Rating: Summary: Get educated about your curly hair! Review: Before 'Curly Girl' I was always experimenting with my hair to find a method that would work for me. That involved brushing before washing my hair to get the knots out, combing, no combing, no brushing, no conditioner and the list goes on. The only thing that didn't dawn on me was 'no shampooing'! I wasn't after getting more curls, what I wanted was hair that wouldn't break so easily! After 2 weeks my hair is so much softer, curlier, supple and needs less work! My hair was like dry hay and the ends were breaking off daily, but that doesn't happen anymore. Massey taught me how to treat my hair gently and now I think my hair will be able to grow long, something i've wanted all my life without having to wait a lifetime.
Rating: Summary: Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey Review: The words 'no shampoo' is what first caught my attention. I had been looking for an alternative method of cleansing my hair and scalp for years. I'm a thyroid patient - shampoo make me itch all over and my doctor had me using a facial cleanser in it's place...that gets expensive. In curly girl...there's a whole system there that doesn't use chemicals. People may assume becuz it says no shampoo that it means dirty hair--this is not the case, it's just a different method of cleaning the hair. Just as I CAN'T use shampoo, my sweethart WON'T use shampoo...he says "what's wrong with using soap?" eww. Thanks to this book, I have a safe, natural, inexpensive way to care for my corkscrew curls. She did drop the ball on 1 part...page 62, 2nd paragraph - she asked some 'experts' on black hair to give advice...and this so called expert on natural hair care tells you to get a texturizer. I don't do chemicals...I crossed out that paragraph. If you follow this program for 2 months you will find that you dont need chemicals anyway.
Rating: Summary: A MUST HAVE! Review: As the curly-haired daughter of a stick-straight-haired mother, I grew up with the typical hair battles where my mother tried to brush all the curls out of my hair while I bawled because it hurt so much. In 6th grade, I had a pixie cut that my mother decided I should get that would have great on someone with straight hair but was horrible and flyaway on me. As I got older, I stumbled into some of the right ways to care for my hair, but I wore it up in a ponytail for three straight years in college because I didn't know what to do with the curls. This book actually made me CRY because it was like, "Other people understand my hair problems!" There's been a visible difference in the health of my hair since I started following her system, and it's no longer a wrestling match to get my hair to do something attractive. The best part of the book for me was the styles for special days in the back - what a relief not to always have the same hair for every event because I can't do traditional up-dos! I recommend this to every curly girl I know, even ones I sometimes meet on the street.
Rating: Summary: It really works! Review: I used to use 3 different de-frizz products plus mousse in order to get my naturally curly hair to curl in a socially acceptable way. And always it was the roll of the dice as to whether it would work or not. I was really, really skeptical about the "no-shampoo" thing, but I tried it (You gotta give it just one chance!) and ohmigosh! My hair now curls beautifully. No, it isn't oily or greasy. I use only ONE product on it now (gel) (plus conditioner of course), and my stylist (who has never heard of the author), says my hair is in much better shape than ever - barely any split ends. When I told my stylist that I'd stopped using shampoo, he said "I wish more people would do that!". Read the book. Give it a try. It if doesn't work for your hair, or you don't like the look. Fine. But if you truly are a curly girl, I think you will find that your hair is healthier than ever and easier to care for, too.
Rating: Summary: Worth every penny Review: This is an amazing book--full of good ideas. I've always either fought my curls, been unhappy with my hair or ended up with breakage and dullness. I had serious doubts about the "no shampoo" rule but it really works. My hair doesn't look, smell or feel dirty. In fact,my husband can't seem to stop touching it. I especially enjoyed Lorraine's treatment of the political and historical role of curly hair. I disagree with the reviewer who thought the hair of the women pictured was unattractive. I thought they looked great.
Rating: Summary: I've died and gone to heaven Review: Lorraine has been cutting my hair for four and half years...and I was always the one who got my haircut and then asked someone to blow it straight...LORRAINE'S BIGGEST NIGHTMARE. And what's witht this NO SHAMPOO...I thought they were some dirty hair cult trying to convert me...Then finally, after four years or begging and pleading, I gave in and let them teach me how to be curly... and I NEVER LOOKED BACK. To say I'm a NEW woman is an understatement. LORRAINE MASSEY is a GENIUS!!! Without exaggeration, I get a compliment EVERY DAY about my hair...I never got one before. This book is every curly girls dream come true. So don't walk to the book store...RUN...you can thank Lorraine later...and I guarantee you will!!!
Rating: Summary: And now for some criticism Review: She doesn't want you to use shampoo!!! Um, that ain't gonna happen! And have you seen the photos of some of the people in that book. If that is what my hair will look like after following her advice, no thanks. I'm a curly girl. I embrace my curly hair. I use shampoo (don't tell Massey, but sometimes I wash my hair twice in one day--shocking) and conditioner. My secret to good curly hair: a great stylist, good product and humidity. Apparently the author knows hair, but if you were to look at the photos of people who give testimonials about being a "curly girl" you'd wonder what they were thinking. I said to myself, "did you realize you were being photographed for publication? because the pictures aren't really the most flattering." The photos certainly gave me pause. If I follow her method, will I look like that? No thanks. I want to look good. There are some very witty moments in this book, the 12 steps to becoming a curly girl were funny.
Rating: Summary: Amazing but true... Review: I used to think it was my fault my hair was such a mess. It was unmanageable, always a huge ball of fuzz and mess. Living in Indiana where the summers are hot and humid and the winters cold and dry - it seemed there was never a good time of year for my hair. After reading this book and really beginning to understand my hair and how to take care of it, EVERY day is a great day for my hair. It may seem silly to some (especially straight-haired women) but there are really traumatic psychological impacts on the self-esteem because it always seemed like everyone else was happy with their hair and knew what to do with it. Finally, I don't feel ashamed anymore. This book doesn't solve all the problems, but it sure takes away some of the more useless ones - our hair should be the LEAST of our worries! I agree that there are too many confessions - less is more - and some of them broke up the flow of the main text and got irritating. A few more styles and cutting tips would have been an added bonus. But in no way does this detract from the 5-star rating. Every salon in the world should have this book. Every curly-haired woman should have this book. Every boyfriend, husband, father, brother, and friend of a curly girl should also read this book. It's a wonderful insight into what we've gone through in our lives by trying to deny the "Inner Curl." My name is Victoria, and I'm a Curly Girl. Thank you, Lorraine Massey!!!

Rating: Summary: Finally an answer to my curly hair prayers! Review: I have naturally curly blond hair and have had the "crunchy" look for a few years. I love my curls but I never had hair that you want to touch. My loving husband read about this book on an airline and told me to buy it. After a little hesitation to using the authors methods, I now am a firm believer and have beautiful curly hair! My 4 year old has Shirly Temple type curls and I now use this book's methods on her hair and it is AMAZING! I recommend this book to anyone with wavy or curly hair! It is life changing!
