Rating: Summary: Curly Girl is great! Review: My beautiful wife has luxurious and rich, curly hair. While in the bookstore recently, I saw this book, Curly Girl, and impulsively, I purchased it for her. However, my curiosity got the better of me and I am the one who read the book first. The more I read the more I realised that managing curly hair is one of life's persistent daily problems that can not be ignored or postponed. The author's daily ordeals with managing her hair and helping others with curly hair gave me a perspective on an ongoing chore in my wife's life that I had underrated. Before reading this book I didn't understand my wife's difficulties with managing her hair, the time and attention required for the daily task and the repercussions of ignoring the daily ritual. I got to understand how managing the hair was not merely daily grooming but an aspect of mental reflection. Humorous, informative, and easy to read, I highly recommend it especially to men whose wives and girlfriends have curly hair.
Rating: Summary: My curls, myself Review: I wish this had been around in the 1970s and early '80s, when I was the only one in my class who couldn't force her hair into a Farrah Fawcett feathered 'do. Or in the early '60s, when my mom was sleeping on orange juice can-sized rollers to get her curls to "flip." It's so liberating to read this book and its short bios of women with pride in their curls! And I can't wait to try out the hair-care techniques that the author recommends.
Rating: Summary: Finally, hair advise I can use Review: My hair is like having another child to take care of. It has always been soooo much work. There is very little to offer out there for support and advice. Most clippings in magazine's and so forth were tricks that I already knew or had nothing to do with my type of hair. I was so excited when I ran across an article, that quoted from this book. I said to myself, "What? Someone out there understands my hair and can help me?" I counted down the mintues until my lunch break and ran to the book store. I read the whole thing through that night and began using the advice from this book the very next day. Love it! I would like to thank Lorraine for writing this book. The next time I am in New York (if she is still there), I hope to find her shop, and make an appointment to have her do my hair and to personally thank her!

Rating: Summary: I finally get it! Review: This book is a must have for anyone with curly hair or taking care of a child with curly hair. The techniques go against everything you have ever been taught but they make SO much sense. It is absolutly wonderful!
Rating: Summary: The Curly Bible! Review: What I have been waiting for; a book to really help me manage and liberate my curly hair. The hairstylists I've been to seem to fight my desire to free up my curls--they want to perm it, straighten it, frost it, and this has only made things worse. Just one look into this fun book and I realize that the authors have gotten it right--all those approaches are wrong. And Massey has come up with some great tips and solutions--totally new ideas like getting rid of shampoo! Radical stuff but it makes sense when you read it. Also the philosophy (love your curls, your self) and the book's great stories and illustrations also grabbed me when I first picked it up. Can't wait to follow these suggestions and finally liberate my curly hair.
Rating: Summary: Finally, Something that works! Review: My hair has always been difficult. Not always curly, but more than wavy, and always tempermental. On a friends advice, I bought Lorraine Massey's CURLY GIRL book. Wow!!! I finally know how to deal with my hair. The book is down to earth and user friendly. The advice seems strange (using only conditioner to cleanse your hair, never brushing/combing...) but it made all the difference. My hair is finally able to figure out what it wants to do (it wants to curl in loose corkscrews and waves) and I get frequent compliments. I was skeptical of the conditioner only cleansing, but my hair feels clean, smells clean, and looks great. I would also like to mention that one thing I appreciate about the book is the lack of marketing for overpriced, multiple step hair care systems. She is not selling anything other than salvation for curly girls!
Rating: Summary: My dear curly sisters-- Review: Faboo book. Others have complained that the book had "too much" this or that, and I say there's no such thing. It contained everything I needed and more. Who can complain about that? (And in response to the reviewer who felt that some of the photos of curly-haired women and kids were unattractive, I say they're just people, looking happy, presumably feeling at peace with their hair. Finally. And more power to them. It's a narrow definition of beauty that doesn't include happiness and peace. I loved the pics, and thought the majority were attractive.) Last week I bought this book. Today I let my hair dry naturally, pinning up just the top curls to help them keep their shape while drying. No combing, just took out the clips when dry and gave a good shake, and I was off. I was in the rain. I was riding roller coasters. My hair loved it. Still curly, not frizzy. I have the same stories other reviewers have: the gradeschool Pixie cut, sadistic blowdryer-wielding stylists, years of pony-tails. Loving the cut at the salon and then vowing to sue the next day when my hair wouldn't behave. Now it's time to see just how long I can grow it, cuz now I "get it". Now I need a copy for my stylist. The author's product line is called Devacurl. There's an index of stylists on naturallycurly.com which may be helpful, too. Find your "Inner Curl"!
Rating: Summary: SOMEONE FINALLY UNDERSTANDS, THANK YOU Review: For years I have hated my curly, full of tangles hair. Brushing it was painfull, getting braids was torture (plus my hair would break off in clumps), relaxers destroyed my hair (making it brittle). I've been natural for 4 years and frustrated. Just as I was considering shaving it all off I came across this book. Had to get used to the "no shampoo" part. My hair has NEVER looked this good. I have confidence now that was not before, because I was ashamed of my hair. Have gotten so many compliments, and questions as to what I do to get my hair to look the way it does, even my mother(who has straight hair) likes it, even asks me "Can I touch it?" Now all I need is a stylist that cuts curly hair. Best book for curly hair, and fun to read many times over.
Rating: Summary: Mushy Hair Love Review: The review of product ingredients was great and led me to finding a shampoo that I am really happy with...not quite ready to throw 'em out like she recommends. However I was totally unprepared for the trauma-spin...in the 70's people would stop my mother on the street and ask her how she got my hair to look so beautiful. And I was only 8 when I got my first dry-cut. That said, it did take me another decade to stop brushing and till Lorraine to learn how not to have dryness be a constant struggle!!
