Rating: Summary: If It Works...Print it again Review: Yes this is last years calendar reprinted on a poor paper choice. If it is not recycled paper then it is the cheapest paper I have ever used. Otherwise this is a good calendar full of great advise.
Rating: Summary: This is a book about Oprah Winfrey Review: I was disappointed that so much of what he writes about is directly related to Oprah Winfrey's court case in the South. I cannot separate Oprah's $30 million salary from how "real" she is, according to the author. Oprah solved her problems with "real" money. Tough to relate my "reality" to hers. But there are some common sensible tips in the book if you have the patience to sift through all the "I'm friends with Oprah" stuff. It's not the kind of book that I couldn't put down. I put it down several times and skipped a lot of words and still got his point. My advice: Borrow the book and read a few chapters here and there. It's not a masterpiece.
Rating: Summary: The Best Way To Change Your Life Review: I absolutely loved this book! Dr. Phil presents everything in a very direct way, which is a great way to generate results. It is a very user-friendly resource that I recommend for anyone who wants to take his or her life to the next level. The things I've learned in this book will last me a lifetime. The tools ('Life Laws') have become the core of my life. I live by them and they have helped me see my life in a new and inspiring way! THIS ONE IS A MUST!!!
Rating: Summary: Envision it and go after it! Review: Goals, goals, goals! We know and hear enough to think that we should probably set some, but Phil carefully points out that everything in your life, good, bad & ugly, is a result of what you have chosen. Set goals and chose paths, be clear about what you want. Great book for staying focused on the important things. I find myself going back to it often, this keeps me focused.
Rating: Summary: Best of all self help books Review: Wow, what a book! The words and advice in this book transmit truthfulness and common sense that you just do not get in other self help books. I am now 55 years old and over the years have read many books that have been written to assist readers improve their lives. The books range from eastern philosophy to having a spirit or angel guide assist you through life. I can see now after all this time that many authors deliberately expound way out or supernatural beings merely to have something different to say and of course boost sales. Sorry to say that, hard as I try, I have yet to be find my spirit guide or see an angel (with the exception of the wife that is). The authors of such books, I am sure, would say that I have either not tried hard enough or looked in the wrong places. On the other hand Dr Phil McGraw's every word 'rings authority'. His analysis of human interactions and how to come up with a strategy that works can only have come from personal experience and the evidence of helping many other people over a long period of time. In order to fully understand what he was saying took me 3 readings of the book. That is not a reflection on Dr Phil's writing, but more on my own limitations and the sheer depth he goes to. I can honestly say that after putting into practice some aspects of the writing I now feel more confident about my personal interactions because they have improved which generates yet more confidence. This is because I no longer worry about whether or not I am saying or doing the right thing as I now take total ownership of the consequences and am rather more careful than previously. I hope it is now quality as opposed to the previous quantity that comes from my mouth and actions. I can see by how others 'reflect back' that a fundamental change has been made within me and I have no need for a spirit guide or angel even if they exist. That is not to say that I have totally got it together and probably never will, however, I know that this book by Dr Phil has given me the knowledge to continue improving mine and I hope others lives in the future. My one reservation about this book is all the references to Oprah Winfrey and her trial. I realise that being Dr Phil's first book and that it was she who give him publicity he probably thought 'naming' her would give him credibility. I found it boring and unecessary as the rest of the book more than stands by itself - hence my 4 star rating
Rating: Summary: What my daddy said. Review: When I was little my daddy would always say, "Cammy. There's three kind of people in this here world. Them's that makes things happen. Them's that watches things happen. And them's that wonders what the heck just happened. Make sure you're always them of first kind." That was good advice. Thanks, Dad. I'm sure it was my daddy's philosophy that led me to this book. The ten golden rules, according to McGraw, are: (He calls them "life laws".) #1: You either get it, or you don't. Become one of those who gets it. #2: You create your own experience. Acknowledge and accept accountability for your life. #3: People do what works. Identify the payoffs that drive your behavior and that of others. #4: You cannot change what you do not acknowledge. Get real with yourself about your life and everybody in it. #5: Life rewards action. Make careful decisions and then pull the trigger. #6: There is no reality; only perception. Identify the filters through which you view the world. #7: Life is managed; it is not cured. Learn to take charge of your life. #8: We teach people how to treat us. Own, rather than complain about how people treat you. #9: There is power in forgiveness. Open your eyes to what anger and resentment are doing to you. #10: You have to name it before you can claim it. Get clear about what you want and take your turn. As you can see my daddy was right on the money. For an uneducated man he was pretty dang smart. Daddy said it. Lee Ann Womack sang it in her hit song "I Hope You Dance", "...And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance. Dance . . . I hope you dance." And now Phillip McGraw writes it. Be proactive, rather than reactive. A great book for anyone who is searching to take charge of their life. Cammy Diaz-Lawyer
Rating: Summary: But how do I get the million dollars? Review: I was reminded (when I read this book) of the old Steve Martin joke... "I can tell you how to get a million dollars tax free. First...you get a million dollars....." In the same way Dr. Phil promises that all we have to do is figure out what is blocking us....what prevents us from attaining our goals, and we will be able to fix everything. I never made it to the "fixes" 'cause I don't know how to figure out what the problems are. If I knew that, I probably wouldn't need the book! There was really nothing concrete or useful for me in this book. A shame really, because I like Dr. Phil and appreciate his no nonsence style. But if I can't get the million dollars, the info on the tax break "ain't" gonna help me one bit.
Rating: Summary: Life Strategies Review: I'm a big "self-help" fan but this is definitely one of my favorite books. It is a great book and Phillip McGraw is an excellent Psychologist. I love his "tell it like it is" style. This is a pull up your sleeves and get to work book. It does not sugar coat issues. It was very helpful and motivational.
Rating: Summary: Is this guy real? Review: Dont buy this book, you could get more wisdom from fortune cookie fortunes! This was the most incredibly trite book I have ever read....half of the book is an ancedote focused on Oprah....he writes 5 page acedotes that dont make any sense or tie to any point...it was impossible to read without getting extremely frustrated...it was so bad that of our book club of 8 people only 1 read it all the way through and even though I was the facilitator of the book club meeting featuring this I couldnt even get through it....
Rating: Summary: Oh! It's Dr. Phil! Review: I didn't realize this was Dr. Phil until I looked at the box after opening my Amazon.com package. Dr. Phil, straight from the hip, in day by day nuggets. I got it for a Christmas present for one person in my life who is struggling with momentus life changes, but I'm going to order a few more for those of us who would like to enrich our lives with a little introspection in bite-size, manageable pieces.
