Summary: A diet that really works, if you put your mind to it.
Review: I started this diet 5 days ago and boy, were the first three days hard. I never realized how addicted I was to sugar. But I stuck to it and I have lost 7 pounds, and I feel great. I am well on my way to reach my goal of 35 pounds. The book really gives you incentive to stick to the diet. You do have to be willing to cook and have many ideas for cooking eggs different ways, or you can easily get sick of them. I am a very picky eater, but I am finding a variety of foods to eat low in carbohydrates. If you want to lose weight, don't hesitate.

Summary: Support for Insulin-Conscious Eating
Review: I read "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution" while researching my own book, "The Gourmet Prescription: High Flavor Recipes for Lower Carbohydrate Diets." Dr. Atkins has done us a tremendous service by clarifying the relationship between carbohydrate abuse, insulin resistance, and weight gain. As a physician, fellow advocate of insulin control, and author of a lower carbohydrate gourmet cookbook, I applaud his willingness to take on the nutritional establishment!

Summary: Carbo Starving! 60 Carbs a day is the lowest
Review: Hello. I am just reading this book. My flatmate said she has tried this diet over a decade ago with not such great results. She said just after the book was written the "experts" came out with a finding that less than 60 carbs a day will result in long term brain affects. After all she points out that your brain works on sugar. No sugar-no brain. It won't really effect your intelligence per say, but it could possible have adverse effects when you get older. You could suffer from Alzheimer's disease and other health related problems. I am still going to give the good doctor a try, because while these things "may occur", being over weight is also a health hazard and considering it's more relevant now than later, the risk seems to be just like any other risk; like driving to work or flying on a plane. Good luck to you all. Ps. I will let you all know my findings in the months to come.

Summary: The Book and diet is simply great.
Review: I find this diet just great. It is the first time i actually see where I have lost weight. I have a very bad back and since i lost some weight i notice my back does not hurt that much. However I ran out of the essential oils and i am new to california i am only here two weeks and dont know where to purchase these gels can you help me. I am on the diet 3 weeks now. Dr atkins office shipped the stuff to me just before i left newyork. Both my daughter and myself shared the tablets but my gel ran out since two days ago. The diet is just fantastic.

Summary: For the most part I like it but I don't know if its working.
Review: I like the feeling of being full after a meal and I do not have any carbohydrate cravings especially cereal. I have not seen a significant difference after the 2 week induction period but I am giving it more time. Its only been 2 1/2 weeks and I exercise and take the recommended supplements and also drink water. I am not sure if I am doing something wrong any advice I will welcome from anyone. I am holding a lot of water since I get my body fat taken regularly, about 1x per month. Since starting the diet it did'nt skyrocket like I thought it might. Its 16.1 and I am about 133lbs/5'5" tall. I weight train and run in the morning for cardio exercise. Any thoughts from anyone would be helpful to me.

Summary: Great for reducing cholesterol
Review: I started the diet in January of 1999. I have had three cholesterol blood test since starting. All have been less than 175 and my LDL (less than 65) has been the lowest ever and HDL the highest (62 and 65). Medication has never lowered it this low and I was taking 40mg of Zocor. However, the most weight I have taken off is 7 pounds. I have gained the weight back and have tried the 14 day starter diet numerous times with no success.

Summary: The diet works but at what cost to your cholesterol level?
Review: I have been on the Dr. Atkins diet since May 13th 1999. I have lost 25 pounds and I have lost about three dress sizes. My husband and I were so happy that I finally found a diet that works for me because I have a very big appetite. I was doing so well on the diet that I knew that this was going to be a lifestyle change for me that I could do.

Last week I had gotten a call from my Dr. regarding my blood tests. I needed to have them done again but this time she wanted me to fast first. Needless-to-say, my cholesterol started at 178 before the diet. I tested three months later it was 347 without fasting and just last week it is at 396 with fasting.

I was told to get off the diet. I am now at a loss. I am afraid that I will gain the weight back and I am really confused about what to do or even eat next.

I thought this diet was supposed to lower your cholesterol not send it through the roof. I have never in my life had my cholesterol level above 200.

I just wanted to let people know that the diet does really work better make sure you have your blood tested like the book tells you to.

I am terribly disappointed that I have to stop. Good luck to everyone else that is trying it!

Summary: Great lifestyle change
Review: I used to stringently follow the high-carb/low-fat diet, until I read this book and tried it. I could never seem to really lose a lot of weight, and I was tired, cranky, and always hungry.

Since being on the Atkins diet, my weight loss has been better than the high-carb diets, but not extraordinary. I'm willing to concede that, for the high energy levels that I've gained. I used to take naps all the time and feel so tired, but now I'm productive on 6 hours of sleep. In addition, I don't constantly snack or eat as much - only 2 meals a day and I'm full!

Atkin's ideas behind the diet make a lot of sense, and I plan on eliminating pasta and refined sugars from my diet permanently, and eat only "good" carbs (veggies, beans, etc.).

But, as a warning to those considering doing the diet - get checked by a doctor first, and make sure to take supplements. Lack of potassium in the diet caused me to have leg cramps at night. Also, my dad (who lost 45 lbs. on Atkins) started to get gout in his legs and had to see the doctor.

Overall, I think Atkins is a great starting place for those who are trying to break their addiction to carbs and sugars - but, it is a hard diet to sustain for long periods of time. I plan on switching to a modified low carb diet in a few months once I lose a few more pounds.

Summary: Get your facts straight!!!!!!!
Review: I see a lot of "atkins" bashing as far as the low- carb "thing" goes. The common denominator is the negativity about removing carbohydrates permanetly from your "diet". Well, Dr. Atkins never said to stop eating carbohydrates forever, what he said was, for the first 2 weeks don't eat any to get your body to burn the already stored fat!!!!! The plan is to get up to a level of carbs that your individual body can tolerate without gaining any weight. You negative critics have made this into a bad thing because of your lack of understanding!!!!! And also for those of you out there that are looking at this as just some diet that you are going go on and get off at some point, no, it is not for you...You have to change the way you think....this is a way of life, not a quick fix to your weight problem!
