Rating: Summary: Use "Positive Energy" to increase your intuition & happiness Review: "There is an energetic bond between everyone on earth. This life-changing realization is missing in our world. Once it becomes real...our sense of separateness dissolves...Until we recognize each other as brother and sister, it is still night."In Positive Energy, traditionally trained clinical psychiatrist Judith Orloff discusses the malaise in our rushed, tense culture; and dispenses ten prescriptions to deal with the crises in energy we all face. She states, "We've learned to tolerate tired, joyless states as normal. We must shift this socially condoned pattern of madness." Orloff has dramatic empirical evidence to the reality that she is a "spiritual empath," one who sense, or intuits, dynamics at work which others may not perceive. She persuasively describes ways for others to explore their empathetic energy, and to deal more vibrantly with the world. Orloff says, "Our culture's worship of the intellect has caused our intuition to atrophy." Just as rational scientific thought can't solve or, at times, even address our medical issues, so too a pharmaceutical, chemical prescriptions may be worth much less than intuitive or spiritual cures. Orloff advises, "we need to retool the medical school curriculum to teach people how to sense and access the full range of their energy reserves." In Positive Energy, Orloff suggests that by applying one's intuition - a blend of imagination, heart and intellect - one can bring creativity and aliveness to enrich and heal our daily troubles. She advises her readers to consider the practice of ten prescriptions: Awaken Intuition and Rejuvenate Yourself Find a Nurturing Spiritual Path Design an Energy-Aware Approach to Diet, exercise, and Health Generate Positive Emotional Energy to Counter Negativity Develop a Heart-Centered Sexuality Open Yourself to the Flow of Creativity and Inspiration Replenish the Sacredness of Laughter, Pampering, and the Replenishment of Retreat Attract Positive People and Situations Protect Yourself from Energy Vampires Create Abundance She details each prescription with concrete exercises, and anecdotes from real life. Each prescription follows with a personal story from contributors to Positive Energy, such as Quincy Jones, Rosa Parks, Eve Ensler. I especially enjoyed Larry King confiding that he initially "choked" when he'd reached his long-sought goal of becoming a radio interviewer; and then confided to his listeners, "This is my first day ever on the air. I prayed for this all my life, and I can't think of anything to say." Orloff's prescriptions describe basic self-care methods that have gone by the wayside in this techno-crazed, terrorized, polluted, stress-riddled world. She also expands on concepts that may seem simple, but are made effective by attention, compassion, and focus. Interspersed throughout her writing, some of these tenets are: Breathe, rest, walk, treat yourself with compassion. Regard others with the same attention and compassion. "Make conscious, visible, and audible the quiet hidden vibes," like blessing a gift, or talking to a plant. Pose a question and attend the intuitive response. "Follow the bird crumbs of creativity" with an open mind; have abundant expectations. Anything can happen if you don't limit your expectations. Visit an energetically uplifting place - oracles, where, in silence and listening, comfort and solutions emerge. Increase your gratitude litany - find new things that to be grateful for. Pace yourself to avoid the burnout from constant rushing. Listen, with attention and compassion, both to both to oneself and in interaction with others. Just start moving in the right direction "[Get] out of your ego (even if you're "right") and into self preservation" Adopt a Mantra, a personal prayer Recognize and choose live food, instead of fast, over-processed groceries. Give your dreams breathing room Luxuriate in the sensuality of everyday experiences, like taking a shower And my favorite: "Pledge to value even the tiniest of triumphs. That's what the art of living is about." In reading this book, it was almost witchy how the information seemed tailor-made for me, the reader Angry at a conflict caused by miscommunication, I spent my energy writing in a tablet. After four pages of angry justification, I arrived, naturally, flowingly, at a positive, loving resolution of my conflict. Worried about a prospective visit with a relative who drained my energy, I looked for ways we could laugh together. We had a wonderful day with each other. Annoyed with cell-phone users in public places, I examined my negativity and realized I have a strong sensitivity to noise intrusion. I have to take the initiative to protect myself from overbearing noise by avoiding it or removing myself from it when I can. Wondering how I could connect with a woman in a certain position, I followed the "bread crumbs" in pursuing creativity. Moments later, I came across just such a woman in Dr. Orloff's book. This spontaneous synchronicity is a fascinating by-product of attending one's intuition. Pressured with the hectic pace of growing deadlines, I had the wonderfully vibrant experience one day of surrendering my "adulthood" and howling for my mother as I traipsed, windblown, through a deserted courtyard. The experience was invigorating and recharged my batteries. Orloff gives her advice in an honest, simple manner, concentrating on action and techniques. She admits to being "passionately practical." She admits her own habits of over-extending herself, of being too serious. She uses organic and informal terms, like 'mind-boggingly' and 'scarily malignant.' Positive Energy concludes with a resource list and a bibliography for further research in the subjects of energy fields and developing positive energy. Just as the medical field once disdained the findings that doctors themselves could spread germs on their unwashed hands, one day the disdain for psychic or energy knowledge will itself seem incredible. Orloff is in the vanguard of a "renaissance sweeping modern health care" where the concept of energy and intuition are being used to promote true health. She is in the company of Dr. Mehmet Oz, cardiothoracic surgeon; Danny Sheehan, anti-corruption lawyer; and Phil Jackson, pro basketball coach, in seeking to better our world by paying attention to the unseen influences of life.
