Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: 3 of us have lost 12 pounds in 4 weeks each - I started at 170 lbs and went from size 16 to 13/14 so far. My husband started at 333lbs, my mother started at 162 lbs; proving that it works equally well on all body types. Recommend using the ketone strips and eating lots of Fried Pork Rinds!
Rating: Summary: Easy diet, Cholesterol is decreased Review: The author is bit on the extreme side with his claims of eating foods such as bacon, eggs, heavy cream, but the reality is that his diet was easy; I lost weight, and my cholesterol is down a bit. Not an easy book to read. Skip his gung-ho stuff; go right to the do' and don'ts.
Rating: Summary: Dr Atkins offers guidance toward lifelong weight control Review: Dr. Atkins takes a unique approach to weight loss and control with his high fat/low carbohydrate lifestyle. While the approach defies the dated dogma of the AMA "consensus panels", Dr. Atkins makes the case for his approach very eloquently. Citing many of the same studies used by the high carb/low fat camp, as well as his own extensive clinical experience, he defines a very credible model of the human metabolic process which includes the body's internal control mechanisms. This provides a refreshing contrast to the overly simplistic "more goes in, more stays in" model adhered to by low fat advocates. The low carb/high fat approach results in an interesting diet menu. The induction phase allows virtually unrestricted consumption of protein foods such as meat, fowl, fish, and eggs, coupled with satiety inducing fats such as butter and cream yield a diet experience with no hunger as well as no cravings! The other side of this "luxurious" diet is a complete restriction on sugar and processed grain. The paradox of all the eggs you can eat, but no toast, is one of the few laments of this writer's experience on the Atkins diet. The Atkins diet is a complete plan in four phases: 1) The Induction Phase, which introduces the dieter to the low carb regimen over a two week period while yielding a significant initial weight loss. 2) The Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) Phase, which is less restrictive than the induction phase and yields a more moderate weekly weight loss. 3) The Pre-Maintenance Phase, easing the dieter out of the fat burning ketosis/lipolysis state of the first two segments. 4) The Maintenance Phase, consuming the right level of carbohydrates for ongoing weight control. Together these phases form a complete roadmap for achieving and maintaining the dieter's target weight. It should be noted that Dr Atkins views this as a lifelong lifestyle change. As with any diet, success comes with behavior modification, and failure will result from recidivism.
Rating: Summary: It works. It works. It works. Review: I am a 30 yr. old male and have been overweight all my life. Since starting this program in March I have lost an amazing 56 pounds. It is quite honestly the most encouraging and positive program involving my health that I have ever experienced. I feel better than I have in years, seem to be able to concentrate better, have more energy, sleep more soundly, and have shaken those horrible bouts of fatigue that I'm so used to battling every day. What I can tell you is that for those with lots of weight to lose, this diet works. I have studied the book and others like it, read the reviews, and investigated in general the "low-carb / high-protein" concept for 6 months before starting it. If you're like me you have ridden the diet train from calorie counting to Herbalife, Fit for Life to Medi-fast, you name it I probably tried it or at least considered it. Until I read Atkins I had decided that the ONLY way I was going to get fit and stay that way was lots of exercise and a low fat "balanced" diet - clearly a good way and the prevailing choice by the medical profession, but very very slow. Life is short, I want the quality of mine to improve today. If you read the reviews on this site you will see that this diet not for everyone, most people however report success. My job requires about 75% travel which means that I have to eat in restaurants quite often, this diet is great in that respect because it is easy to eat out and still follow the program. The book explains the causes of certain symptoms and problems that are common to those of us who are overweight and shows how this diet can reverse them. Even if I wasn't losing the weight I would probably still follow the program because my overall sense of well being has increased so dramatically. This diet has been very, very, easy to follow. What I suggest: Don't consider this diet unless you have 30+ pounds to lose (from reading the reviews and studying the concept, those with more to lose seem to have a higher rate of success). Study the whole book (and others like it) and see your doctor before starting. Take vitamin supplements, exercise, and drink plenty of water every day. Make up your mind that you are committed to improving your health, and go for it. I have many more pounds to lose, but everyday, life gets better. I hope this book can help yours too.
Rating: Summary: DR. ATkins book has saved my life!!! Review: In 1986 I was admitted to the hospital in maricopa county in arizona. I weighed 525 lbs.and was on the life-support system, and given up for dead. I was there for 1 month and 3 days. I tried all kind of diets in my life;and could never find the right one. Well to make a long story short; After many years of struggle, My mother in law told us about a diet she is trying and she said she is losing weight on this diet. The diet was of course, DR ATKINS NEW DIET REVOLUTION. I weighed 350lbs when I started on this diet, and I now weigh 259 lbs. I still have 50 more pounds to go to reach my goal. I have just introduced a friend I just met a week ago to this diet[life-style], and in 5 days he has lost almost 10 lbs. My BLESSINGS go out to you DR. ATKINS. Thanks! for saving my life. GOD BLESS YOU! mr. whitesell.
