Rating: 4 stars
Summary: A masterful union of Makeup and Photography
Review: First, what I didn't like about the book (hence the four stars): Aucoin's starry-eyed homages to his celebrity 'friends' are sometimes a little grating - celebrities,or our friends for that matter, as we all know, are not the wonderful, flawless individuals that Aucoin often describes them to be in this book. I find myself sometimes skipping over much of the print. The writing, however, is not what makes this book special, so onto the good stuff: Face Forward aptly lives up to its title - it emphasizes makeup as a progressive device which helps to advance inner confidence, beauty and individuality in the world we live in. Furthermore, the creative and visually stunning photos are what make Face Forward enjoyable for even those not interested in makeup. Aucoin doesn't fail to neglect the more practical aspects of makeup either - he describes in good detail the application techniques he uses on each model, although he doesn't name any particular brand of cosmetics,(his vague descriptions of colors to use, "reddish brown" for example, won't always be of much help to beginners in make-up artistry either, I'm afraid). However, his fantasy and historical recreations on celebrities like Julianne Moore,Gwyneth Paltrow and Tina Turner are just awe-inspiring - this is the stuff that elevates makeup into a true art form! But while veering into the realm of fantasy, Aucoin always remain clearly focused, describing most of the makeup techniques in a way that anyone can understand. His ample use of multi-ethnic, multi-aged and bi-gender models also reflects a truly modern, realistic and 'forward' approach to beauty. Use the book for what it is - it's not the most practical, how-to book for everyday use, but it does pay great tribute to the fantasy element of makeup and to the beauty in all of us. All in all, a great book from the master which the novice and professional alike will surely appreciate, and the perfect companion to Aucoin's 'Making Faces'. Get both if you can!

Summary: Ignore the bitter reviewers who wish they were KEVYN!
Review: This book is absolutely brilliant, easy to understand, and definatelty not for angry, bitter people who would'nt know beauty if it hit them in the face. Kevyn is our hero because he knows beauty exist in all colors (that probably irks alot of people) sizes, ages(the book has women from 7 to 77) and even a couple of sexy hunky guys! Full of Make_up tips and tricks, this book is for everyone!

Summary: A must have for any Beauty Consultant
Review: I've had this since the first week it came out. Now that I've started my own business as a beauty consultant, this book has become essential to my business. I'm always getting compliments on how beautiful my face looks. Thanks, Kevyn. You are truly a master.

Summary: Glossy and flashy photography, not much else!
Review: This was such a dissapointing book full of flashy photos and Kevyn's sometimes silly anecdotes. Yes, there are instructions for creating all of the looks - but is this realistic? Really come now, are any of us going to try to make ourselves over into Joan of Arc, Cleopatra, James Dean, Clark Gable??????? This is just another vehicle for the author to showcase his magic on the human face (he is an extremely talented artist in his field) however, he is not giving us anything new since his last book and frankly, some of the contents of this book are rather bizaar. If you like to look at beautiful photos of models and celebs buy a magazine, study the makeup and try it out. It's alot cheaper than this book.

Summary: The magic of makeup
Review: Kevyn Aucoin is a fantastic makeup artist. A true artist who understands the canvas of the female face. I am a professional photographer and most of the time I also do the makeup on my models. Kevyn's book has opened up so many more ideas for me on how I can create a mood with how I apply the makeup to models. I highly recommend this book. I also have his other book Making Faces ( this book is just as fantastic)

Summary: Great for Coffee Table
Review: I bought this book because I love Kevin Aucoin and I think that he is an extremely talented make up artist. I keep it on my coffee table but I also look through it for tips for myself. What I have found is that my guest can not help themselves from picking up the book and asking questions about the models. It's like a game, 'Guess who the model really is'. It is striking to them when they find out that Veronica Lake is actually Martha Stewart or that Linda Evangelista is actually a well coiffed man. If you have an open mind and you love make up, pick this one up.

Summary: This book is unbelievable, but spare me with the politics...
Review: I absolutely love Kevyn Aucoin. He is not only very talented and extremely creative, but he also seems to genuinely love and respect women. I think he was one of the people responsible for Courtney Love's transformation a few years back. You will not believe how much he makes celebrities look like other people, it is mind-blowing. (If any of you know who the hilarious Amy Sedaris is and have seen her on "Strangers with Candy," you MUST look at this book!) This book is very inspiring, even to "every day" people.

HOWEVER...

Spare me the political stuff. I really felt offended by some of the things he says. At one point he refers to 50s family values being questionable. I wish he had either explained himself a little or omitted it. Not all of the women reading his book are single, fabulous 20-somethings living in NYC or LA. Some of us are stay-at-home mothers, housewives, etc., and I for one felt a little, I guess, excluded. It just ruined the book for me in a way (hence the 4 stars). There are some hypocritical statements in the book, if you ask me. Not sure why he feels he needs to include them. I'll still look at it again, but I'll mostly avoid the print, and I probably won't buy it for the aforementioned reasons(although I do have his last book).

Summary: Gorgeous!
Review: Gorgeous! Kevyn Aucoin's work really shines in this one. The photos are gorgeous, the models are gorgeous, everything is just gorgeous. The book makes a great reference for anybody wanting to try various new looks and it's a great addition to any home library. 5 stars all the way!

Summary: Absolutely Fabulous
Review: This book totally changed my life. Because of facial scars I have to wear makeup everyday and it always looked like I had on makeup. Kevyn's book teaches you how to use makeup so your face has a natural glow, and it also gives tips for outrageous looks when you're feeling in a party mood. The greatest aspect of this book is that he includes women of all shapes and colors. He even shows how men can use makeup without feeling "less masculine".

Summary: Kevyn Aucoin is a Talented Artist
Review: I purchased this book, and what Kevyn can do is so artistic! He has a tremendous talent of bringing out the best qualities on a person and then turn them into other celebraties. My favorite was Cher [the actual one], her makeover was amazing with the jewels around her eyes. I definately would recommend this book.
