Rating: Summary: If you buy this book, I also have a bridge for sale. Review: This book is nothing else than an extended infomercial, (usually broadcast in the wee hours for insomniacs) for Dr. Perricone's skin care products that can be purchased at exorbitant cost on his web site, mentioned as one of the "sources" for the potions listed in the book. Also mentioned as "sources" (i.e.: sponsors) are Saks Fifth Avenue, NeimannMarcus and Sephora, that just might have expressed their gratitude for their inclusion here in a tangible way . If you must see this book, I suggest that you borrow it from you local library. Factual information, that is easily available elsewhere such as Medline, etc., fills exacly one page of notes. Dr. Perricone deserves another doctoral degree for verbosity for this slender book, which is grossly repetitious and heavily padded "case histories" of success stories of patients who have used his products and followed his advice. The fact that Dr. Perricone is allowed to peddle his wares on PBS channels boggles my mind.

Rating: Summary: An experienced piece of advice - save your money Review: I not only purchased the book, but all of his facial products and nutritional supplements. I also purchased his second book, which gives more info on nutrition and followed that as well - I was fully committed to seeing if this program would work and objectively watched to see what would happen. I followed it for 60 days and I told no one, not even my husband, what I was doing (he's seen me try various diets before and thought nothing of it). I'll admit my skin felt somewhat better, and slightly improved - but this was due to the change in the amount of water I was drinking and the change in my diet. Dr. Perricone is correct in this regard, and if I strayed and loaded up on fat and sugar, for instance, even for a day or two, my skin reflected the change. However, the expensive treatments and supplements did nothing for me. I still have my wrinkles; some days they are less noticeable and some days they are more noticeable. My skin tone is the same and has not become procelain. I did not receive any raving compliments about how my skin glowed, nor did anyone approach me to ask me what I had done to myself (not even my best friend noticed anything different and when I finally told her what I was doing, she told me I was an idiot for spending all that money on my face when I could have spent it on clothes)(she was kidding, of course). I believe, if it happens, a glow in your cheek, or a twinkle in your eye comes from the decision to do something special for yourself. In that regard, you can start with eating better, drinking a lot of water, and pursuing a much less expensive means of taking care of your skin.
Rating: Summary: The Truth is Self Evident..All You Have To Do Is Believe It Review: I bought this book after seeing Dr. Perricone on WHYY the educational channel. I had read Back to Eden by Jethro Kloss and was impressed with the drawings showing the skin differences between one who had a drinking to excess problem, and the same person after getting his excess under control. I have a dietetic program that I utilize that is based on non stimulating food. I notice a definite improvement in my skin when I follow it. So I was sold on the book before I read it. I learned some interesting new things in reading it. For example the effect coffee has on your complexion, and equally as important the effect it has on your weight. I still drink coffee on and off, but actually have come to prefer Green Tea instead. I must admit that I disagree with the Dr. when he prescribes some shellfish as part of his program, considering that the risk of eating a bad piece of shellfish, which results in Hepatitis, which has a 50% mortality rate. I had an acquaintance who was the unlucky one to get the bad clam, and I don't wish to recant his experience. My suggestion is to buy the book. Get absorbed in the idea that a diet that is rich in the abundance of the earth, will have a remarkable effect on your appearance, and overall health. Notice the condition of your skin before embarking on the program, then check it under the same lights, and mirror after a week or two. The reality is that after doing it for extended periods of time, new cells glow brightly. You will think that you are reversing time. Considering that we become new people every couple of years, due to cell reproduction, it is easy to understand that if you create an ideal clean, and abundantly healthy environment you will see new cells that are remarkably youthful. Then environment includes air pollutants (second hand smoke) as well as those found in drinking water, and the most importantly the food we eat. I strongly reccomend this book. It is technical in it's approach, but not offensibly so. I also suggest that reading two other books, will open your way of thinking about health, and healing. Those are The Okinawa Program, and Back to Eden by Jethro Kloss. I could talk for hours about that, but it would not be relevant to the review. My suggestion, buy Dr Perricone's book, follow the diet, see the remarkable results, then decide if you would like to follow the rest of the program for any specific cosmetic condition you may have. It's an excellent read. Well deserved 5 stars, and 10 stars because it is helping so many to live healthier, happier lives.
Rating: Summary: Listen to the Doctor . . . Review: Perricone's advise is not as complicated as it seems when laid out in an a more concise fashion which you can see on his web site. He prescribes a high content of the Omega-3 fish oils that are found in fish like salmon--the wilder the better, fruits containing vitamin A and C like fresh berries and plenty of green vegetables in lieu of starchy carbohydrates like the usual high-carb suspects on the dietary hit-list--potatoes, bread and rice. All of this makes perfect sense and all has been commented on before by thousands of health experts and diet gurus for the last ten years, but never strung together with scientific data to back up its basic premise----following the plan as simplistically as possible---eating a portion of salmon (the size of your palm), fresh fruit, lentils and green vegetables with olive oil sans butter will lavish your skin with all the things it needs to simply glow with good health. Think of it as fertilizing your garden with the nutriments it needs and having it grows large and pretty flowers.
