Rating: Summary: Back to Basics Review: The Zone continues to work for me. I'd given up on diets. This was exactly what I'd been looking for. After completing nursing courses in chemistry, physiology and especially nutrition The Zone made complete sense. I simply lower my carbohydrated intake and noticed a dramatic difference. I lost 14 pounds in one month. I took it more seriously and I'm down 30+ pounds and 3 dress sizes in 3 months. I don't have the sugar cravings, nor do I get hungry like before. When I think back to my weight gain, it all started when the high carb/low fat diet was the only way to eat. Well, my husband and I can attest to the fact that when I began to eat high carb/low fat I gain a lot of weight. I'm really eating like I did growing up, meat(poultry, beef, pork), fish and vegetables. I didn't grow up eating pasta or a lot of bread. Occasionally, we ate rice or potatoes with dinner and only bread for lunch (sandwiches). The only major change would be eating my fruit versus drinking fruit juice. The Zone is a way of life for me.
Rating: Summary: Ignore the critics and give it a try. Review: My wife is an Anesthesiologist. When she brought home a copy of The Zone, it was with the comment "this is the first thing I've ever read about diet that matches what I learned in biochem about how the body works."We tried it. I lost 30 pounds, and my cholesterol dropped by 100 points. I've read a lot of critics about the book, and I'm frankly mystified. Have any of them really read it? I hope you try it.
Rating: Summary: This diet is great! Review: I cannot believe the "medical experts" or whatever they call themselves giving this book a rating of 1. Have they tried it themselves? Probably not. The reason these people are giving this book a low rating and the diet such poor reviews is because it is politically incorrect to go against the medical/scientific community as Dr. Sears has and tell the American people that these super low fat/high carb diets do not work. We are a fatter nation than ever before because of these low fat diets and doctors don't know why! Why? Because we need to follow the Zone, Protein Power, or Atkins diet - that's why! I wish people would get out of their brainwashed modes and at least try it before knocking it.
Rating: Summary: This book is amazing! I'm telling everyone I know about it. Review: This is the first "diet" I've been on where I'm not obsessed with food. I eat amazing amounts of food and feel full and satisfied. My sugar cravings are gone, my energy level is up and a great side benefit is I've lost 15 pounds in three months. I've told everyone I know about this book and my friends that have started it have had similar results. I've tried for years to lose weight and nothing has been successful. This is a program that I can follow the rest of my life. I love to cook and I can still have all my favorites, including dessert, I just have to remeber to eat the right combo. Most diets rely on temporary fixes to lose weight and the minute people go off them the weight comes right back. For women who suffer from yeast infections, I've had one interesting side effect from this diet. I get them less frequently and not as severely. Having less carbos converting to sugar has been great for me. Try it.
Rating: Summary: It frightens me that this book is a best seller Review: I am a physiologist from Seattle, WA and the "zone" that this book is referring to is called Ketosis which is when your body isn't getting enough carbohydrates -- it is commonly seen among women with anorexia. It scares me that this book is a bestseller and that people who don't know better are going to follow this advice. Please check with your doctor or your local library for more information about Ketosis -- it is a very dangerous thing to do to your body. The "zone" is a sickness - not a way to become healthier. If you want to lose weight - exercise and improve your diet.
Rating: Summary: All you have to lose is weight. Review: I found this book no more or less interesting or insightful than the other zillions of diet books I've read or the dozens of similar plans currently being hawked on infomercials. I am always skeptical about how well these types of plans work but I don't think I have much to lose trying it out. I figure it's worth the $25 I would have otherwise spent on a hi-fat meal.
Rating: Summary: Sounds great - what about kids? Review: My husband and I want to try this, but we have two kids who are in great health with only the necessary body fat....Will this just be a healthy way of eating for them, or will they lose weight, too? I don't want to cook two meals.
Rating: Summary: A good book to read. Review: This book follows the same diet guidlines that my diabetic dietician suggested. It goes into what it means to stay balanced and feel good. I have been on a similar diet for quite some time and feel that the results are fabulous. My sugar stays close to normal, I am much smaller, and I feel great.
Rating: Summary: A refreshing way to look at health and eating! Review: I note with amusement the naysayers need of "controls". If I try an asprin and it works, I'll use it again. If I try a new eating regimen and it makes a difference, I'll stick with it. Controls are necessary for some things, like proving that some action will result in a marginal improvement. When it comes to my health and how I feel, I don't care how it affects 2000 other people whose physiology may or may not be similar to mine. I had serious eating problems for decades that involved headaches, that wiped out feeling and various other aches and distractions. Over the years it also began to transform into an inability to digest many foods, most notably meats. A friend told me of a doctor who recommended the Zone diet for his wife with gratifying results. Trying the Zone diet for myself was like flipping a switch! After the first evening meal on the Zone, I was able for the first time in months to sleep without taking an antiacid! I've been on the Zone diet for almost a year and I can say without question that I cannot go back to eating a "healthy diet" as espoused by the American Medical Association and the rest of our fat aware society. One last thing, I'm a retired research scientist who knows all about sampling and controls. It will take you less than a week to see if this diet will make a difference for you; don't let the odd-balls with the number 1 ratings dissuade you from what might be a dramatic improvement in your well being.
Rating: Summary: Great for Hypoglycemia Review: I tend toward hypoglycemia, and am naturally addicted to sugars and "hi-density" carbs. I am thin, but am worried about developing diabetes as I age. I was skeptical about the Zone diet, since it cut out or way down on my favorite foods ... but after just one meal, I felt balanced and had NO CRAVINGS for sweets! Without any prompting from me, my husband had the same reaction after his first Zone meal. We're convinced! I agree that Dr. Sears "proof" and supporting statistics sound overblown, and the book reads like pure unadulterated hype. But the program works!
