Summary: Great for my weight...Poison to my brain
Review: The Atkins plan sure does achieve weight loss (hence the two stars instead of one), but at what cost. I lost 12 pounds in the six weeks I followed the diet, but my mood spriraled down further and further in each passing week. I know this isn't true for everyone, but I finally had to throw in the towel, and I've talked to others who have had similar experiences on Atkins. For anyone else who has experienced depression, anxiety or cloudiness on this diet, then I suggest following the food plan in either Kay Shepard's book, Food Addiction: The Body Knows, or Dr. Matthew Keene's Chocolate is My Kryptonite: Feeding Your Feelings/How to Survive the Forces of Food. Both stress foods that boost seratonin/mood as a means to controlling cravings and losing weight...in other words, you can happy, and still lose weight!

Summary: Good book made difficult by its arrangement.
Review: The diet worked and I feel great! But that was despite the book's rather torturous arrangement. Edition two is a better book than its predecessor in terms of content. Dr. Atkins really makes mincemeat out of the head-in-the-clouds medical fraternty/sorority's love affair with the dated nutritional pyramid. But why is it so hard to understand how to move from ketosis, Atkin's first stage, to stage two of the diet? Why are there lingering doubts whether eating things like prunes is OK? The book needs further editing by some simple person like myself who doesn't just need to be impressed by the Doctor's rhetoric as much as to get on with the diet.

Summary: THIS DIET IS DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH !
Review: This book is "junk science". Please, research it for yourself. It is unfortunate that so many Americans are misled by this kind of supposed dietary miracle. High protein/low carbohydrate diets are inherently unhealthy. These diets are imbalanced, they promote water (not fat) loss, they cause ketosis (which, contrary to what the book says, is a VERY unhealthy state), they are often low in fiber and high in cholesterol and saturated fat. Furthermore excessive protein may leach calcium from the bones. DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT. See if the Surgeon General, the American Heart Association, American Dietetic Association, American Cancer Society, and the American College of Sports Medicine agree with this diet "revolution". These organizations may not always be right, but they're right about this one.

Summary: Looks like a great ideabut having trouble getting started
Review: I think the book is great and Dr. Atkins has some very interesting theories but I am having trouble getting started on this way of eating. I think it needs to have more of what you can eat.

Summary: Has become a way of life
Review: I have lost 65# in 4 1/2 months, have dropped 6 sizes and have never felt better.

I read the complaints of others and want to advise them about two things. Get a prescription for potassium from your doctor - you can't get enough in the over the counter variety. Take the vitamins and essential oil capsules that Atkins recommends and eat as much allowed food as you want. The mindset of lifetime dieters is that we must deprive ourselves of quantity. That isn't true of this way of eating. I am never hungry and, in addition, eliminating sugar has killed all the food cravings I used to have, so it isn't much of a feat to resist anything anymore. The temptation just isn't there.

Most of the failures I hear about on this plan are the result of people who don't read the book or are just doing part of what is needed to succeed. Of course, every diet isn't for everyone, but even Cardiologists are recommending it to their patients.

I have booked the Atkins cruise in April because I want to investigate further the possibility of maintaining this health plan for life.

Summary: Ideas on Maintenance and Recipes
Review: I love this diet but was finding it difficult to make meals interesting. I then bought Suzanne Sommers diet books, which have lots of great low carbohydrate recipies that taste fabulous. I also like the concept of food combining which makes it a little easier to introduce Carbs back into your diet and you feel great. I recommend both of her books "Eat great, loose weight" and "Get skinny on fabulous food". Her second book "eat great..." is geared toward more protein meals but both have great recipies that are easy. I am back on the Atkins Induction Diet after a relapse, and am determined this time to reach my ideal goal. Wish me luck!!

Summary: Atkin's diet and olive oil.
Review: I've been on the Atkins diet going on 9 months & I've lost my first 107lbs which is no small onion! I did it eating for four people, but stumbled on something by accident. With all diets one runs into plateau's. A few shots of gin before bed would "jolt" me back into ketosis (the next day sometimes sooner). But olive oil made my hands and feet warmer (thermogenesis). I don"t know about other diets, but on this one olive oil burns everything I put in my mouth resulting in a higher ccl. All because of extra virgin olive oil. It's been a month with no plateau since I started taking olive oil. My CCL went from 46 grams to 58! I had to give up all caffeine because I started to have too much nervous energy. What's in olive oil? Also, I want to say thank you Dr. Atkins for saving my life in January of 1999. I almost died in the emergency room due to high blood pressure. The diet totally cured it in four months! If anyone wants to email me, my email address is DesertPhantom@webtv.netThanks, Ken Gamache

Summary: A different approach
Review: I was curious about this book to improve longevity. I got much of my previous information in another book, The Secrets of Staying Young which talked about some herbs from Russia that keep them healthy to 120. I am interested to get other long term opinions on this diet. It seems to be OK for short term result. The herbs and information on minerals and EFAs in the other book, seem to be good for long term. Dr. Atkins book is thought provoking.

Summary: Update from 7-18-99
Review: Well, I am still on the Atkins diet. My total weight loss is now 72 lbs. I have basically stated into the pre-maintance part of the plan. I still want to lose another 10 lbs, but I'm in no hurry. I really enjoy reading all the comments that are left on this site. Some feel the diet is just a fad, I on the other hand, and I'm sure that there are many others like me, know that this is a new way of eating. I know that I have to add additional carbs as I get closer to my goal, and that is exactly what I am doing. But I also realize that sugar and starches are NOT good for your body and that they should be avoided as much as possible. After you have taken these foods out of your diet for a period of time and then you eat a food high in sugar or statch, it really doesn't taste as good as you remember. I truly believe that these are foods that we learn to like and after we like them our body states to crave them. I now don't have a problem passing up the big piece of cake or that jelly donut. For I know that in 2-3 mins it will be gone and I will be left with the extra fat that it causes my body to hold onto. I would like to chat with anyone who has successfully gone through this diet and have been able to maintain.
