Rating: Summary: 1.6 year anniversary-still doing great!! Review: Don't listen to the negative unmotivated critics. Meat IS natural & healthy. Plus I have no trouble finding inexpensive & delicious selections of lamb, beef, pork, ect. Ofcourse the sugarladen crap is cheaper. It should be plus you'll pay a high price in medical bills & medications for your diabetes & obesity. I am looking good & feeling great. I don't have to deal with the gas that all the high carb foods used to give me. I have better muscle tone than ever & I weigh 120 at 5'6". (You are not supposed to gorge yourself on this diet but I found I can eat more than the crummy "balanced" diet the ADA promotes.) You can make excuses or get off your adddiction to sugar.
Rating: Summary: Restrictive, boring, can't really follow it for life Review: I probably am a "carbo-addict", but that doesn't mean my body doesn't need a lot of "good" carbohydrates. Since when did eating fruits, vegetables and grains become unhealthy?! Since when is being constipated, because you don't eat enough fiber, healthy?! I found the diet to be much too restrictive - if you are a carbo-addict, then on this diet you will certainly miss your carbs! Even though I wasn't hungry all the time, it didn't take me long to get really TIRED of meat, eggs, cheese and a little bit of "permitted" vegetables....whoopee! As soon as you increase your intake of carbs again and eat even like a reasonable person would, you'll gain back the weight. And if you don't drink tons of water to get the ketones out of your body, you could easily suffer serious consequences, such as kidney or liver disease. I also had headaches, dizziness, and sleep problems. I think a modified version may work, such as cutting out "empty carbs" like candy, junk food, cakes, chips, etc. But that's what we've been told all our lives!
Rating: Summary: Easier than I thought Review: This is the first "real" diet I've ever been on. After watching my sister in law lose 20 pounds, I decided to give it a shot. I'm not much of a meat eater, so the food hasn't been too satisfying. However, I've been experimenting with the 20 allowable carbos per day and I'm doing fine. I'm a carbo & sugar addict and this is the first time since I was a newborn that I haven't craved either. This is a miracle. What helped me meet my sweet need has been sugar free jello with chopped nuts and cream cheeze. It sounds terrible, but after a few days of being on this diet, it's very tasty. Drawbacks- my grocery bill has gone up. Other than that, the benefits outweigh everything.
Rating: Summary: Balanced Diet? Review: I get a kick out of hearing people who denounce the Atkins Diet say that all one needs to do to lose weight is limit calories, eat a balanced diet and get off your duff. Well my friends, that's what the Atkin's Diet has one do. Besides the Induction Stage of the diet, the rest of it is quite liberal and flexible. When you are 100 lbs overweight, losing any weight is a major accomplishment. What is a balanced diet anyway? Some bread, some fruit, some meat, some milk, some beer, a banana split? Try eating only carbohydrates and see how you feel. The Atkins Diet is about having more energy, and feeling better. It's also about discipline and getting into the habit of eating because your hungry not because your bored.
Rating: Summary: The only diet the has ever worked for me! Review: This diet has worked wonderfully for my husband and I. In the first month I lost 14 pounds and my husband lost almost 20! After 3 months I still eat a good deal of carbs, so I'm not really missing anything on this "diet" and we are still losing!! I have lost 25 pounds and my husband has lost 30. This book has changed our lives!! Any one who needs to lose weight should try this first. You will never look back.
Rating: Summary: Not quite the perfect diet Review: While this diet is good for losing weight it's far more restricting than meets the eye. By restricting your diet of carbohydrates you can feel listless, bloated, and can develope headaches. Also, when simply eating meats and low amounts of carbohydrates it's harder to make yourself eat. While this may seem good it's even worse then simply eating less food but still having a balanced level of carbs. I think the best means to lose weight is to eat healthy and excercise. Atkin's diet may be the best fad diet on the market (I believe 20 years and going) but it's far from perfect. If it suits you you'll lose weight- if it's doesn't you may feel terrible while on it.
Rating: Summary: Did this exact diet back in college, it's the best Review: Everybody's body is different, right. This diet works great for us, but maybe not for my sister-in-law, you know. We're all just chemistry, so to figure what makes you lose weight, can be a completely different set up from what assists me in losing weight. And this one works so well, we did the exact diet back in college, it was very effective, and now that we've gotten rather "out of shape" and lack in our exercise regimen, we've found this to be great inspiration and extremely healthy for us and helps us get back on track. Enjoy the cookbook's suggested menus as well, I find them a little overwhelming as far as how much you can eat, always full, and never hungry.
Rating: Summary: Thank God for Dr. Atkins! Review: Totally amazing diet. I went from 181 pounds to 148 in 65 days (33 pounds!). I'm averaging about 1/2 a pound loss every day. For "snacks" I just eat cold bacon, string cheese, sugar-free jello... in any quantity!Everyone says I don't look like the same person anymore. I haven't weighed this less since I was 21 (I'm 29 now). One fourth of the employees at my office are now on it (after they saw what it did to me)! I'm more physically attractive, I feel better, I don't have gas, body odor, or even snore anymore! The benefits are countless.
Rating: Summary: Atkins Diet is unhealthy and expensive!! Review: I bought this book last yaer and was so excited that I could eat all the fattening foods I had stayed away from. But the diet was hard to stick to: who wants to eat meat and cheese all the time? Granted, I did lose weight, but I gained I as soon as I stopped. Also, the "free" food all require preparation and are expensive to buy. I now spend less than $40 a week on groceries, but the Atkins diet had me spending upwards of $70 because meat, cheese and other fatty foods are costly. Besides, can a diet really be good for you if your breath stinks from ketosis, you have constipation and can't eat food grown from the earth? If you need to lose a quick 10 or 20 lbs for an event Atkins is okay, but other than that, this diet is worthless.
Rating: Summary: here we go again Review: When are the overweight folks out there going to realize that "tricking" your body into losing weight is unhealthy if not downright dangerous. I get a kick out of all those reviewers who gave five stars just because they managed to drop some poundage in a few days. Sure, you could do the same by having your left arm taken off too. Instead of looking for that quick fix and seeing the old numbers drop on the scale, why not just commit yourself to limiting calories, eating a balanced diet and getting off the old duff?
