Summary: This book helped me work through the pain.
Review: I love this book! I find this book to be a valuable resource on dealing with my physicaly and emotionaly abusive family. It covers the various types of abuse, making it helpful for many Adult Children of Abuse. Most importantly, it helped me realize that I don't have to put up with my family's abuse anymore. It brought hope and support into my life!

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Encourages people to blame others for their problems.
Review: As I read the book I suddenly relized that what it really is: a way out for people that are unwilling to accept that they are responsible for their actions. I wonder how many families have been torn apart by someone that has read this book and decided that they are not responsible for the decisions that they have made in their lives.

Summary: This book can help you figure yourself out.
Review: My life changed after I read this book in 1988. I finally understood how my childhood shaped my adult life. I was able to forgive my parents for some of their behaviors toward me and my siblings. I don't care what they do with their lives, I just learned how to not let their dysfunctional behavior affect my life any longer.

I recently gave a copy of the book to my husband who also grew up in a dysfunctional family. He is not even finished with the book and has already come to a new understanding of his life. It has already started helping him break the grip of a controlling parent. He is really letting go.

We decided that we weren't going to continue the cycle that was started by our parents. We intend to raise our child in an emotionally healthy environment.

I recommend this book to everybody who wants to take control of their feelings and their life.

Summary: Extremely helpful work-book for therapists and clients
Review: Essential reading for anyone dealing with their own or patients'/clients' blockages in growing to be a healthy adult human being. Covers the whole spectrum of parental abuse and neglect and offers a tough yet feasible blue-print for healing. Extremely helpful for the huge number of people mired in feelings of guilt, shame and inadequacy.

Summary: A Definite MUST Read for any Child of Abusive Parents
Review: This is an excellent book for any adult child who has had to deal with the dysfunctions of an abusive parent or family household. Dr. Forward does a suberb job in providing the support and counseling that every abused child needs, and she manages to do it both effectively and compassionately.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: A book of healing, for those who survived a painful past
Review: Dr. Forward helps us define our present by looking into our past. She helps us to realize that the person we are now is deeply seeded in the child who was not nurtured. She helps us define exactly what form of neglect or abuse was suffered and then deal with our feelings in a systematic way. I found this book to be both eye opening and healing.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Everyone should read this book!
Review: This is an incredibly excellent book for those who are either adult children of Toxic parents or those who may have a relationship with an adult child of Toxic parents. I am a member of the second group I mentioned. Although I did not have toxic parents myself, I do deal with the hurt and the anger and the grief through a man I love very much. This book has given me some hope for his recovery and for our relationship. The next step is having him read this book and take the steps to realize his reality and to break the cycle before they get out of hand.

Summary: makes one realize how much upbringing does effect us
Review: I rarely finish a book in less than 2 weeks. This one took two days. "Toxic parents" seemed to apply not only to me, but 95% of what I hear my friends tell me. It didn't take me long to put 2-and-2 together before I started recommending this book. It really does get you on the right path if your willing and ready for positive change in your life

Summary: To blame or not to blame our parents
Review: While half or us would like to deny that our parents have a big (and sometimes bad) influence over us, the other half would gladly blame their parents for their adult life problems. This book is kind of a midpoint between both positions. It talks about the painful legacies we get from our parents but also makes us responsible for our adult behavior. It isn't theorical or complicated, it's easy and full with stories that covers almost everything from verbal to sexual abuse. Some people don't like the title, but believe me it can't be worst, the title in Spanish is "Padres que Odian" (Parent's that hate). If you were raised by a human been and not a saint there is a big chance you can relate with this book, but remember to read it as a son or daughter not as a parent

Summary: Love, Love, Love this Book!
Review: I have picked this book up time and again to read the same words and still depict new and insightful meaning from them. The reading is swift, easy, and a direct hit to the mind. Many of the concepts I read in this book have put my actual feelings into words and gave my agitation true focus, pinpointing it...finally! What relief!
Though I have been out of therapy for many moons, I've been missing those single hours of air and breath and honesty. This book helps me find those moments again, within myself. A most cherished gift to mankind indeed. I do not think you will be disappointed.