Rating: Summary: A FASCINATING Look at Personal Energy !!! Review: As a culture we are skeptical about anything that hasn't been "proven" scientifically, ignoring our own intuitions and centuries of human wisdom that there is more to ourselves and what happens between us and other people than conventional psychiatric thinking can really sufficiently explain. Walking down a city sidewalk we may move toward some people and away from others based on a "feeling" or "vibe" we get about their safety or lack of it. Spending time with some people makes us feel energized, while others quickly exhaust us. Dr. Judith Orloff's book Positive Energy explains those feelings of being energized or drained after being around other people in terms of the actual energy fields that surround all of us. A classically trained psychiatrist and Associate Professor at UCLA, Dr. Orloff is among a group of cutting-edge physicians involved in exploring the science of Energy Psychiatry . In Positive Energy she describes our subtle personal energies in easily understood terms and then offers 10 detailed prescriptions for living a more joyfully centered and positively energized life, including how to effectively deal with the kinds of "energy-vampires" that rob of us of our energy, such as technology overload, workaholism and various kinds of draining people (among them: endless talkers, drama queens, sob sisters and critical in-laws and bosses). Particularly interesting to me was her discussion of people, including herself, who she describes as "intuitive empaths"...sensitive people who are so tuned into the thoughts and energy of other people that they are easily overloaded and overwhelmed. Everyone can benefit from learning how other other people's energy affects their own but for intuitive empaths it is an especially vital skill. The book is filled with stories of people who are using their understanding of energy psychiatry to improve their lives, including Quincy Jones, Naomi Judd and Jamie Lee Curtis. We seem to be living in an age of mass-exhaustion, accepting endless joy killing stressors as normal and popping pills to make up the difference. This book is a life manual to a different way of seeing things that makes sense and can make a huge difference in the way you approach the quality of your life.
Rating: Summary: Positive Energy Review: Do not overlook this book! Judith Orloff transends the hypocritical preconceived concepts of both psychiatry and religion and gives the true spirit of practical healing.
'Positive Energy' presents one with tools to truely integrate intangible spiritual ideas into one's own life.
Rating: Summary: Inspiring Tools for Change Review: Dr. Judith Orloff's book is a revelation full of insight gleaned from her own personal experiences as an intuitive empath and as a psychiatrist. I particularly love the structure of the book. In each chapter she lays out the situations that call for the particular prescription covered in that chapter (including funny personal stories and case histories). Then she details the prescription: meditations, exercises to try alone or with others, questions to ask yourself, then the chapter ends with a treat you can give yourself embodies the chapter topic. One of my favorite parts of the book is another section closing each chapter. It's something Dr. Orloff says she's included for the first time in this book: interviews with prominent people. Each weigh-in with their thoughts on dealing with energy: from Jamie Curtis on protecting your energy, Quincy Jones on intuition, Wavvy Gravy on the healing powers of laughter to Rosa Parks on the power of love. I really got a lot out of the chapter on self-nurturing and comforting. I've been benefiting from the heart chakra and white light meditations as well. I'd actually been reading some amazing books that all seemed to have echoes of the same message: Eckart Tolle's The Power of Now, Deepak Chopra's The Way of the Wizard and The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire: Harnessing the Infinite Power of Coincidence, Gary Zukov's The Dancing Wu Li Masters, bell hooks' All About Love: New Visons, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, Ruth Ross' Prospering Woman as well as a strange little book I've just read entitled The Kybalion: Hermetic Philosophy. A lot of the ideas touched on in Positive Energy, such as the laws of attraction, really resonate with the ideas in this little book on universal laws. Amazing how all of these things are connected. I was so excited to find that her ideas evoke a lot of the traditions I've been inspired by as well: shamanism, Buddhist and Asian philosophy, and the concepts of alchemy as it pertains to the spirit and personal growth. I also recently attended a great series of women's spiritual empowerment workshops where they gave assignments that were very similar to Dr. Orloff's exercises (random acts of anonymous kindness, daily meditation, affirmations, gratitude journals, etc.). So, I was struck once again by the synchronicity. In Positive Energy Dr. Orloff writes refreshingly clear and witty prose bringing together insights culled from ancient esoteric knowledge, the world's religious traditions, modern psychiatry and her own brand of empathic intuitive wisdom. Her book has been extremely helpful, encouraging and inspiring to me. It's filled with practical tools for change. What a gift.

