Summary: This diet is a recycled heap of garbage.
Review: This is the most bizarre diet ever put forth by anyone on this planet. Every one of his suggestions goes against everything that has been tried & tested & proven many times over. Go on this eating plan, and you can up your chances of heart disease, colon cancer, and high blood pressure, among other things. I cannot believe there are people in this country who are gullible enough to try this way of eating. How about if someone put out a book & told you that you could eat french fries & ice cream for breakfast, salami & pork rinds & chocolate cake for lunch, and fettuccini alfredo & hamburgers for supper? Would you all buy that??? Oh yes, I've seen the overweight people on Dateline & 20/20 testifying that they have lost weight, while showing them frying up bacon & eggs in grease, & cutting up all the meat they can put in their mouths, but they will pay for it later. No one wants to hear that to lose weight, you need to eat a balanced, healthy diet that includes whole grains, fruits & vegetables, & fish & chicken. Why anyone would buy into this stupid idea that you choose all your foods from one or two food groups & live on that is beyond belief. Dr. Atkins has been shoveling the same old garbage for 25 years, and there are still those who buy into it like it's something new. Go ahead & try this at your own risk, but make sure you have your doctor's number on your speed dial, because you are going to open yourself up to many health risks.

Summary: Also...
Review: May I recommend The Low-Carb Cookbook by Frances Monsoon McCullough for plenty of easy, tasty recipes. Foods on the diet can seem limited, but there are many combinations that are really good. I made meringues and topped them with whipped cream and appx 5 sliced strawberries for a light desert. There are hardly any carbs in this dessert and trust me, it is very delicious. Do a search for the book title on Amazon and it is listed along with a few other books. Good luck!

Summary: Had to re-read a bit, but concept easily understood!
Review: I was first introduced to the Atkins diet almost 10 years ago from a friend of mine who had wonderful success with it. I tried it and lost 8 pound on my first week. Since then, I have resorted to the diet when I feel that I need to cleanse my system of carbs and junk and lose weight in a steady manner. I empathize with those of you who have had bad experiences on this diet, but please don't tell others to not try it. Everyone's system is different. And really, anyone who is interested in the diet should consult their physician first, not a stranger who tried it and didn't like it. All of this talk about high fat food is a mute point to me. If I don't want to eat red meat and high fat cheese, I don't. I can eat very lean poultry, seafood, veal or very lean pork. To me, the whole point of the diet is to basically restrict your carbs (for the first two weeks) to almost none and then gradually increase them in 5 gram increments weekly, until you get to a point where you are neither gaining nor losing weight. This may happen for you at 50 or 70 or 100 or 150 grams per day. If you are losing too fast for your own liking, increase your carbs in 5 gram increments until your desired pace is reached. If you stop losing before you have reached your goal or begin to gain weight, then lower your carbs in 5 gram increments. I have found that I can eat whatever I want, complex carbs included, as long as it is done in moderation. For example, I don't gorge on bread and other starches every day of the week. I may have a potato 2 days per week or so. Anymore than that, and I won't lose the maximum amount of weight as quickly. But that's okay, you can lose gradually if it seems too strict for you. Simply REDUCE your carb intake, don't eliminate it if your body is reacting badly to it. This diet allows you to lose weight at your own pace. And for the record, when you have spent some time on the diet and understand how your body works on it, you most certainly can eat fruit and vegetables! Just limit fruits that have a high sugar content, such as grapes, apples and bananas. Instead, go for watermelon, honeydew and cantalope melons, strawberries, and blueberries, and other low sugar fruits. Same goes for veggies. Go for more green leafy ones. If you ask me, most low fat diets recommend the same concepts. The diet is not as bad as some skeptics (who have read the book, but haven't tried it) make it out to be. My advice: consult your physician and your physician ONLY! Don't solely rely on message boards and book reviews!

Summary: It makes perfect metabolic sense! Gall bladder beware.
Review: Although unconventional and against the grain, this book makes PERFECT METABOLIC SENSE. It's a shame he is being rejected by his colleagues and "mainstream" medical "experts". I commend Dr. Adkins for his independent thinking and his tenacity during the years of ridicule. However, it is my belief that not enough care is given to encourage increased H2O intake. Also, there was no mention of gall bladder problems in this book. High fat intake is prone to aggravate the gall bladder. Overall, I commend Dr. Adkins and recommend this book and eating habbits to those of you who have tried it all and need help.

Summary: A diet that really works.
Review: I have dieted for decades and I have gained weight yearly. I have seen many doctors, had electro-aversion therapy, hypnosis, acupuncture, done the strip mall diet centers, all with no positive long lasting result. I tried Dr. Atkins diet last year, and I have lost 37 pounds. I keep it off by using St. Johns and 5HTP, Neurosync motivationals, and use a light and sound machine to relax and focus my goals daily. I am living proof that this diet and techniques work. Buy the book and try these techniques. There is HOPE and CHANGE for you yet.

Summary: Poor organization but great information
Review: I find the information in this book very interesting and useful. I have only been on the diet a week and feel better than I have in many years! However, the organization of this book is worse than poor and some of the information is inaccurate and inconsistent. i.e. tomatoe 5 grams, tomatoe 9 grams. One would think that the editor would have suggested a better arrangement of chapters and checked the information from one chapter to another. Other than that the diet seems to be all that is claimed.

Summary: Can't argue with success!
Review: It's really difficult to argue with success! Today is October 3. I've been on this diet since July 13, and I'm down 44 lbs -- from 241 to 197. My total cholesterol has dropped significantly as well. My wife has lost 24 lbs in the same time span. I'm never truly hungry, and I don't think about snacking anymore. I really can't believe how well it's gone for me. I've recommended this diet to several friends, too, and now I'm watching them lose weight. The real key is to get thru the 1st week -- when you're getting off caffeine, sugar, and carbs all at once, it feels like detox! I was lethargic and frankly, a little stupid! But at the end of two weeks I felt great, and it's been great ever since. Get the book, give it a month, and you're likely to stick with it and lose a ton of weight.
