Summary: Teacher from New Jersey
Review: This book is one of the best autism resources on the market! The social and communication targets and activities listed in the book provide a wonderful source of ideas for parents and professionals. As a speech-language pathologist, I found the assessment section to be the most helpful. The checklists provided have really given me direction as to the next steps to take with children. The text is also comprehensive, providing information ranging from joint attention and AAC to topics such as emotions and higher level pragmatic skills. I just can't say enough!

Summary: Teacher from New Jersey
Review: This is a must read for all educators, speech pathologists and parents who are interested in helping children with autism learn complex social and communication skills. Dr. Quill's first book was wonderful; this book is even better. It is an easy-to-read book that gives hundreds of practical ideas for working on complex social skills and communication skills. There is a comprehensive assessment tool that targets key areas such as imitation, solitary and social play, communication, conversation and social-emotional skills. The recommended intervention strategies draw from the best of behavioral and developmental research on autism. This book is tops on my recommended book list!!!

Summary: A very useful resource
Review: Working on a volunttary basis with Autistic teenagers has brought me into contact with a world of research literature, instructional manuals and 'snake oil', that I never before contemplated. Quill's book stands out as remarkably well researched, with solid scientifically grounded practices referenced frequently. Quill is very careful to document the steps in the pedagogical process and the outcomes that are possible as a result. The purposes and methodology behind each lesson are very precisely explained. Parents and therapists reading this book are left with no illusions of the difficulties facing them in effecting even small progress. I have read at least half a dozen texts (including several of the most recently published) dealing with the same themes, and in mu opinion Quill's text is head and shoulders above the others in terms of the science, the pedagogy and the psychology. If you fancy starting an Autism library - then look at Quill's text. It will save you time, money and disappointment. A tremendous contribution, in my opinion.
