Rating: Summary: Best of Aucoin's books. Review: In preparation for doing my own makeup on my wedding day, I sought out various resources, which led me to Kevyn Aucoin's books. While not a self-help manual per se, this book shows the amazing transformations that can come as a result of makeup alone. I found it very useful for providing an overview of different techniques--for example, the effects of combining light/dark mouth with light/dark eyes; the use of neutral versus more dramatic colors; options for shaping brows, eyes, and lips; etc. While most of us will never come anywhere near Kevyn's skill level, this book provides at least a starting point for incorporating some professional tips into your own makeup routine.
Rating: Summary: 5 stars all the way! Review: I guarante you will look at this book more than once. I must admit it's more celebrity oritented than "Making Faces" and the directions for applications don't come with as many sketches , but the fabulous photography and the different looks are worth a 5 star rating.
Rating: Summary: LOVED IT! Review: I absolutely loved this book. I would recommend it to all people interested in the Make-up industry. Kevyn Aucoin was extremely talented. It was rewarding to see celebrities having different looks while comparing what they usually look like with it. He also explains how to get that "look"
Rating: Summary: Favorite of Aucoin's books Review: This is my favorite of Kevyn Aucoin's three books (The Art of Makeup and Making Faces are his two others). Face Forward has simple practical suggests as to the application of make-up. It goes step-by-step, start with the moisturizer, then so on.It shows many different styles and has beautiful models (including Julia Roberts-my favorite). It is motivating, simple and works. Has models of every skin and hair tone imaginable. I am an absolute beginner at this - actually his books were the first fashion books I've ever owned. I've never even read a fashion magazine, either, so I feel confident that any one can find his books helpful.
Rating: Summary: Tragic lose of talent and intelligence Review: When Kevin Aucoin died earlier this year it was a loss of not only a great talent but a good human being. This book is delightful and is very instructive on how to make your face transform withe either small effort or more in depth work. I have no problem using the photos and instructions given in this to achieve what I desire. This book and "Making Faces" have changed my whole outlook on make-up and how I use it to my great joy! You should read the entire front section and it may help to have "Making Faces" as well to understand all that he shows you in this book. But it is mostly intuative once you get going! Hurrah for Kevin and my deepest sorrow that he was taken from this earth much too soon.
Rating: Summary: Excelent Review: It is a great book. Includes photographs of today actresses like Gwyneth Paltrow as James Dean, yes!! James Dean, Julia Roberts as Julie Christie in Dr. Zhivago. And it explains the techniques to achieve those results. I bought the book because I liked the photographs, I am not interested in make up, but my wife checked it and told me it is a super book with usefull information on the subject.
Rating: Summary: Down-to-earth, easy to understand and very ve professional!! Review: I bought this as my very first book about make-up. I already new the basic techiniques as I am slowly trying to master this art. I found "FaceForward" to be very interesting and I definitely learnt many new things. Kevyn Aucoin was definitely a forerunner of make-up and he was one of many who made this an art. I am sure that this book will continue to be of help to me even in my future studies.
Rating: Summary: not descript enough to be helpful Review: I wanted to do my make-up like famous african american women, but although Kevin SHOWS in pictures how to thin down the nose, lighten out the skin tone, and other artful concealments, he never mentions these steps in the written descriptions. All the descriptions seem to generally be the same steps, page after page. He is phenomenal in his transformations, but does a poor job explaining EXACTLY how to do them ourselves. The pictures are beautiful, though.
Rating: Summary: Great for beginners and pro's Review: As a proffesional make-up-artist I have to give all the three of Kevyn Aucoins books I have, five stars: Face Forward, The art of Make-up and Making Faces. All books are similar in the way they describe how to apply a straight beauty-make-up, but different enough so that each book brings something new. Aucoin is a make-up-genious and it is truly amazing to see the changes he makes to famous and not-so-famous faces. Each photo has a good explanation to how the make-up is applied and why. This gives great help to a beginner...sort of a fill in the blanks approach to make-up.... and to a proffesional the book is filles with tips, ideas and just tons and tons of inspiration. These books are just about must-haves when it comes to make-up. I can recommend them all highly.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: Kevyn Aucoin is amazing! The transformations in this book are awesome. Martha Stewart into Veronica Lake. A man into Linda Evangelista. Gwyneth Paltrow into James Dean. I like this book even better than Making Faces. Kevyn Aucoin turns makeup into magic, and he does it brilliantly. It's also very educational to someone who's studying beauty, as has individual sections dedicated to different effects, different parts of the face, different tools, etc. This book is very entertaining, and also very helpful. I love it!
