Rating: Summary: A strange author Review: I believe in the power of the mind in healing. That said, I fear people who are in real trouble and riddled with fear will read this book and not seek medical care. A healthy lifestyle and a positive attitude will have a very strong influence on your health and the outcome or course of any disease process. That said, until we are able to unlock the secrets of the brain that control self-healing, your doctor is your best bet. Hiding your head in the sand and shopping health food stores for "magic" potions is very dangerous. Not only can you miss an opportuinity for early intervention in a disease process, but you may poison yourself with "herbs", etc. from health food stores that are lethal in combination or inappropriate doses. In a few words----"Proceed With Caution" and don't believe everything you read---an M.D. behind someone's name does not guarantee good or accurate advice.
Rating: Summary: This Book was the answer to my prayers. Review: I have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and cervical cancer. I have been in and out of Doctor's offices for the past two years all to, what seemed to me, no avail. I have tried many different kinds of medications and needed something that would take me out of the chemical rut. "Eight Weeks to Optimum Health" was the answer to my prayers. This is a book that I could not put down I read the whole thing in two days. It is an addition to my library... I will recommend this book to anyone who will listen, but this book will never leave my Library (I'll need it to refer back to) Thank you very much Dr. Weil you are a God send!!!
Rating: Summary: This book is a life changing experience for all ages. Review: Eight Weeks to Optimum Health is a book anyone can read and benefit from. The program is outlined in detail and is very easy to follow. It is unlike other self-help books in that it gives the reader a "map" to follow and does not leave the reader hanging. The emphasis placed on just trying to make oneself happy is a guaranteed way to improve health and boost spirits. My grandmother has suffered from severe knee pain for more than ten years. After completing Weil's eight-week program, her knee pain has disappeared! She claims that she has never felt better. I have no physical ailments, but now I feel a greater sense of well being and happiness. After reading this book, I feel that I can take a deep breath and face the world with a true feeling of peace and confidence. Reading Andrew Weil's book is certainly a life changing experience that can help readers of all ages.
Rating: Summary: Excellent guide on ways to take control of personal health. Review: This is an excellent guide to illustrate to the masses that we are in control of personal well-being and not the medical establishment. The medical establishment has survived and profited from people's naive outlook regarding what is "good" for our health. The time has come where the laisezz-faire attitude of 'Just fix it' does not guarantee feasible and immediate results. We have found that the professionals don't always have the answers and that it is our own responsibility to maintain and use preventative techniques mitigate the onset of serious problems. This book helps illustrate active ways in which we can each take control over aspects of our well-being and in turn implement preventative/maintenance methods which facilitates all aspects of health.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book! Review: Most people see the extremely dramatic health improvements from the truly sick as the important part of this book. Myself, I think the small improvements for average people are the thing! I have lowered my blood pressure, raised my energy level, and lost 20 pounds in 4 months, and my arthritis is almost gone!
Rating: Summary: Excellent advice that's easy to incorporate into your life Review: This book made a big difference in my approach to living well. The author's emphasis is on making little changes that (hopefully) will have a dramatic impact. He also uses everyday language so that anyone can understand the medical information. His touchy feely stories are a bit much but it doesn't detract from the main premise.d
Rating: Summary: Best health advice I've ever read, but not easy. Review: Since I started the "8 Week" program a few months ago, I have lost 20 lbs, reduced my blood pressure medicine by 50%, feel better mentally, increased my stamina, reduced my arthritis pain, etc. His advice is surely no magic pill, but nothing that lasts is. Anyone under the care of a doctor should discuss these strategies with their doctor first. Dr. Weil isn't perfect, but he is the most intelligent and well read proponent of alternative health I've read.
Rating: Summary: Be very careful if you use this book . . . Review: After being on the program for over eight weeks, I honestly feel no better than I did before. Part of that could be because I already had healthy eating habits. The advice to take yoga is good. There are some things that are questionable. Valerian is recommended to help sleep but my research shows that it should not be taken by anyone on antidepressents. There are other CONCERNS about certain herbs and "tonics" and their interaction with other prescription medicines or allergies. My advice would be to run this by your family doctor before embarking on the program if you are taking prescription medications. If not, watch for allergic reactions. The book has many good points but needs to be used with caution.
Rating: Summary: a great book for healthy living Review: Dr.Weil's book takes into account the whole person
-constituted of physical,spiritual and psychological
elements - when it deals with the healthy living.
I myself have put into practice some of his insights
and I found that it really works... This book is
a great contribution to holistic health.
The book is interesting , useful, and very practical.
Rating: Summary: Finally, a life-style health program I can live with Review: For years I have been searching for a life-styles health program that attends to mind, body and spirit AND does not preach to me about the evils of this that or the other thing. Dr. Weil realizes that we all have cravings and weaknesses, such as caffeine or chocolate, and helps us to work with them instead of denying them. I am on week 6 and while I have trouble doing everything - I am a student and cannot really afford organic vegetables in the Mid-West, I find the walking, breathing and vitamins to have made a major change in my life. I am sleeping better than ever, suffering almost no depression and people find me downright perky 95% of the time. Yippee
