Rating: Summary: No More Namby-Pamby Advice Review: I bought this book unaware that Dr. Phil was an Oprah guru -- had I known that, I might not have acquired it. However, as an acknowledged self-help junkie, I have to say -- this is the BEST book I've ever read in the genre. His no-nonsense style and constant reality checking really hit home -- and often in a painful way. I have given several copies as gifts (only to people who will take it in the right way, of course!), and have heard equally enthusiastic comments in return. Thanks Dr. Phil -- straight talk is just what I -- and I suspect, most of us -- need.
Rating: Summary: Nothing New Here Review: Frankly, I don't understand why this book got so many raves. I found it unbearable. The book consists of "new-agey" statements of the obvious intermixed with demonstrations by the author of his own self-importance. I'm sure McGraw is a great trial strategist, but as the "life lessons" contained in his book are nothing but common sense, I fail to understand his special qualifications as a "life strategist."
Rating: Summary: Phillip C. McGraw can make you be a better person.. Review: This was the very first book I ever read by Phillip C. McGraw...I call him Dr. Phil and you will feel like calling him Dr. Phil too after you read this book. He tells it likes it is and you will be able to help yourself, know yourself, and begin a happy life. Good Reading
Rating: Summary: Time for a Reality Check Review: Seldom am I so moved and challenged by a book that I tell everyone I know about it. Dr. McGraw is truly the "tell it like it is" therapist. He does not mince words, sugar coat issues or molly coddle around. He is in your face about what is and what is not working in your life. This is a book for people who are willing to look at their lives, take responsibility for their choices and get with the program. If you are not prepared to do the work, which is very difficult, painful and brutally honest, don't waste your money or time on this book. If however, you are prepared to take an honest look at who you are, you can benefit tremendously from the personal inventory and homework. Having said that, understand it is life-long homework. Don't expect to see any changes if you are not fully prepared to commit yourself to this process. Dr. McGraw made me think about and take responsibility for the things I have done, which quite frankly, I would rather have avoided. These things were not pretty, but necessary for me to understand why I have created the life I have. It is only through this learning process that I have been able to make some monumental changes in my life. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to embark on the journey to truly understanding successful relationships.

Rating: Summary: Life Changing Review: This book in now the most highly recommended book I have ever read. Everyone in my shouting distance has heard that it is the most life changing book you will ever encounter. I have been through more unpleasant experiences in my life than most, but somehow tend to keep a very upbeat and positive atitude. I read this book just when I was going through one of the hardest ewxperiences of my life and somehow, it helped me maintain a positive attitude and realize that we are indeed in charge of our own destiny. I still have plenty to do until I accomplish all my goals, but keeping this book, by my bedside will certainly help me get there. Everyone around me now owns a copy, including my 2 daughters, ages 29 and 27.
Rating: Summary: Straightforward, No Nonsense! Review: "Life Strategies" is one of those rare finds, a self-help book that does not wallow in big words or esoteric concepts. Mr. McGraw outlines his steps for success in life in simple, direct, yet engagingly written chapters. The organization of the book is excellent throughout and reflects an author who has had extensive experience in dealing with people from all walks of life. He deals with concepts such as self-reliance, individual responsibility and similar notions often downplayed (or ignored outright) by other authors seeking to play into the culture of victimization. You will find none of that in Mr. McGraw's book; his main theme is that we are responsible for our own lives.Once you pick up the book, it is difficult to put down; you will find yourself nodding your head at what you have always known in your heart, but do not always acknowledge in your daily life.
Rating: Summary: Thought he was more interesting on Oprah! Review: I found the book to be not as interesting as I thought it would be since on Oprah he was always appealing and funny. I found that halfway thru the book, I got really bored and all the things he wants you to right down and review was bit to to much to get into. It wasn't a bad book but I wouldn't say it helped me with any life strategies either, I thought the book was just to much work and couldn't keep my interest peaked enough. I do however enjoy his talks on Oprah..
Rating: Summary: book review Review: Table of Contents: One- Get Real; Two- You Either Get It, or You Don't; Three- You Create Your Own Experience; Four- People Do What Works; Five- You Can't Change What You Don't Acknowledge; Six- Life Rewards Action; Seven- There Is No Reality; Only Perception; Eight- Life Is Managed; It Is Not Cured; Nine- We Teach People How To Treat Us; Ten- There Is Power In Forgiveness; Eleven- You Have To Name It To Claim It; Twelve- The Guided Tour of Your Life; Thirteen- The Seven-Step Strategy; Fourteen- Finding Your Formula. The titles of the chapters really give a good overview of what the book is about. The book takes goes through the different steps to reach a goal of success. He assigns "homework", like writing letters, making lists, or filling out questionnaires which help find the flaws that hold a person back. This book is worth buying because it works. It worked for me; I am only a senior in high school. It helped me improve my grades and my relationships with my peers and my teachers. This book can help you in any situation, whether it is trying to get along with your boss or trying to lose some weight for spring break, this book can help. Dr. McGraw's introduction is not the most exciting, but hang in there it gets a lot better!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Advice Review: Excellent book to read over and over again. Dr. McGraw uses real world examples and advice on how to shape up your life, achieve your goals and take responsibility for your actions. I was so tired of reading all the "touchy, feely, it's not your fault" self-help books....that it was refreshing to read one that actually gives you advice on how to get all you want out of your life. Stop ignoring problems....they don't go away by themselves.
