Summary: I acutally enjoyed this book!
Review: It could be becuase I know how different books and movies can be that I wasn't expecting it to be just like TV. For whatever reason, I enjoyed this book. No, it's not great literature, but it is fun and fast-paced. You don't have to live some place like New York to enjoy it.

Also recommended: The Da Vinci Code, Bark of the Dogwood, Pompeii

Summary: No.. Its not the HBO version .. BUT its a worthwhile read
Review: A bit depressing.. but more realistic. When I watch the HBO show I want to fly off to New York and live in the the glamorous circle of Carrie and friends. When I read the book I got more inside on just how plain nasty alot of the people are in Manhatran with their society, careers, etc. I think I will stay on the West Coast thank.you.very.much. I really enjoyed Bushnell's writing and although it is doubtful that you feel connected with any of the characters the stories are a fascinating social critique.

Summary: Disapointing
Review: Well I recently got hooked on the show and thought the book would be good. Its okay, kinda interesting to see where some of the stories for the show came from, but hard to read, poorly written and really hard to get into. Sorry Candace but I don't see how you made a living being a writer. I'm glad you don't write for the HBO show.

Summary: Don't Read This!
Review: I bought this expecting something like the series on HBO, it even had Sarah Jessica Parker on the front. It was something that I didnt enjoy, it was all dark drug use, nothing like the series. Dont read this book!!! Donate the money to charity- it would be better spent.

Summary: Sex and the City
Review: A very disappointing book. You would expect from the title that this book would reflect the HBO series. No where close to the same.

Summary: Different and brilliant
Review: Funny enough, everyone of reviewers seem to be more or less right about this book, one star or five stars!

Chekhov was first to observe that suicide rates for surgeons are too high among other professions. Dissecting life brings melancholy, and that seems to be anyone's problem with this book.

The book is disturbingly piercing. Candace's feminine eye for details mixes with heavy doses of masculine coolness. Candace makes no mistake about what she depicts: a mad race for egotistic fulfillment where men and women have been made equal.

I'm not an avid reader of contemprorary urbane prose. The modern narrative form is probably worn out beyond repair. But my hat is off for Candace! If you guys want a caleidoscope of '90-ies NYC upper crust larger that life - this book is for you. If you just care for a prime commercial item - you find nothing better than the TV.

Summary: Columnist not novelist
Review: Articles made short & sweet (or sour), quirky interest every week written by a columnist for the New York Observer. These in turn were collected & became a book sold in the women's cultural study, non-fiction section of the bookstore. One can see where the characters for the TV show were created but Sex & the City is not a novel, no thought out flowing plot, only the weekly articles Bushnell created for the amusement of New Yorkers about the how the other half lives. It's not that raunchy, not that pretty, it's pretty sad actually (for the people she writes about). The style is that of a columnist not a novelist, so don't expect the TV show only the basic elements for the show lie hidden within...

Summary: TV was actually better than the book
Review: Over 1/2 way through this book you still don't know the name of the narrator. This was quite possibly the worst read ever. I can always find a redeeming quality in every book, but this was the first time that I couldn't. I couldn't even gather up the strength to finish this. It's amazing that HBO saw something good enough in this book to create such an amazing series! This is the first time that I have ever found TV, or the movie, to be better than the book. Unless you want to read vague and boring conversation about the rules of threesomes (yes, vague and boring: it wouldn't even turn on a nymphomaniac) DO NOT BUY, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME READING!!!!

Summary: not what i expected
Review: I found trading up by the same author very interesting. I was interested in what inspired the sucessful television series of the same name. This book was a little dissapointing. The book has a very depressing beginning. The reader is shown that a relationship in New York is relatively impossible. It doesnt get any better from there. There are a few highlights were the author writes about her trials in (swingers clubs) but other than that the book lacks any interesting moments. All of the charachters in Bushnells book are depressed and superficial, but she states that they wouldnt be any better off in a relationship (she shows how unhappy married couples are). This book is also full of dating advice about what supposedly men and women think but I found nothing engaging in what she said. I think this book would have been more interesting if she named the actual people she was referring too instead of disguising their names. I didnt feel any strong charachterizations in the names other than they were rich and indulgent and unhappily single. Life is not that hard.

Summary: Not at all like the show
Review: What a bummer this novel turned out to be! I felt as though I was being strung along only to find there to be no purpose. Absolutely none of the stories had any kind of ending whatsoever, even if there was no solution. The book is divided and subdivided into little stories that make absolutely no sense other than to somewhat sound dismal about relationships in general. I really did not get the point of the book in any way shape or form. It wasn't even free flow writing. I really would not know how to describe this to others. The only thing I can express is to wait until you can check it out at your local library. I really don't know how they made such a fabulous show out of such a nonsense book.