In addition to eating well, Perricone explains and recommends the type of supplements your skin needs to blossom with the same simplicity a garden expert is going to recommend the soil content necessary to ensure a proper yield of flowers or fruit. The four Perricone particularly touts are: Vitamin C, Alpha Lipoic Acid, DMAE and Vitamin E---these in addition to the fish oil attained by eating wild salmon. Two of the popular vitamin manufacturers now package Vitamin C, Alpha Lipoic Acid and DMAE in one capsule taken once or twice a day, making taking the supplements as easy as you could wish.
As for the Perricone products--they really are great. I have tried the eye solutions, the lifts, the finishing cream, the cleanser, and the lip plumper. The only complaint I have is with the lip plumper---this seemed to dry my lips rather than smooth them out---if you are reading, Dr. Perricone, help me out here. I would like to try one of the night time creams, but quite frankly, the $120 price tag puts me off :-) The web site explains quickly what products you need for your basic skin type.
I think Dr. Perricone's analytical approach gets results and makes sense. You would not feed your garden flowers a solution of toxic waste simply because you were too lazy---and still expect a healthy yield. So why expect the opposite for your skin? If you feed it junk--its going to look like junk.
I have subtracted a star because at times the good doctor seems to be merely touting his products rather than the method--although he tells you what ingredients to look for on the labels--unfortunately not many companies make what he is prescribing. My experience with following his plan has been a good one---many people have asked me what I do to maintain such nice skin. What more can I ask?
Rating: Summary: Great Advice - Cheaper Alternatives Review: I found the book very insightful and interesting to read. However, the Dr. Perricone's products are quite expensive. Another reviewer tipped me off to a product offered by Reviva as an alternative (Reviva Alp. Lip with DMAE and C). Found it at the Vitamin Shoppe .... I'm going to give it a try. Hopefully a little bit of research will help to make these products within reach for most people.
Rating: Summary: As crude as it may sound Review: I'm giving this book four stars for a couple of reasons. The first being that I don't dole out A's unless something is outstanding. The second...well that's the main reason. Anyway, this book is the most worthwhile purchase I have made in a very long time. I spent a good year running to tanning beds every other day while in my late 20's, and now in my early 30's I have begun to have some real problems with sagging skin that responds only moderately to topical treatments. The recommendations in Perricone's book have completely altered my standard of living. I will start with the dietary guidelines. The anti-inflammatory pro-antioxidant diet that he recommends has made a difference in so many ways. The first being that the bagginess and puffiness in my facial skin, is gone; secondly, my skin feels more moist and "perky", and third, as crude as it may sound, the diet has cured my years-long battle with constipation. Anyone who has had this nightmare will completely appreciate the effects of this diet. I have also begun to lose weight, which has also been an issue as I am getting to the point in my life where my body is changing and my metabolism is not that of a 22 year old. Perricone unabashedly promotes his products. Thanks to capitalism and competition, there are many reputable companies that produce similar products for less than half the price. Although I am still hard pressed to find a DMAE lip plumper. Check with Reviva labs' website if you are on a strict financial diet as I am. His constant recommendation of his products throughout the book is akin to looking at a beautiful man and admiring him, then suddenly he farts. It sours the information and instead of having the promotion interwoven throughout his text, putting paragraphs at the end of the chapters that list the recommended products might have been less, "intrusive". I have not purchased any of Perricone's products yet I am seeing results - fast. Here are my suggestions to anyone who purchases the book: follow the diet, buy some alpha lipoic acid and take it daily, and definitley find a good antioxidant supplement. There are many, many, many ways to follow the principles outlined in this book without breaking the bank or sticking with brand names. I'm very happy with the information I have gleaned from this read - and I would very much appreciate it if my Mom and Dad would finish reading the book so I can have it back :)
Rating: Summary: Unbelievable! Review: Unbelievable that a board certified dermatologist would push this unproven junk. If you want to have better looking skin, use an Parasol 1789 or micronized titanium sunblock, and the prescription retinoids, there are five year clinical trials that show they work.
Rating: Summary: Your name has to be "Zha Zha" to afford this diet. Review: This book has some good ideas, but you would have to be Zha Zha Gabor to dedicate the money and time necessary to put all the principles into action. I went shopping for the first 3 day diet. And that cost me $75 dollars. That's just for 3 days of the diet. I purchased 1 month of the recommended supplements, that came out to almost $200. I had scoured the internet to get the cheapest prices. That's just for 1 month. And the time that you have to spend preparing the food (cooking the salmon etc.) is incredible. You can spend all your time and money just trying to ward off wrinkles. You have to weigh your priorities. I did feel better after being on the diet. But the supplements are just way overkill. My stomach couldn't even handle all of the supplements. My recommendation would be to stick with the diet, but avoid the supplements or scale them down some how. I came to the conclusion that it was just taking too much time to cook the food, and too much money. Unless you are Bill Gates and have a personal chef that follows you around, I cannot recommend the book.
Rating: Summary: Perfect!!! Review: Finally a book that tells me specifically what cosmetics, beauty products, foods are good for my skin and which ones aren't. I loved it.... but think about it...its your skin. Rather pay these amounts than a few thousands for a face lift in the future.
