Rating: Summary: PERFECT Review: The single MOST complete book on food counts there is on the market. No frills, just ALL there. Very Pleased !!!
Rating: Summary: A really great book Review: This book has been a huge help to me. I have been trying to lose a little weight for a while now but have always ruined myself by eating foods with more calories than I expected. But I recently heard about this book. It has been a priceless tool for me to keep track of my caloric intake and all of the other information that it gives.
Rating: Summary: A nice reference for dieters Review: This book is as complete as it can get, with numbers for cholesterol, calories, carbs, protein and fiber. While it lists the fat content, it does not list the saturated fat levels, which is the number low-fat/low-cholesterol dieters like me really need for watching what we eat. Other than that, in this book you'll find the numbers that are necessary for eating healthy. Actually, for the first few days, you'll find yourself skimming through it, saying, "My goodness, there's THAT MUCH FAT in (insert fast-food item or frozen, microwavable meal here)?!?" Also recommended is "Restaurant Confidential," compiled by the folks at the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
Rating: Summary: Not enough for carb watchers Review: This book is indeed very thick, but the numbers that are reported upon are not sufficient for people who are watching their carbohydrates. (this diet is described in "The Zone", by Dr. Sears). There are some food measurements (additonal columns) that really need to be included to make this book an effective tool for a reduced carbohydrate dieter. One thing would be to include the amount of monosaturated (good) fat in a product. Also, it would be much easier to read if the fractions of carb/fat/protien were represented graphically. As it is, you can look at a specific item and with some thought, figure out if it's ratio of carbs is very high to that of the other macronutrients, but it's a math problem that would be solved with a graphic. Another data column (that would be mostly blank due to lack of data) would be the glycemic index of a food. This measure, which tells how quickly the carbohydrates in the food enter the bloodstream, would also help low carb dieters avoid certain foods. Finally, this book is in alphabetical order by food name or by fast food restaurant, which is as good as any order. But really, it would be nice to sort this information in many ways, which a book can not do. No fault of this book, but one may find that this type of information may be easier to consume in a database format.
Rating: Summary: Not even close to "Complete" Review: This book is probably fine for those who have absolutely no health risks. But for those of us who need to know sugars as well as total carbs, saturated fat as well as total fat, and soluble/insoluble fiber, it's not there. It's also really heavy on convenience foods--which have more info on their labels than you'll find in this book. You're better off on the internet.
Rating: Summary: Everything you need to know is right there at your fingertip Review: This book is put together really well. I use it daily in my weightloss program and keep it near all the time. I even take it out with me to restaurants. A must is you are counting carbs and cholesterol at the same time!
Rating: Summary: Good if you know what you to do with all these numbers! Review: This book tells the grams of protein, carbs, fat and fiber as well as the milligrams of cholesterol and sodium in a stated portion of a given food. Both general and brand or restaurant specific foods are included. The author includes a diverse range, from fast food chains to natural food brands. There are foods in here I'd never thought of in my life (canned squid?!) What you do with the information is up to you and whatever eating plan you may be on. Straight, comprehensive reference.
Rating: Summary: I'd like to see FDA Vitamin Values Review: This is a big thick book with lots of info in it, but I'd like to see more. FDA vitamin values would be very nice. And while some brand names are included, it's by no means complete, which is why I give it three stars. However, this is a handy guide that is compact in trim size, so it's 850 page length still means it fits in a briefcase or purse.
Rating: Summary: Great book at a great price! Review: This is an invaluable reference guide! It's a convenient size and a great value. I haven't yet looked for an item that wasn't there. And in flipping through the pages I've seen a huge variety of foods that I wouldn't have thought would be there. Very complete and well written.
