Rating: Summary: Superb, just like his others! Review: Kevyn Aucoin is more than a makeup artist, he's a magician. A true artiste, he takes both everyday people and celebrities we're all accustomed to seeing, and turns them into someone completely different. The pictures are amazing, and the step by step instructions are simple and clear. The one thing the book doesn't provide are specific names and colors of the makeup that is used, so it can be hard to emulate the looks. However, despite that, it's still amazing to look through!
Rating: Summary: Kevin's book is a true reflection Review: of racial/ethnic/ideological diversity of world's women. His very cover used two women from different racial/ethnic groups to show the world that beauty is more than just the usual Nordic blond haired, blue eyed women that mainstream media is so fond of. Mr. Aucoin does not stereotype women of color as either "exotic," "ethnic," or "global," as mainstream publications and photographers do today. It's all about the inviduality of today's women. So, Mr. Aucoin, please keep up the good work!
Rating: Summary: Kevyn's the best! Review: Kevyn Aucoin's books never disappoint. I always pick up a couple of little tricks here and there that I incorporate into my beauty routine. If I want to try a new look I try to read through the parts I am most interested in. Of course everyone loves to look at the transformations that women AND men can go through just by using makeup. I know I show this book to lots of people and they are always completely amazed at all the before and after shots!

Rating: Summary: Beautiful and fun book, but not as useful as "Making Faces" Review: Aucoin produces yet another beautiful and fun book about the art of make up. However, Face Forward is much like Making Faces without the practical techniques. The book follows the same format as Making Faces without many improvements. The book begins with general articles about brows, lips, eyes, color, etc. However, these articles are truly general and only give written directions to achieve the looks in the photos. If you have the facial structures of the models, then these sections will be very useful to you! For the rest of us, I found the preliminary sections to be fun but not helpful. The next section entitled "Face to Face" is useful with many before and after photos. The techniques are written and illustrated by photos of the make-over subject throughout the process. The looks are very natural and complimentary to the different ethnicities featured. I wish there were more makeovers in this section! The final section entitled "Dimensions" features 48 different looks that are fun but not realistic for everyday use. In fact, most of the techniques demonstrated would only be useful for Halloween or a costume party. This section features many stars from Madonna to Tina Turner but offers little substantive content for everyday use. Being a make-up-a-holic, I found Making Faces the better buy of the two. If you have to choose, choose Aucoin's first book for practical use. For fun, this book definitely takes the cake.
Rating: Summary: My first make-up book... Review: Back several years ago I wanted to get the "Making Faces" book when it first came out but missed out. This time around I made sure that I got it. From what I could remember, this book was similar to its predecessor, but an updated version. It was good in showing visual step-by-steps, as well as before and after photos. The models ranged from pre-teen to older women, men, Asian-Americans, Caucasians, and African-American - and they didn't ALL have perfect skin either! The only things I would have wished for were complete step-by-steps and some more "everyday" model makeovers, with skin problems ranging from unevenness to blotchiness, and from mild acne to severe acne-prone skin. It would truly have been an impressive feat to see that! Of course, I really looked forward to the section where he turned people into other celebrities, very impressive work indeed. I suppose this was more of a glamour-type of book rather than an amateur's makeup how-to book, but if you have any bit of experience, even if it's just about once a month (which is the case for me), it's really easy to catch on and eventually you'll be able to emulate the images like the ones in this book.
Rating: Summary: versus bobbi brown Review: This book complements very well the beauty book by bobbi brown. Hers talks about philosophy, how to create "daily" face using one's asset in the best possible way. It is very gender sensitive, race sensitive. Kevyn Aucoin book is how to create an impeccable beautiful face. He and his models were kind and courageous enough to give us before and after pictures; to see what a make-up can do (and it really does change the faces), and how much our self-esteem is undermined by those created faces in the fashion magazine. Most faces on those magazines are artistic creations and we don't need to feel disappointed by our naked faces; anyone can put great make-up as Kevyn shows. I would recommend that everyone reads those two books, this one (and also other two books by him) and the book by bobbi.
Rating: Summary: Put your best face forward Review: Kevyn Aucoin is a brilliant artist, sheer brilliance! His before and after pictures of his models show all the difference of night and day, and although he doesn't give you step by step instructions- it certainly is not a difficult task to figure out from the large pictures included. The book is excuisitly presented, in beautiful hardback and the photographs of the models are well done aswell. I particularly admired Kevyn for using not only celebrities (certainly no shortage either!) but also friends and family of his own, celebrities and other friends. The book probably showcases 70+ DIFFERENT people! Definitly worth the cost- everyone should own this fabulous book. Hats off to Kevyn Aucoin!
Rating: Summary: The Must Have / Must See Make-Up Book Review: Kevyn Aucoin's artistic abilities are nothing short of amazing and he proves it again in this book, Face Forward. He tranforms friends and celebrities into masterpieces. Even if you are not into make-up, this book will amaze you.