Rating: Summary: Sense and Change the Energy in Your Life Review: Energy psychiatrist Dr. Judith Orloff shares ten heartfelt tips to help you sense and transform the energies around you in order to make better choices and improve the quality of your relationships in her book, POSITIVE ENERGY. You can learn to sense the energy fields or "vibes" surrounding you and other people, places and things -- and by doing so, gain tremendous intuitive insight, poise, and confidence in even the most difficult situations. POSITIVE ENERGY provides clear descriptions of how various kinds of energy ranging from delightfully positive to destructively negative feel, so you can more readily decipher your own physiological and emotional reactions to people and situations. For example, when you meet someone new and notice your body experiencing sudden otherwise inexplicable aches and pains, you're picking up strong negative vibes which should not be ignored! What I like best about POSITIVE ENERGY is the way it brings the concept of bioenergy fields into everyday life, through exercises, stories, and interviews with people from all walks of life (Jamie Lee Curtis, Eve Ensler, Wavy Gravy, Amy Gross, Quincy Jones, Naomi Judd, Larry King, Shirley MacLaine, Rosa Parks, Iyanla Vanzant). POSITIVE ENERGY shines a light into even the darkest places, and provides new techniques for healing ourselves and our world. -- Cynthia Sue Larson author of "Aura Advantage: How the Colors in Your Aura Help You Attain What You Desire and Attract Success"
Rating: Summary: Inspiring and useful Review: I am a fan of Dr. Orloff's work, which dovetails the heart and mind into the art and science of Western medicine and psychotherapy. I have read her three books and have the companion set of CD's to Intuitive Healing as well. Positive energy: Ten extraordinary prescriptions for transforming fatigue, stress, and fear into vibrance, strength, and love is a major contribution to the field of positive psychology facilitating our connection to energy through our own natural resources and abilities (e.g., sense of humor, creativity, inspiration, sexuality, intuition, and the breath). Both professional health practitioners and lay people alike can benefit from reading it. In a comprehensive and holistic manner, it is chockfull of practical and inspiring information and suggestions (e.g., using the power of prayer in the context of the Mystery of life, meditations, stories, and guided imagery) that we can use to enhance our well being through utilizing our innate subtle energy. To customize her positive energy program for each individual, Dr. Orloff invites us to experiment and create an individual list or journal of solutions from these recommendations and to lose the rest. The book is also available in different forms including CD. I especially appreciated the large print edition. Thinking Dr. Orloff had gone Hollywood (commercial), I was initially skeptical about the book's inclusion of writings from famous people, but found their contributions genuine, worthwhile, and inspiring. Although she repeats some stories and themes from her previous work, this book expands and transcends her earlier work with respect with its attention to and application of how energy affects us all. As a male, I noticed many of the anecdotes are written from a feminine perspective as Dr. Orloff appears to be the ultra embodiment of the feminine archetype. She does, however, refer to Native American Shamans as an example that everyone including males can develop intuition. As an aside standing on my own soap box, the dominant Anglo American culture limits men from embracing this natural gift. I have yet to find a book about intuition and healing, especially written for men. Dedicated to healing, the book is a passionate, poignant, and heartening guide to fully being in this world. As an act of love, positive energy radiates from its pages. It is a lifeline connecting the sublime to what is most real here and now. Thank-you Dr. Orloff for empowering the awareness and manifestation of the nascent positive energy readily available in life. EMAHO! (Tibetan for "cosmic delight")
Rating: Summary: Positive Energy Review: I am a middle-age lady, a mother of three children, a new comers to Canada, I have to face lots of barriers to get a job here. I have to go to school to be certified for the job I have done for many years in my home country. I was depressed in the last few weeks, because of so many things, like too much work for my school, lesson plans and assignments, having the restrict associate teacher, missing my husband who is away from home to work, missing my family overseas, and so many other things. I did not have energy to get out of the bed and not even motivation to do anything, no appetite to eat. One day I decided to go out for a walk and I went to Chapters, at the entrance table I saw a book named Positive Energy, I grabbed it, that was what I wanted at that moment. I sat there and read the first few pages, it helped me gain a little bit of my energy. From that day on, I read the book everyday. It helped me a lot. Now I feel much better. I just wanted to share this with you, I hope nobody ever feels down but in case someone needs to get energy and motivation, I would strongly recommend this book.
