Summary: This diet puts you in control
Review: I must say that this diet has certainly extended my life for many years. I am 36 and 6'2" and my weight reached 330 pounds. I tried many diets, including Weight Watches and even taking some prescription medicine that almost got me addicted on them. All with very limited success.

After six months on the diet I lost 60 pounds (now I am "just" 270). I fell much better. I sleep less but better. I have more energy. I have no more cravings for food, no more acid reflux. My blood pressure dropped from 140/100 to 120/80. Total cholesterol from 200 to 154. Tryglicerides from 156 to 65. Even uric acid that was a bit high dropped without me doing anything special about it.

I really cannot find any honest explanation on why the medical establishment bashes Dr. Atkins so much. I knew about this diet since I was a teenager and have even done it successfully some 15 years ago but I was refrained from doing it again by doctors. It seems that I would grow a tail if I did it. I am sure that I would have never reached 330 pounds had I not received that kind of advice. Then, in march of this year I decided to go against this "expert advice" on the reasoning that even if this diet does harm you a bit - which I sincerely doubt - it's certainly better than to stay obese and die young. This diet puts you in control of your body. It's doable and it works.

Now something from my experience: I did not exercise. I could get away with lots of coffe and diet soda and even some distilled spirits (3~5 ounces per week ). I had some cramps in the beginning but potassium solved them. I had constipation and solve it by eating lots of green vegetables, even at breakfast. If I eat less I do lose more weight so I try not to overeat though I am never hungry. That doesn't mean I eat little: I eat between 2000 and 3000 calories a day!

The book itself could be better written and less political (his "Health Revolution" is much better). For the ones who want to read more I recommend "Protein Power", a very well written book, though I did better with Atkin's diet than with PP.

Summary: Lost 11 lbs in 9 days. No side effects. Enough said....
Review: Book is poorly written. Diet Actually works, Hard to argue with results

Summary: Seems pretty close to Sugar Busters to me
Review: I feel as if this effort by Dr. Atkins is a clone of Sugar Busters only with different recipes.

Nice try though.

Summary: This book is a Godsend
Review: Having read all the negative reviews on this site, I have a few words. I'm guessing either 1.) You didn't read the book carefully and thoroughly, 2.) You didn't try the diet for yourself or didn't wait long enough to see results or 3.) You did these things and simply blinded yourself to the facts. Let me give my side of the story. I'm probably a good 50 or 60 pounds over my ideal weight, but since this last monday, I've lost 3.5 pounds, or 3.5 pounds in 4 days. Besides that, I've had a huge energy burst and my mood has been incredibly good. I also don't deal with the minor bouts of depression I used to suffer from. I realize I've only been on 4 days, but I can't argue with what I've experienced to be true. And yes, the AMA can be very wrong sometimes.

Summary: Just having a go
Review: I have not read the complete book, but it seems to be about the original diet that humans were meant to eat *The hunter and gatherer diet* I'm willing to cut back on a lot of the things asked in the diet and eat more lean meat and veg. Ill see if it helps. I have nothing to lose except weight.

Summary: Did it before--will do it again!
Review: I did the Atkins plan for approx 1 year and lost 60 lbs. I found it easier than any other diet (and like most, I had tried them all!) I fooled myself into thinking that I could go back to eating carbs and have gained 30 lbs back. Part of this was due to a friend's comments and negative media attention to the diet. Everyone wants to believe in the current food pyramid but for me, it does not work. I just watched the recent Oprah show on the Heller's plan for carb addicts. I have also tried that. My plan this time is to start with Atkins and work my way into the Carb Addicts plan which is much easier to follow. While on Atkins, I did experience severe cravings for sugar from time to time. Perhaps because I was allowing myself alcohol about 3 times per week (which interestingly, did not affect my weight loss). I was not able to keep up with the strips and checking for ketosis. It seems that when I did check, I was only moderately into it...but I STILL lost weight! This program is not the easy way out but it is terrific for a diet! Be prepared for bad breath; strange body odors and diarrhea. Still, I can deal with that for the sake of weight loss. Good luck to all!

Summary: It changed, probably saved, our lives!!
Review: My husband's doctor recommended the Atkin's Diet to him and I joined him. As Dr. Atkins describes in this book, the multitude of benefits are experienced in short order. We started with the blood tests he suggests to get a baseline. We also chose to stay on the induction diet for two months because the results were so good and we didn't want to slow down our progress. Re-reading sections kept us motivated as we watched our need for medications for high blood pressure and diabetes be erased and saw our cholesterol numbers go from ballistic to normal in two months! The book is amazing as the reader needs to re-adjust all his previous notions and re-learn the basics of nutrition. Atkins philosophy that his diet is patterned after the natural diet available to man and that sugar is the curse of society today makes sense. We've been happy and much healthier on this lifestyle for nearly two years. We both lost and kept off about 50 lbs. We're presently back on the induction program and hope to lose a few (20 or so) pounds before the holidays. Give the diet a couple weeks before writing it off. We weren't happy with most of the recipes. Either too many strange ingredients, too many steps, or a lot of work for something that wasn't very good. However, the New England Fish Chowder is wonderful! The Hot chocolate was a staple during the first two months. The cheesecake is okay, but I found an easier and more delicious no cook recipe which I included at the end. Although one isn't hungry, the first week or so you keep opening the refrigerator or cupboards looking for something. I think a key to success is to keep a variety of foods available for snacking. We always have chicken, chops and tuna salad ready to eat and a dessert for the sweet tooth. Cheesecake Dessert 3 8oz, packs cream cheese 5 packs Equal 1 TBSP vanilla Beat together with electric mixer. Fold in 1 pint (2 cups) of heavy (whipping) cream that has been whipped. This makes 16 servings and is heaven. Less than 3 g carbohydrates each. I would love to share recipes, etc with anyone interested.......

Summary: So far so good.
Review: I started the diet two weeks ago and have lost eleven pounds. I found the layout of the book a little chaotic, however the information was excellent.

Summary: I've Only Read the First 10 Pages and Already I'm Hooked!!
Review: I haven't even gotten throught the first chapter of the New Diet Revolution, and I already can't put the book down. Maybe I don't understand all of the complex medical terminology, but only a fool would completely change their way of eating w/out first consulting a physician. One thing I do want to point out to all of the "it won't work", "it's a fad diet", "why don't you just eat right (whatever that is) and exercise" people is. When you haven't struggled with a weight problem all of your life it's easy for you to be quick to offer advice for someone else who has. If this diet does not work for you then so be it!!! But for all of the other posts that I've read thus far (and I do intend to read them all) Kudos to you and your achievements... Yes, I DO plan on beginning this WAY OF LIFE, because as long as it's looked upon as just another diet, that's how it will be treated, something you do to get results then stop. But treat it as a way of life, to change your life, for the rest of your life.