Rating: Summary: This "diet" works if you stick to it. Period. Review: Heard about this twenty year old diet last New Year's (why did it wait so long to find me?).Got the book, read it, follow it faithfully along with my spouse (this helps). Middle-aged, "pear shape," male. Top weight in my recent life about 302 lbs. Weighed 285 lbs at Christmas-time 1998. Started Atkins diet in mid January 1999. Lost 49 lbs. first ten weeks. Weighed 221 lbs. last Saturday. Feel ten years younger. I'm proud, too. This is a new way of life, not a diet. Obviously, carbohydrates and sugars were killing me. I plan on weighing 195 lbs. this year. Thanks Dr. Atkins. Reader, do you need to lose weight (fat)? Go for it and stick to it. It won't hurt you and you'll be a much happier person, too.
Rating: Summary: Many answers for the person struggling with weight loss. Review: When i came to the explanation of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and how it affects weight gain, it brought tears to my eyes. I was overwhelmed by the idea that I have finally found "my answer" to my weight problem. I had been diagnosed with hypoglycemia as a young teen. I have all my life felt the fatigue, low energy, and irritability because of it. (Now i know "fatness" is also a symptom). During my pregnancies i gained too much weight, and have battled it ever since. (The last 11 years). After beginning this diet, I soon began to feel much better, and recognized how lousy I really had felt before eating the Dr.Atkins way. In addition I'm losing weight and inches. It is easy, I'm not hungry, and I no longer think about food. I am learning I don't have to have snacks with me every where I go. Eating high protein meals is the answer. Thank you Dr. Atkins. I just wish I would have had a clue before now. People in the Diet and Nutrition business need to be better educated. The facts are that all bodies are different. That darn food pyramid is NOT the answer for all humans. A balanced diet for you is not going to be the same as a balanced diet for me. I know I will never have to struggle with my weight again. I strongly recommend this book to everyone. Even if you don't have a weight problem, I'll bet you know someone who does, and it would be a great service for you to share this book with them.
Rating: Summary: I love the concept, but does it really work? Review: This book was in our house in the 1960s - 70s, and we as a family have always had a few pounds to lose. The concept is great, but something made none of us stick to it all those years ago. Now its back like its a brand new diet. I am trying it again and have noticed I initially lost several pounds, but seem to be stuck already. I would love for the Atkins diet to be the answer as it is so nice not to be hungry all the time. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get "unstuck"?
Rating: Summary: Lost 20 Pounds in 4 Weeks Review: After reading many reviews of this book I thought I'd respond. A few years ago I went on this diet after my sister-in-law lost a lot of weight on it (I have forgotten exactly how much). I lost 20 pounds in the month that I was on it, then went on the perscription diet drug, Phentermene, to lose another 60. In the last two years I've had two babies, they are 12 months apart. Between the two of them, I have 50 pounds to lose again. I am thinking about going on Atkins again, as it worked last time. I would like to use the Phentermene again but my Doctor is leary of prescribing it because of the Phen/Fen thing. Anyway, I was talking to my Obstetrician about weight loss and he recommended the Atkins diet. He said he lost 45 pounds on it. Now, he is a Doctor and he is recommending this diet, and with all of the positive reviews on here, I think I'll try it again. I just need the motivation, I'm of Italian decent and it's VERY difficult for me to stick to a low carb diet, bread and pasta are the mainstays of my diet. I will report back after my 14 day induction diet.
Rating: Summary: This diet was not for me. Review: I was on this diet for 6 days. Day1-Start. Day2-Lost 3 lbs. Day3-Gained 1 lb. Day4-Lost 2 lbs. Day5-Lost 1 lb. Day6-Gained 4 lbs. Total weight loss 1 pound. I'm done. After the first day on this diet I felt weak and tired. I experienced heart flutters, and a total loss of energy that never came back while I was on the diet. On the second day I started getting some kind of bug. I am normally a very healthy person, since I am a Medical Assistant, I know how to take care of my body. If I ever do get sick, it's very mild and my body throws it off quickly. Not this time, I have never been this sick before. I am not saying the diet made me sick, what I am saying is that my body was so out of balance, and feeling so poorly that it could not fight the way it normally does. I feel that to be healthy you need a balanced diet and an exersize program you can stick with. I have had a weight problem for about a year now and thought this diet was too easy to fail. Well, it failed me. I won't be participating in this "Diet Revolution.
