Rating: Summary: This book beats the same message over and over Review: I did not learn anything I did not already know. I thought the point of the book was to help you set a strategy for your life, but there is a strong assumption that your life is off course. My life is not off course, I am not making poor behavior choices, and I do "get it" already. I want to have a stronger strategy and direction, but I'm not sinking or sunk as his writing implies. I'm told over and over how I need to take responsibility (I aleady do! ) and how I need to see the real truths (I already do! ) etc. I feel like I was preached to, but I don't need converting. It was an annoying waste of time. Only people whose lives are screwed up should buy this book - not those of us with good lives looking to make them better.
Rating: Summary: I absolutely loved this book, it teaches you so many things Review: I'm only 17 yrs. old, so there were a lot of things that i couldn't understand how to deal with, (because i've never experienced them). Such as when Phil explained how to be a better parent, or recovering from a arduous time in you life. But I certainly learned from it, so when, or if it happens, I am prepared and know how to respond and recover from it. This is the first Pshychologist book I've ever read,so it was alittle different. But I love listening to Dr. Laura Schlesinger, I have learned a lot. Phil teaches you how to look inside you, how to respond and recover from bad times in your life, and much much more. You just need to keep a postitive attitude about yourself, and need to be willing to change; and you'll do great.
Rating: Summary: A Must-Read Review: For those who crave self-improvement, or find themselves needing to change something about their lives.....this book can help! I have thoroughly enjoyed it and in the process overcome life-long habits and fears. I can see where certain parts of the book are redundant and/or boring....But the interesting parts far outweigh those! EVERYONE out there, I believe, can benefit from this book. Keep an open mind!!
Rating: Summary: I wish I had not wasted my money Review: I was suprised at the high average rating this book has. All I got from the book was feeling like I had a large cheerleader saying "go for it - compete - winning is EVERYTHING - no matter what the cost...You must have a goal & win or your life is no good". What about the journey? What about stopping to smell the roses?? I got tired just reading his book! "His" principles are good common sense. I was reading it going, "and yes? Your point is what? Nothing new here". I have worked very hard for a very long time & have learned that it is the journey that counts. And that you DO NOT always have control over what happens to you. Only in your perception, and response, and attitude.
Rating: Summary: Great techniques that work! Review: Some of the strategies in this book may be idealistic, but most techniques really work and are practical. Sure, the author incorporates his life philosophy into each chapter, but that won't hurt as he leaves the reader free to decide if this or that is for him or not. Another book that discusses key issues of life rather bluntly, and it has helped me tremendously, so I highly recommend it, is Dietmar Scherf's "I Love Me: Avoiding and Overcoming Depression" which is also available at Amazon.com
Rating: Summary: When the student is ready the teacher will appear Review: I read this book as my friend,a Catholic priest, recommended it at Mass! I was surprised by the unconventional nature of the recommedation so I decided to read it. I am responding here as I have read the other reviews and understand the positive and the negative reviews both. I loved the book but I understand why someone else would think it cliche or trite or just plain silly. I agree there is nothing new in the book. Why should there be? We have been on the planet a long time and it is unrealistic to assume that Dr.McGraw would invent "THE ANSWER" for the first time. Nonetheless he does an answer to so many of life's problems. One has to be ready to hear it however.I consider the book analogous to the wisdom of alcoholics anonymous."One day at a time","Remember when" and Live and let live" are silly cliches too.But when you are ready for them they become profound. If you are ready this book is a Godsend. It isn't the only one of its kind but the trick is in you not in the book you read. ....Say,...I think that's what the lesson is after all!
Rating: Summary: There is now hope. Review: . My attitude has changed so much. If anything I now feel there is hope for my life, and can't wait to go on with it. For the last 20 years of my life I felt as if all the energy I could gather up just went to not ending my life. I was so unhappy and could not shake it. I did not think there was anything I could do about my unhappiness. I believe this book and man saved my life. Dr. Phil is the fist Dr. that has ever made sense.
Rating: Summary: An excellent book for people who want to change Review: Phil McGraw's approach in conditioning people to change and stand up for oneself is excellent. His short stories of other people's experiences can provide valuable insight on how to deal with people in certain situations. This book gives great detail on how to accomplish things in life the way you see fit. I would recommend this book to people who are ambitious in getting results. This book helps you to see who is responsible for the consequences and who is accountable for making changes in his or her life. A must read for people who want to control their own lives.
Rating: Summary: Physician/"brain-author" sees this as practical truth... Review: Saw this book on the best seller list for Amazon and ordered it. Was very impressed with Dr. McGraw's command of human nature and his pragmatic approach to dealing with the deck of cards given to us by life. For pragmatic stuff on the brain, try "The care and feeding of your brain" if I may (the author, Ken Giuffre MD).
Rating: Summary: wonderful book Review: Life Strategies is a remarkable book for anyone wishing to improve his or her direction in life. I enjoyed this book. Those who are looking for books on self-improvement might also enjoy The Best Things in Life Are Free.
