Rating: Summary: Get the Message: Straight from the Shoulder Review: Self-help books vary a lot in two areas: How much specific direction the book gives you (most give principles and not much detail) and how directly they address the problem (usually authors avoid being blunt). LIFE STRATEGIES is good in both of these regards, and gained my respect and attention. I could use it to make immediate life improvements. I found LIFE STRATEGIES also refreshing in that it was not filled with self-congratulating personal success stories like a lot of these self-help books are. Because of the range of principles and issues that LIFE STRATEGIES addresses, I would recommend this book to anyone who was functioning without regular psychiatric help. If you only read one "change your personal life for the better" book this year, read this one. If you want to learn even more about making better personal decisions, read SMART CHOICES. For good advice on how to rouse yourself to make a change, read WHO MOVED MY CHEESE?
Rating: Summary: Phenomenal!!! Review: This guy is fantastic - I love how he tells you to take responsibility for your life. We're too quick to place blame elsewhere... Truth is, no one has a perfect or easy life. But we have to play the cards we're dealt. No more excuses for me - only action towards the best possible life I can live and becoming the best possible person I can be. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Dr. McGraw. I am indebted forever!
Rating: Summary: A concrete, step-by-step program for life changes Review: After throwing the book across the room several times (how dare he say that I played a part) I finally got sick & tired of being sick & tired. The step-by-step approach is exactly what I needed -- a concrete way to start taking charge and really living my life--again. Thanks Dr. McGraw.
Rating: Summary: Takes away excuses, gets results. Review: In life you can make excuses or make money and achieve success. You can't have both and that is the main theme of this book. Too many people look at themselves as victims. As Dr McGraw explains, if you feel that way then you will stay that way. No tip toeing through the tulips in this book. Dr McGraw gets right on your case and tells it how it really is and should be. Everyone and anyone who wants maximum success must read this book. I also highly recommend Maximum Achievement by Brian Tracy and SuperSelf by the late great Charles Givens.
Rating: Summary: Control your life Review: Reading this book has made me stop and really take a hard look at myself and my life. This is something that people in the US so rarely do. I can see how some readers may not like what Dr. McGraw has to say, because unlike so many other people in his field, he takes away all your excuses. He does not allow you to be a victim and to blame others or events for your problems. If you really want to improve your life, self esteem...etc and are willing to answer hard questions then this book will absolutely make a difference.
Rating: Summary: Good Book But Too Much Phil Review: This is an excellent book. However, as Dr. Phil recommends in his book, he has an obvious conviction that he is the most important person in his life. The book is filled with, "you will say thank you Phil", "I am telling you because I know" and other similar phrases. Excellent Content but egotistical writer. The book is also too hard on people, but that is instrumental in achieving the book's purpose. All in all I am convinced with Phil's thoughts and I fully agree with his life strategies. But I do maintain that he is a little too pushy and what could take him a page to write takes him a chapter because of his pushiness; but that again is consistent with his purpose; However, it has caused me to put the book down a number of times at the beginning. Very Helpfull book Phil, but tone yourself down a little bit; you are getting too close.
Rating: Summary: Keep your eyes open and play an active role in your life Review: The point of this book is to tell you to actually decide what you want out of life and to go after it. You will find a way to obtain it-just be proactive. No one else's opinions matter, just put those thoughts on the sidelines.
Rating: Summary: Nothing but the facts Review: It seems to me that the criticisms directed at Dr. McGraw take issue with his "just the facts, ma'am," approach -- some readers seem unable to appreciate a fundamental psychological truth unless it's fluffed up in fancy academic-speak or New Age babble. But there's plenty of sophisticated teaching here, for those who'll listen. McGraw isn't fussing over whether we've mastered the topspin backhand -- he just wants us to get the ball over the net, time after time. Can-do advice, without the trendy nonsense of a lot of other self-help books. A fast-paced, disquieting, and at times very funny read: "Jesse Ventura does therapy."
Rating: Summary: Life changing. Review: I have read the book and presently I am taking the time to do the recommended exercises after each Lesson of Life. I enjoy the book and have incorporated a number of life's lessons in my own life. The results are remarkable not only in the behavior of others but also in my attitude. I awake each morning with a purpose instead of barely crawling out of bed. I can not speak for anyone else, but this has truly been a positive experience for me.
Rating: Summary: A GREAT ATTITUDE CHANGER IN THE BEST OF WAYS Review: As a person who spent all their life with a hateful attitude, I wanted to change that aspect of my life and be a winner. You either get a new you, or you remain ignorant. This book contains alot of stuff that I already knew but just didn't know how to put it in action. It helped me to take a long hard look at myself and face the truth about myself. And, showed me how to change my way of thinking more like a winner. Now, I have a much more positive outlook about life. I passsed this book on to my son to read it and change his attitude which was like mine and generations before me. We are determined to walk through life feeling better about ourselves and everyone around us. Thank you doctor Phil and Thank you Oprah for helping us discover about life. Robert and David Brewster
