I followed it to the letter and did, in fact lose about 7 pounds at first. The I developed hemmrohids. Fad diets are out!

Review: I have been on the maintenence diet for close to three years now. I dropped from 210 to 183 in about 3 1/2 weeks. Only bad thing is, my old chubby clothes started falling off of me, so I had to trade all my size 38 pants to 34's! Boo Hoo. Small price to pay for BIG self esteem! Thanks, Doc!

Review: Looking at the reviews, I am amazed that most of the negative comments come from people who obviously have not read the entire book. Did they use Cliff notes in school? My cholesterol has dropped from 305 to 243 in four months. That has convinced me, and I'm going to stick with the Atkins plan to continue lowering my cholesterol, and to avoid cardiac disease. Dean Ornish only made my cholesterol and triglycerides worse, and yes, I read his book all the way through.

Review: I've tried all of the diets, and they all left me starving and unsatisfied. This diet runs contrary to what most people would imagine would work. I would never have believed I could eat steak and eggs for breakfast and the foods I really love the most for other meals, and still lose weight...But it's true. I've lost 14 pounds in the last month, my blood pressure went from 140 over 97 to 122 over 72 (taken today), and I stopped having those between meal cravings which kill a diet. I found the book highly readable and made much sense.

Review: When I went to my doctor a month and a half ago, I had just about abandoned hope for ever losing weight again. I am tired of diets! is the first thing I told my doctor when he said I needed to lose weight. How would you like to eat great but never struggle with diets again...he asked. He convinced me to read Dr. Atkins book and at least give it some consideration. I read the book and felt really excited...it seemed to be written to me personally! For ten years and more I keep having doctors tell me I have a "Metabolic Disorder" but none of them offered a solution for it other than the same old tired low calorie or low fat diets. Oodles of diets later ....I am 269 lbs. (I'm only five foot tall!), have type two diabetes and high blood pressure, also high cholesteral and tryglicerides (spelling...)and so much water in my joints I moved like a much older woman than 51 years old. I immediately went on the diet...and was on it three days by my next dr. visit. My beginning sugar was 310..and that was fasting. It had come down 100 points! My blood pressure came down 20 and I'd lost three pounds! I stuck to the induction diet. YEA!!! It's been a month and if my scales don't lie, I've lost a total of 20 lbs. I have high hopes other things will have improved when I go back to the Dr. on Oct. 10th. I can actually bend my knees without extreme pain now and am moving much better these days. I've lost a dress size, I'm sure! I really don't miss all those carbs. I thought I would. I really didn't think I'd make it this far! Thank you Dr. Atkins....you are giving me a new lease on life! I don't recommend ANY diet without consulting a doctor first! No one diet suits everyone.

I have lost about 16 lbs and still would like to lose another 2 or 3 which don't seem to budge. BUT - I have gone down 2 sizes in clothing and feel better and happier than I have in a long, long time. I NEVER acheived ketosis and gave up trying after the early weeks. Believe it or not, its tough to lose weight when you only have 20 lbs to lose. I have been on every diet known to mankind and just watched my weight gradually go up year after year especially after I turned 50. With Weight Watchers, I binged each week after I weighed in, was always hungry, and went nuts trying to count points, grams, portions, etc. This is the most wonderful lifestyle - my cravings for sweets and carbs are gone, I can eat out in restarants (avoiding bread, potatoes and rice), and I don't get the bloated, gassy stomach I used to have. I am driving my friends and family nuts with my prosletyzing about the high protein life style, but for me this has been the best thing I ever did. Try reading Protein Power and Sugar Busters for more moderate forms of the diet.

Review: I had a physical Jan of 1999. I'm 5'8" and weighed 215 lbs. My cholesterol level was 283 and for the last few years I was on a low fat diet. I estimated that I had replaced my fat intake with about 350 to 400 grams of carbs/day. Fruit, bagels, yogurt, pretzels etc. The Dr. put me on another low fat diet and told me to come back in 6 months. A friend of mine was on the Atkins diet and had lost 65 lbs, saw his blood pressure go down and cholesterol level dropped below 200. I gave it a try in April and have lost 31 lbs. My cholesterol level dropped to 240 with HDL going to 62. My Dr. was pleased and told me to continue the diet. Before my blood work they had me stop all alcohol and restricted my food intake, and in those 2 days I think I went back into Ketosis. I would like to know if that caused the still high overall high cholesterol number? Did the Ketosis put some fat into my blood stream? I can eat up to 80 to 85 grams of carbs/day without gaining weight. I would encourage anyone to try the diet but make sure you read the book.
