Summary: Very insightful book
Review: Dr. Phil really gets his readers to think hard about where they're coming from. This book helps you to get at the stuff from your past you're still carrying around with you that's like a brick-loaded backpack. This book helped me to recognize an issue I had so long since buried, I was in complete denial that it was still bothering me ten years later! But, wow, it was powerful to acknowledge it, face it, deal with it properly, and then finally forgive the person who hurt me. I rate this book with only four stars because I feel that, although understanding your past and how you have become who you are is essential to living authentically, that is only half the battle. His plans of action are not truly helpful if you want to overcome your fears and the hurdles that get in the way of living true to yourself. You need so much more than this book can offer, but to heal your past, read this book and hire a good therapist, if you can find one. (Maybe even one who is cool with Dr. Phil and not opposed to him as so many therapists tend to be.)

Summary: Interesting Approach to Life Choices
Review: This book has an interesting approach.

The basic idea is that people get caught up in an unhappy rut and are unable or unwilling to pull themselves out of this situation or never take the time to take stock and have a realistic view of themselves, and their life, their goals, and where they are going. That is, one asks the questions such as - am I doing and acting in a way that the first priority items are being accomplished ? Or am I just being carried along by events and am content with that outcome? The book is broken into two general themes.

(1) The approach taken in the book is to first create a benchmark or make a comparison through a short question and answer session so that you can get an idea of what you like and do not like, where you have gone wrong in your life, not in general terms but specific things or issues. Are you on track? Are you doing what you had set out to do 5 or 10 years ago? Are you happy and fulfilled, or are you depressed and agitated and unhappy? Does your marriage need fixing? Should you change jobs, etc.?

(2) Then having that clearly identified and defined the problems that you must deal with, the second part of the book is to address how you are going to solve those problems. Along the way he provides positive mental reinforcement.

It is not necessary to take the "test" of part one and do everything that he suggests. But having said that this is a surprisingly good and thoughtful book. Everyone can learn something.

Recommend. Four stars.

Summary: i havent read the book
Review: I havent read this book but i can tell you right off the bat that it wont make you life right. The truth is, we need Jesus. We need Him to come into our lives and change us. We aren't going to make everything perfect in this lifetime. The world is an imperfect place, and so forever will our lives be here. So what are we chasing? Seriously, dont waste your life chasing an illusion of happiness, give your life to Jesus and let Him show you what this life is really about!

Summary: Gabby but Grounded
Review: The book does, indeed, "sound" exactly the way that Dr. Phil talks. It's gabby and long-winded in places.

However...

It has proven for me to be an excellent way of digging myself out of life where I felt stuck. I owe McGraw a big thank you. I'm now undertaking my greatest dream with gusto, and yes some trepidation and fear, but also with a better understanding of how to leverage my natural strengths (and turning some "bad" habits into things that work for me).

Give it a shot. The worst that will happen is that you'll learn something new about yourself.

Summary: Self Matters
Review: One of the best-selling self-help books of all time. Phil lays it all out in a no-nonsense manner. Be ready when you pick this up, because you are asked to change your life--for the better.

Summary: How to know yourself and make the most of your life
Review: I admire Dr. Phil and enjoyed this book, particularly the exercises. I certainly gained insight and understanding into why I do the things I do. Dr. Phil tells us about his own life and how he made mistakes so that you know he is as human as the rest of us. I read another book recently which I recommend you read with Self Matters called Optimal Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self. Optimal Thinking is a practical no-nonsense book which showed me how to be my best, bring out the best in other people and make the most of whatever comes my way (whether they be a rainy day, distressing feelings, malicious people or financial challenges etc.) Make sure you get a copy of each of these books.

Summary: The funniest American comedian! :D
Review: I never get serious reading his book or seeing his show on tv. This guy is nothing but 'pure hype'. You don't need to get a Phd in Psychology to do his job. His show should be in Comedy Central though.

Summary: Good
Review: Got me thinking. Isn't that what you want? I like it and use it in my daily life.

Summary: In your face motivator
Review: This book is quite insightful but first and foremost a great "in your face" motivator! Dr. Phil's writing style is very compelling and many of the excercises he introduces in this book are very useful. This is an excellent practical tool for finding yourself. It tells you exactly what to do and when to do it. If you are interesting in what to do but not too interested in how it works, this is a great book! If you are actually interested in how it works, the theory behind it, read "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. Though Sato's book is not an in your face motivator, it is extremely insightful and interesting. It explains how our we have become the person we are and where we are headed and what we can do to facilitate the process. Both books are super good for different reasons!

Summary: NEVER GETS TO THE POINT
Review: Monumentally disappointing, Self Matters by Phillip C. McGraw never really gets started. Dr. Phil asks the usual questions: do you feel like...have you ever thought...do you want to...? Sure you do. Well in a minute I will give you all the answers. Interestingly, and like a lot of similar books, the answers never come. That's because each of us is so individual and so complex that books such as this can't deliver like they attempt. Skip this one.
