Rating: Summary: my story Review: This was my first diet book and I will never buy another one again. The reason why this diet works is because it starves you. It did work for me but I was hungry almost all the time. I got down to my goal weight but I was not healthy. Remember that just because you are thin, you are not healthy. So, if it works for you and your doctor says you are healthy, more power to you. If you do purchase this book be careful and please pay attention to your body and your doctor. I would not go into this diet without some help from a dietician or doctor that you trust.
Rating: Summary: Too technical, but I feel great! Review: Dr. Sears lost me...lots of times, but once I figued out what I needed to do to get in "the zone", I've been there ever since...almost. I have never felt more energetic, and I have lost 12 pounds in about 45 days without trying.
Rating: Summary: Finally, a diet-plan based on research! Review: Ever since taking an endocrinology course at med school, I have been interested in controlling hormone levels. I used to FIGHT to maintain <19% bodyfat thanks to all the carbs I ate. The ZONE certainly makes that goal easier to maintain. Better yet, the ZONE is based on current research. Although research can occasionally be proven false by new research, at least this book is based on more than "opinions" as to what we should eat! (The 4 stars: due to the fact that the ZONE is quite time-consuming to follow when my fiance wants different meals than I am eating on the ZONE.)
Rating: Summary: Tested results Review: I am a doctor, part of a team in Vancouver, Canada, that have been testing nutritional diets for the past 13 years. Our team of 5 have tested almost every type of diet around and we found that the ones with the higher protein/lower carb type were far supeior and had far better results. The Zone came right up near the top of the best diets. The top 3 diets were all the same type. I have been recommending The Zone to my patients for the last 2 years and only 4% didn't have positive results, and this was only caused either by, a medical condition or improper use of the diet. If you need any questions answered, I will be happy to do so.
Rating: Summary: It works. Review: First of all-it doesn't appear that the nay-sayers have any idea what they are talking about. The experience of Jeffrey@vallnet is exactly what I've experienced and exactly what my doctor told me. He was initially concerned about the amount of protein but when we did a urine analysis and a battery of blood test--everything was normal. In addition-my cholesterol has radically improved to about 180, I've lost 20 pounds, and I'm feeling better than ever. The Zone is not a diet-it is a balanced approach to eating well and allowing the body to do what it is meant to do-keep itself a finely tuned engine. I never worry about the amount of calories I take in. I simply watch the ratio of protein to carbs and make sure I eat carbs with a lower glycemic index. Also helpful is the information about aerobic and anaerobic exercise. The worksheet for figuring out the protein intake is geared to allow for differences in the amount of exercise one does.
Rating: Summary: A truly disappointing book with negative health implications Review: Despite all of the literature in medical journals disavowing this type of high protein diet...Sears gives people what they want, not what is good for them. This diet provides an intial water loss which is so promising and then begins to have an effect on the liver. Readers should be wary of the scientific mumble-jumble, which is not supported by human research.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: Of all the things I have tried, this is the ONLY one that makes me feel good, gives me good energy, and doesn't make me hungry. When I told her I was eating this way, my doctor was concerned about the amount of protein ... when she did the AMA calculations, turns out it was EXACTLY the same as what the AMA recommends. Also, my before/after blood test results are phenomenal. I am 36, male, 5'6". Before the zone, I was in a "high-risk" category for heart disease based on my triglycerides and HDL/LDL ratio. After 3 months on the zone, ALL of my blood test results have returned to normal and I've moved into a "very low risk" category, AND my blood pressure has dropped into a very normal range. I checked my urine several times a day using Ketostix(r), and NEVER once have I registered anything other than in the undetectable range for ketone bodies in the urine. I have gained muscle mass just by changing the way I'm eating. My blood work was all done by LabCorp, the largest medical laboratory conglomerate in the states, and the test results have been duplicated numerous times so I know that they aren't a fluke. Say what you will - I'll stick with this; it's the ONLY way of eating that has made me OBJECTIVELY, **MEASURABLY** healthier.
Rating: Summary: I honestly believe discovering the ZONE has saved my life. Review: I have been the ZONE way of eating for 14 months now. When I started, I was taking 9mg of Glynase for my typeII diabetes. In less than 3 days I had to stop taking medication and haven't taken any since. My blood sugar level has droped from 150-200 (while on medication) to 80-90. If I stay off high glycimic carbs my blood sugar runs 70-80. I also have increase energy. My weight has leveled off to 180 lbs. I highly recommend Dr. Barry Sears books to anyone, especially to Type II diabetics. I am presently reading his newest book "The Anti-Aging ZONE"
Rating: Summary: Eat what grandma told you to! Review: Dr. Sears' book is a great, technical description of what happens to your body when you eat various food types. I have been in the Zone for 2 months, and in that time have lost 10 pounds. This is not a "high-protein" or a "radical" diet as some would say: rather, it is eating like your grandma told you, and getting great results! My blood pressure has lowered, I have more energy, and I'm actually in a better mood more often! For beginners, I recommend the Eades' book Protein Power, also available on Amazon.com. It is much less focused on biochemistry than Sears' book: but I do recommend that the two books be read somewhat in tandem.
Rating: Summary: This book is my Bible! Review: For anyone who wants to lose weight, gain energy, and say goodbye to chronic sickness, take it from me, the Zone works. Two years ago I was sick of being overweight and sick of suffering with chronic sinusitis. I read the Zone, followed the guidelines for Zone-friendly meals, and within two days I saw a significant difference in my energy levels. Within two weeks my clothes were fitting again. Now, two years later, I have lost 35 pounds without having gained back one ounce. And I didn't kill myself with exercise. My eating habits are completely changed and I pay attention to every meal without being obsessive about it. And, I haven't suffered with a sinus infection or any illness requiring medication since. As for the complexity of The Zone, I really wanted to lose the weight and get my energy back, so I made myself understand it. Even the technical stuff. But there's no reason why one couldn't skip the really complex stuff and still understand and apply Dr. Sears' method. It works and I tell everyone I know--if you are serious about getting healthy, read The Zone.
