Summary: A matter of self-control
Review: Of the countless insights I've gained by reading "Weigh Down Diet," the main concept has been "How do I control my desire to indulge in food?" As humans, we have an innate desire to save the best for ourselves, to indulge in things that feel good, and to justify our actions. According to the Bible, however, our purpose is to glorify God. He instructs us to obey His commands, and to "give up" our personal rights. He wants us to give Him control, instead of seeking to be the "boss."

"Weigh Down Diet" opened my eyes to these truths. It explains that God is a loving, caring Father who desires the best for you. If you will give up your food, your desire to lose weight, and especially your desire to CONTROL what you eat or do, He will bless you, and will give you the desires of your heart.

I highly recommend this book--not necissarily as a way to lose weight (though that's one of the blessings!), but especially as a way of becoming aware of God's special concern and love for YOU.

Summary: Fill your hungry soul with a quest for God!
Review: Gwen Shamblin's book shows how you can fill your hungry soul with a quest for God. He alone can satisfy the longings of our heart! The basic principles for eating are as simple as you can imagine: Do not eat until you are truly hungry. As soon as you feel politely full and satisfied, stop eating. Then do not eat again until you are hungry. Following these principles you may eat whatever you like!!! That means anything from a rich dessert to a salad, to bread, to meat, ANYTHING that you are craving as long as you follow the guidelines for hunger and fullness as stated above. The thing that most people notice is that the draw to food is very, very strong. The temptation is to eat before your body lets you know that you are hungry, or to eat beyond fullness. People (myself included) often find that we have been relying on food to comfort us and not just to eat as "our daily bread". This is where we learn to run to our Father God for comfort. Gwen points us to follow obedience to God to find true freedom. Many, many people I know see the weight loss as a mere side benefit. For once they find what their hungry souls are searching for: A loving God who cares for them deeply and longs to satisfy them with every good thing.

Personally, I have tried many weight loss programs in my life, but for once I have found one that truly makes sense and follows Biblical principles.

Summary: More than weight loss, give it all to the Lord.
Review: This book was not only about weight loss but about turning everything over to the Lord. You cannot begin to imagine how hard it has been for me to diet after my 2nd child. I'm not vastly over weight, but just did not have the desire to go on the "Zone Diet" or any of those other diets out there. This diet made perfect sense - give it to the Lord - he honors us when we pray. I have grown so much closer to the Lord as a result of this book - I've lost some weight too! It's all about exchanging your life for the Lord.

Summary: Could be good for spiritual growth, bad for physical health!
Review: I have mixed feelings about Gwen Shamblin and her book. Most of the "facts" are unreferenced. Most of the Biblical verses quoted are out of context and are manipulated to serve the author's point of view. To say that God is the master chef behind all those fatty foods that clog your arteries is blasphemous! Shamblin seems to have good intention, but that doesn't justify the means! This is nothing but a starvation diet in disguise. A friend of mine, who is 5' 8" tall, is now eating barely 800 calories a day (her BMI is 1700) on this WD diet. Most of those calories come from twinkies and candy bars! Why would you choose to eat those junk foods when the hands of the Creator have graciously provided wholesome grains and vegetables that satisfy your nutritional needs and keep you from being sick? Don't focus on losing weight. Focus on improving your overall health. Don't try to lose weight while running garbage through your system. C'mon, my fellow Christians, study God's word and figure out for yourselves if this program is biblically sound. Just because a book has the word God in every sentence doesn't mean it comes from the heart of the Father! There are many other ways to establish a solid relationship with God and achieve optimum health. If this program helps you achieve both, that's fine! But don't think this is THE only way.

Summary: They Wouldn't Let Me Give it Zero Stars...
Review: I'm not a fan of hero worship. I think too much of that exists in our society. The same way dieters loved Susan Powter for her solution to weight loss, is the same way people love Gwen Shamblin in this book, "Weigh Down Diet" I don't like rules or being told what to do by somebody that has never really had a weight problem. She's very opinionated, and heavy handed, and I wouldn't recommend her to anybody.

Summary: No others gods??!! Could food be your god? What about....
Review: I found this book to cut deep to the heart! Not only could food be your god, but anything that you desire more than our Lord. Mrs. Shamblin illustrates masterfully how we have been "sold" on the world's ideas. She points the readers back to the Word and what God says is true. This book is not just for dieters, but for all those seeking a closer walk with God.

Summary: Praise God and Gwen for this wonderful weight loss workshop
Review: This is the only thing I've ever found that works! I love that it's a christian-based weight loss program. I have only been on this for a few weeks and already have lots more energy, don't feel nauseated on a regular basis, have less gastrointestinal problems, my low blood sugars are under better control, and I have lost 7 lb and 6 inches. I feel such peace inside me thanks to God! If you would like a Weigh Down buddy, please email me or find me on ICQ # 2633350

Summary: Anyone who has a weight problem needs to read this.
Review: I did the WD program in Sept. 96 with a small group. I had lost 15 lbs. and the group stopped. I tried to do it on my own and someone told me about the book. I read it twice and still am trying to come out of the desert. The Lord has placed it on my heart to start a program out of my church and I have finally yeilded to Him. I will start a class in 2 wks. and am very excited. I too have tried alot of diets out there and really believe now that it is a spiritual issue. Praise God for the right direction He has sent me on.

Summary: The Weigh Down Diet is the way to go!
Review: The Weigh Down Diet is God's invitation to us to eat the way He wants us to eat. It is astonishing to see how far our eating habits has brought us. Statistics reveals that obesity has been the many causes of our physical, mental and emotional illnesses. God offers us a spiritual solution to our battle of dieting and overindulgence. Through the WDW, God made me free, not only from my bondage to food and commercial dieting but an inner healing took place in me, and as a result I lost 48 pounds and I do not have the desire to eat more than what my body needs. The Weigh Down Diet is the way to go. God's spiritual prescription really works!
