Rating: Summary: calories info Review: I found it very motivating, but my only objection is, based on the whole idea of calorie control. My point is: Where the hell I am going to find caloric information regarding recipes and other complicated dishes we usually eat in restaurants. There are numerous dishes that from my point of view are very dificult to calculate the calories in order to control the "revenues". In general very simple and direct, easy to read and a lot of important information, good to know the logic behind diet-exercise-state of mine relationship.
Rating: Summary: If losing weight were really this easy! Review: Having been around the fitness and weight loss industry for about as long as the author of the book, I can tell you from firsthand experience that there are so many other factors that are involved with losing weight that this book doesn't (and couldn't) even begin to cover. The most consistent feature I encounter is denial...my situation is not that bad. Do not underestimate this power. It can entirely take over a person's relationships, living patterns and expectations consistently and recurrently (frequently after initial euphoria re. feeling empowered). In the beginning section of the book Karas states that he never expects a client to fail. Indeed, how could you at $10,000/week? One could certainly ask the question as to whether fees such as this contribute to the ultimate feelings of victimization in clients, potential clients, or for that matter, anyone who needs to lose weight. The role of victim fits nicely into the lives of many who look at their problem as the result of influences beyond their control..."I can't do this because I have x to do" or "If my husband/wife would only help me out more, I could have time for this". In the lives of those predisposed to adopting this pattern of thinking, what is likely result in the larger picture? A few winners per thousand losers. Much like the real expected results given the living patterns of people involved in these goals. It is about time trainers writing these books stop idealizing their real opinions and feelings about the nature of their profession. Long term success rates dealing with the obese and their success at keeping off weight are in the vicinity of 2-3%. To be sure, your chances of success are much higher when seeking qualified professional help. However, I find it incredible that people do not feel more victimized by the blatant attempt to further fleece the needy by capitalizing on their insecurities. From the trainer's side, trust me, you only hear about the success stories in books like these. Even in situations that are handled perfectly from a psychologically diplomatic standpoint by the trainer, failure is often a result and it would be naive, as well as egotistical to assume that after a lifetime of reinforcement of ineffective behaviors on behalf of the client that all of a sudden "I'm going to come in here and change your life". Leave the religion in church.
Rating: Summary: excellent book !!!!!!!!! Review: At first I thought the title is a little silly, but don't let that keep you from buying this fabulous book!!! Finally somebody explains why all this aerobic exercise doesn't really help you in order to lose weight. If you want to lose your fat weighttraining is the answer!!!! Since everybody tells you to do lots of aerobics to lose weight (burn fat) I used to believe it. Now that i've read and tried what Jim Karas talks about I've totally changed my mind about aerobic exercise. Don't get me wrong, I still do it, since it's agreat way to get fit. I still believe that everybody shoul do it too, but mow I focus a lot more on strength training than I used to (not at all). I think a lot of women are afraid to become too bulky through weighttraining. All I can say is: don't be!! At least try it and you'll be positively surprised. Good luck to everyone!!!
Rating: Summary: Great book for those already motivated Review: I like the book/approach as well. I have about 20 pounds to lose and 6 weeks ago I made a lifestyle change in my eating habits. I have been on a 5 day/week diet (salad for lunch and fruits for supper) which I thought was unique until I saw it criticized in Jim's book last weekend! It has been working for me though - I am losing an average of one pound/week. I don't binge on the weekends though as I think Jim assumes. This is the first diet/exercise book I have purchased and it was his research as well as the included exercise plan that led me to purchase the book. I had been swimming/skating 3-4 hours/week but now I will concentrate more on the weight training to see how that works as well. Not being a fitness expert it is hard to know who to recommend this book too. It's more of a "fine-tuning/guidance" book for me. You should already be motivated and exercising regularly and you must be willing to change your diet (assuming that is a problem).
Rating: Summary: This one works! Review: Forget all those quick-fix weight loss programs out there. The Business Plan for the Body offers the reader the only true method for losing weight and keeping it off: monitoring calories and including exercise in one's life. I had forgotten this in light of all those fancy programs that promise you the world. Even some of the point-based programs give you too many calories; though I stayed within my points, I wasn't losing. It was frustrating, to say the least. I stumbled upon this book and have been delighted with its easy-to-read format and sensible suggestions. I lost 52 pounds in my early 20s using a very similar behavior modification program, but somehow I lost sight of the importance of "calories in--calories out." Jim Karas has reminded me of that, and has also given me a solution to the muscle loss that I am sure I am now experiencing in my late thirties. I only have ten pounds to lose, but I know this will do it for me and keep me on track. I've been on the plan for a week and though I only lost about a pound and a half so far, I can already see a difference in my body. I can get into a skirt that I couldn't two weeks ago! That works for me! I fully plan to incorporate this program into my lifestyle. Yes, it may seem simple and elementary, but we've forgotten the critical importance of the lowly calorie in favor of monitoring fat grams, sugar, carbs, etc. Get this book! It could change your life! (By the way, I ordered three starter products from SPRI and it only cost me $17--hand weights and the exercise ball were at Target for just $10 and $17 respectively. Not bad for a beginner's home gym!)
Rating: Summary: Highly motivating, well written Review: I learned about this book because the author worked with ABC News' Diane Sawyer to lose weight. This book is very motivating with many helpful suggestions on changes to make to your lifestyle to lose weight and keep it off. The Plan is very much exercise driven. This is not another grapefruit diet book.
Rating: Summary: This book will save your life. Review: Karas lays it on the line, fat is FAT. Face it and get on with doing something about it. Follow his lead and you can lose weight and tone your body, like you'll only believe if you do it and see the results. Trust him, he knows of what he speaks! It takes discipline and a strong desire to change bad habits. Just get started, don't wait, time is wasting. At 70 yrs. of age, I wish I had read this book when I was a bit younger. My health is still 'good' and I'm going to work to make it even better.
Rating: Summary: Has some good points... Review: I would actually rate this book about 3 1/2 stars. I felt the author went way overboard with the business analogies and terminology and I grew quite tired of that aspect of the book. I felt that the overall ideas in the book--calories out vs. calories in and that you must use weight training if you want to maintain permanent weight loss--were solid ideas that should be known by anyone attempting to lose weight and stop the yo-yo dieting. I found the exercise portion of the book to be a bit too simplistic and didn't stress the use of free weights enough, but if you have never attempted weight training as part of your exercise program then it might be a good starting point for you.
Rating: Summary: Tremendous Review: Jim Karas' executive approach to weight loss is a winner, which helped me to downsize my gut and will hopefully help my wife to fire her a**.
Rating: Summary: Best diet on the market Review: I was what I call on a plateau for 2 years. Trying about every diet on the planet. I discovered Jim's diet and knew this was the plan for me. I have just started my 4th week and have lost 8 lbs so far. My goal is another 12lbs. Exercise is the key to this plan. I invested in the Spri products he suggested (cost me about $60) and invested in a heart rate monitor. I created a food and exercise journal and have been faithful at writing everything down. The key to this plan is stay focused. You can really eat what you want, but when your calories are used up, you are done for the day. I find my fruit and veggie intake has soared. Anyone who has tried a diet and failed, should try this plan -- it truly is the best diet on the market and the safest one in my opinion.
