Rating: Summary: Way too heavy handed, the author comes across as know-it-all Review: While the author, Gwen Shamblin, does offer different and in some ways compelling views on eating annd dieting, her book reads like a series of opinions. She mentions her degrees in nutrition, but usually her ideas seem to come out of a sense of "I know better than you" than anything that could remotely pass as fact. There is a definite bias in the book against anything that remotely smacks of a 12 step program, or anything that would suggest a victim mentality. While this is a refreshing outlook for a self-help book, the way she addresses it comes across very heavy handed and a little self-righteous. At various points throughout the text she uses scripture to back her arguments. In this she also shows a bias, either omitting scriptures that would clearly argue against what she is putting forth as the truth, or that would just shed light on the fact that there might be another side to the arguments she brings forth. When I began reading this book, I had a lot of hope that this would be a useful tool in the area of Christian counseling, but due to some of the blatant inaccuracies and lack of grace the author exhibits, this book seems best left on the shelf.
Rating: Summary: The Truth Will Set You Free Review: I am a "thinking person", an intellectual that spent so much time complicating things with all of my thinking, that by the time I realized I could not, in my own power, find self discipline, I was more than a hundred pounds overweight. Over the last 11 months I have lost 80 pounds by following the simple truths found in Gwens Book "The Weigh Down Diet". It teaches you to find self discipline not in the power of your own thinking but in the power of Jesus. There is no attempt to "sell" you anything in this book. Gwen makes no bones about the fact that it is through the power of God we find the strength and the will to see us through the process of permanent weight loss. If you are looking for an easy way to permanent weight loss then don't bother with this book. However, if you are looking for a simple, uncomplicated approach that will bring freedom to your life, then I highly recommend "The Weigh Down Diet".
Rating: Summary: The truth ! Review: I just finished reading "The Weigh Down Diet", and boy it is so good to read the Truth!! Gwen has written down what I could only feel in my heart, but not quite put it all together! Everything she says makes so much sense. It is the truth! This book has been so inspiring to me. I would suggest that this be your first and last stop for over-eating problems. If you are ready to face the Truth, pick up this book, and enjoy!

Rating: Summary: God solves weight loss problems with a commonsense approach! Review: You want to know how to lose weight permanently? Eat only when hungry and only to full! Gwen Shamblin's book is so to the point and right on target that it is profound. Most of weight loss programs have you eating everything from alfalfa sprouts yum! to 101 appetizing ways to prepare tofu. No wonder we overeat. The biblical principals in this book for weight loss are easy to follow and sound. You need to have discipline and stop becoming a slave to the pull of the refrigerator. Most importantly, you put your trust in the one true God of the universe. I recommend this book to anyone not only because I'm a Christian, but because it works! This diet is for thinking people.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding and Lasting Approach to Weight Loss Review: I too am a participant in the Weigh Down program, and contrary to at least one of the reviews listed, AM a "thinking person." Weigh Down is about understanding who we are created to be, and learning to be obedient to God in the way that we eat. Yes, it is about self-discipline, but in a different way than is traditionally meant, because it is about being obedient to the God of the universe and worshipping Him instead of food. I have lost weight, feel better about myself than I have in years, and have learned that God is always faithful. This book is not for those who refuse to acknowledge God as creator and Lord, but it doesn't change the fact that He is creator and Lord. The most amazing thing I've experienced is that the weight loss is just a side benefit -- the real benefit of Weigh Down is the fact that my relationship with Jesus Christ has grown and matured
Rating: Summary: A very winning solution to the losing battle!! Review: I have not only read the book, I've participated in the program for 2 1/2 years. I do agree that this book may not appeal to everyone as I feel that you have to be ready and willing to accept the fact that you can lose weight PERMANENTLY and eat the foods you love. The "tiny portions" as described by an earlier review are the amounts that fill us up. We eat what we want when we are STOMACH hungry and STOP when we are FULL!! In this book, Gwen Shamblin pours her heart and soul into making the point that we cannot walk this walk alone!! Anything is possible with GOD'S help!! Also, Gwen is one of the most humble caring people you could ever hope to meet! She knows that God placed her in the "position" she is in and has allowed her to be used as His vessel. When we realize that the basic four food groups were not mentioned in the Bible, but is a man-made rule as are scales, then we can start to change our mind set from the old man-made dieting rules. I've been in Weigh Down since February 1995 and have lost 67 lbs and over 40 inches total. I've kept the weight off for about 20 months now. I can eat anything (chocolate, cheese, mayonnaise, ANYTHING!!) and not have to worry about it! The book and the program are HIGHLY recommended
Rating: Summary: A Deep Solution to a Wider Problem Review: Ms. Shamblin's food research has turned
up a real answer to an age-old question. Not too amazingly, God has quite an opinion on this topic. Those who desire to live "by the Book" (and to be free of excess poundage once and for
all) will find great hope and much help in her textbook. A "thinking person" cannot miss the depth and clarity of God's heart in this matter. The reality of her findings closely
mirror most Biblical teachings--too simple of an approach to be taken seriously by the proud. After managing fitness centers for years, watching people struggle with weight problems, and battling with it myself, I cannot express how grateful I
am to Ms. Shamblin for taking the time to search
out every passage in the Bible that deals with food, eating, and God's wonderful plan for making it work in the real world. What a refreshing
and sound approach to keeping weight in check in a society where being "on a diet" FOREVER is both depressing and unrealistic. Super book!
Rating: Summary: Beware, not for everyone. Review: Beware, Ms Shamblin is more interested in converting you to her brand of Christianity than helping you lose weight and develop a healthy lifestyle. She quotes scripture out of context to "prove" her opinions. She is a master salesman. The first chapters of the book tell you that you can lose weight without dieting and without self discipline. You can eat anything you want. After you are hooked, she then tells you the facts. Sure you can eat anything you want, just in tiny portions. To control your appetite you must give your life completely over to God. In effect, you have to develop self discipline, you just call it something else. The book has several testimonials which seem to indicate that this plan may work for some people, but it is much too simplistic for a thinking person....
Rating: Summary: The Weigh Down Diet is Great!!! Review: This book is great!!! I no longe have the desire to consume 3000+ calories per day. As a matter of fact, I can consume under 1000 calories per day and not be hungry. I am losing weight, and I have The Weigh Down Diet and God Himself to thank
