Rating: Summary: So good! Review: Reading this book has made me more hopeful that I'll lick social anxiety than anything I've ever read before. I feel very close to Dr. Dayhoff and know that if she can make it, I can too. I haven't felt like this before and it's wonderful.
Rating: Summary: Great for work stress Review: A recent survey says 61% of people believe work stress is the main cause of mental illness. I don't know about other mental illnesses, but I sure know that work stress sends my social anxiety off the charts. You're being judged all the time and your job is on the line so you're always keyed up even before you add in your problem with social anxiety. This is one reason I'm happy I found this book. It talks about what people with social anxiety need to know about work and jobs and shows us how to cope better with the stress and get what we want while we work on our social fears.
Rating: Summary: Reduces embarrassment Review: Eating and drinking in front of others is torture for me so I avoid it whenever possible. It started in high school. I had gotten up the courage to go with some classmates to McDonalds. A girl I was trying to impress was there too. I was drinking when someone made a joke. As I started to laugh, my Coke came spraying out of my nose all over her burger and fries. It humiliated me and totally ruined my social life. Surprisingly Diagonally Parked talks about this fear and has some neat suggestions for working on it. One of them is sort of fun where I try my best to embarrass myself in a restaurant. The more I work on it the easier things are getting thanks to this book.
Rating: Summary: Increases self-confidence Review: In addition to my fear the biggest problem I have in social situations is my lack of confidence. I always seem to do things wrong and feel like a fool. Well, that was how I felt BEFORE I started to read this book. No matter what topic the book is talking about it shows you how to gain confidence in yourself. You may be learning the ins and outs of effective job hunting but at the same time you're building confidence in yourself to do it. A little bit at a time piling up your small successes you begin to feel you really can accomplish things. It spurs you on and makes the next step easier. This book is definitely a winner.
Rating: Summary: Two big thumbs up! Review: While this fine book illuminates the experience of social anxiety, self-criticism, and self-defeating behaviors, it also highlights the underlying need for raising self-esteem and gaining mastery. Unlike other social anxiety books, Diagonally-Parked clearly demonstrates how low self-esteem and low self-confidence eat away at the foundation of recovery attempts. Feeling good about ourselves, that we have value, and that we can influence the world and achieve what we want makes all the difference in what we can accomplish.I love how the doctor redefines social anxiety in this vein, saying: "Always remember, your social anxiety is merely a dysfunctional over-expression of your sensitivity, empathy, and imagination. These are 'special gifts' to be valued, cultured, and nurtured."
Rating: Summary: Big achievement Review: It means everything to me to learn that I'm not the only one who feels like this. Millions of others do too and this feeling has a name - social phobia. While professionals are learning how to treat SP, I am learning as well with the help of this important and exceptionally useful book.
Rating: Summary: A social anxiety milestone Review: Fascinating, authoritative, warm, and supportive. What more could you ask of a book on such an important topic.
Rating: Summary: Wisdom Review: Dr. Dayhoff does a thorough and thoughtful job covering both the research literature and what matters most to social anxiety disorder sufferers. There is great wisdom in this book. It's a valuable resource for those with SAD, practitioners, and the inquiring public.
Rating: Summary: Praiseworthy Review: No one knows the loneliness and torture SAD sufferers really go through everyday, day in and day out, unless they have been there. Dr. Dayhoff has been there, understands, and is telling the world about it loud and clear. This book is a banner raised on high. Thank you, Dr. Dayhoff.
Rating: Summary: Great self-help aid Review: Finding therapists who understand SAD is almost impossible and when you find them, they are booked for a year. That is the reason why this book is so valuable. You can achieve on your own many things you would achieve in therapy with it. Thank goodness for this book. I really do not know what I would do without it.
