULD TAKE IT TO A PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP ARTIST, BECAUSE EVEN SOMEONE WHO HAS SOME SKILL WILL MOST LIKLEY NOT BE ABLE TO COPY THE LOOK THEY ARE GOING FOR.
Rating: Summary: Great Tips. Pictures not realastic Review: this book was good but the picture peoples makeup was makeup that you would not wear on an everyday basis. the pictures were good and he showed you how to do it but you wouldnt want to do it anyway becuase it was so bold and kind of scary. The part in the begining was very helpful he talkeed about what each brush did and where there used and what he recomended with the techniques and stuf so... yeah you decide
Rating: Summary: The "art" book of beauty Review: "Making Faces" is a step-by-step beauty manual featuring many different looks that have been tested out on real people and celebrities, from the simple to the outrageous. While it may be a very entertaining book to just flip through or a good experimental beauty book, I found that this book wouldn't be the best bet for those who are looking for the basics of beauty. There is a short chapter or so about the essential makeup products and such, but not a whole lot of beauty basics. However, that shouldn't stop your enjoyement of this well-written book. The large size and format of the book makes it easy to read and the pictures are really nice as well. Another good feature is that all of the looks (or "faces"), not only feature detailed step-by-step instructions, but they also have a clear drawing of the procedure right next to it, which would be a plus for people who need a visual aid. Overall, this is a great book, but if you want a book that will show you beauty basics, check out something else.
Rating: Summary: FOR DETAILS READ HERE Review: This book is well written and easy to understand. It offers lots of useful tips. This book is not geared toward the beginner who does not understand what concealer, foundation, and poweder are used for or how they are different. Instead the focus of this book is for the person who has already knows the everyday use of different products and would like to understand how they can better utilize them. Individuality is another emphasis that the author gives, which I felt is a good thing.
For the beginner I would recommend reading BEAUTY: THE NEW BASICS By Rona Berg. Then you can read this book and fully grasp what Kevyn telling you.
Some people do not like to buy products produced by homosexuals so I note here that Kevyn does tell the reader that he is gay. This is not meant to hurt Kevyn's sales, for I still highly recommend the book (well written and good information). He is a good writter and seems to have a very likable personality. But if you are one who does not purchase anything that has to do with homosexuals this book is not for you.
