Rating: Summary: An Ode to Life Review: Anna Quindlen's book reads like a poem. It is fluid and sweet and beautiful to look at. You can read it aloud, and over and over, carry it everywhere, and dream between pages of people and places that you love and have loved. It is a little Ode to Life, reminding us of the beauty that surrounds us and inviting us to learn to appreciate it, celebrate it, and share it, in each moment of now. There is another book dealing with the theme of "living in the moment" that has touched me very much called Working on Yourself Doesn't Work by Ariel and Shya Kane. If you are interested in learning, as Ms. Quindlen says, "to love the journey, not the destination" check out the Kane's book also. It has introduced me to the concept of living in the moment, and it may have some keys for you too.
Rating: Summary: Life is short. Be Happy! Review: A beautifully simple book; the photos and the text combine in a statement of faith and spiritual strength which readers will find very heartening. Quindlen's resume (p.15) is written in such a way as to invite readers to pen their own in like manner. If this one simple act is what you take away from reading this book, you'll be off to a good start in the profound work of "crafting a spirit" Quindlen so deftly describes.
Rating: Summary: Brief Reminder Review: A sweet book about things to remember to make your life special. It's a reminder about life being a series of moments that should be valued and appreciated.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful... Review: This book was refreshing... just the gift to give to each of my daughters, to share what is important in life. I was shocked by those who gave harsh reviews, but I realize that these are the folks who need this book the most. Unfortunately, a hard shell often prevents absorbtion of quality material. Go Anna! If you only influence a handful of folks to choose the optimistic, kind, caring, thankful route in life you have succeeded in doing something beautiful! Almost everyone at the library where I work has purchased a copy for their daughter(s).
Rating: Summary: Stick to Your Novels, Anna Review: I love Anna Quindlen's prose and think most everything she writes is great. And, then I came across this "little gem." Not up to your standards, Anna. This trite and sentimental bookette was a disappointment. Purchasing this book will make me shy in the future about buying books sight-unseen and online from authors I admire, but who have to create something for the holiday market. At least the price dropped since I purchased it. This is a great gift for the office--as long as no one knows it's from you. Hoping that this was intended as a joke for folks like me who too often pick a book by only looking at its cover and/or author.
Rating: Summary: Fire up the fireplace Review: This was one of those books you settle down with while sipping a cup of tea. It's an uplifting reminder of what matters most, or should. If you have only a few minutes to spare, this is a great little essay to fill that time. Nothing new, no revolutionary insights, but that's part of its beauty. It's simple, plain, heartfelt, and warm. Light up the fireplace and enjoy Quindlen's comforting words.
Rating: Summary: A Little Gem Review: I loved Anna Quindlen's book. Her words are so simple yet so life enriching. The accompanying photos complimented the inspiring words of how wonderful life is. I took the recommendation of another reviewer and checked out a book by Ariel and Shya Kane called 'Working On Yourself Doesn't Work." I found this book to be a simple yet powerful guide to living in the moment where life becomes satisfying and meaningful.
Rating: Summary: damaging mush Review: This should have been entitled "The things people say to comfort you."..... you know, the types who grasp your hand with a brimming sense of their wisdom as you bury your child and say "it will all look better in the morning" and "god knows best" and such. A horrible book to put out there for some unsuspecting soul who might really need a glimpse of a happy life. Apparently this was originally a graduation speech: let's hope those seniors found something more than mush thereafter.
Rating: Summary: A good column not a good book Review: I ordered this book from Amazon and felt ripped off when I read it. It was like reading a hallmark card. It would have been a great column. Also, the photographs which were great, had no real credits. You could not identify when they were taken or by whom. This was such a disappointment from Quinlan.
Rating: Summary: Those who don't love this book, don't love life. Review: I bought this book in the airport on the way to my beloved brothers funeral. It gave me new hope! Life does go on and it can go on happily.
