Rating: Summary: On second day Review: I only gave it 1 star because Ive just started using it, so I have no judgement yet. Can someone email me and tell me why I keep hearing that Ketosis is dangerous to the body. So how can he advocate it? I really want to have results on this "diet" but I am finding it hard to do, and I am thinking about quiting. And for everyone who has claimed weight loss, did you incorporate exercise in it or not. If you didn't please let me know. Also does anyone know of a web site for support or to have questions answered. PLEASE WRITE BACK
Rating: Summary: Proof in Bloodwork and on scale...... Review: Dieticians, nutritionists and doctors can offer all the skepticism they want. I have proof in my blood work and on the scale.... I had my cholesterol checked July 29, 1999. Cholesterol was a whopping 293. Triglycerides were 186. LDL was 208 and HDL was 43.5. I started the "diet" August 25th. September 29th I had my blood work redrawn..... Cholesterol went from 293 to 168! Triglycerides were 208 - now 69! LDL was 208 - now 102 and HDL was 43.5 - now 48.5. I "cheat" occasionally but get right back to eating low carb. the next day. I feel great, have lost 35 pounds and am looking forward to losing more.
Rating: Summary: This diet has worked for me Review: It's true that this diet may not work for everyone, but it has worked for me. I've been overweight as long as I can remember, and went to great lengths to try to loose weight, including bulimia and any other stupid fad that was out there. When I got married, my husband helped me stop this, but being a devoted low-fat dieter, I was still gaining weight, slowly, but steadily. A friend of mine started this diet and looked great, so I asked her about it and then I BOUGHT the book and READ IT CAREFULLY, TWICE. I then started the diet and IT WORKED. Almost a year later, I feel great, look great and am almost at my goal. I've taken the diet slowly and enjoy many fruits and vegetables while loosing pounds and inches. At 5'3, I've gone from a size 18 to an 8-6. Those results impress the heck out of me! P.S. To all you detractors, of course you'll gain if you go back to your old eating habits! DUH! That's what got you in trouble in the first place.
Rating: Summary: Okay people...Listen up!!!! Review: I read this book about 2 years ago at which time I will admit, I thought it made a whole lot of sense, but I lacked the motivation to actually put it to the test. Also, I was a little skeptical and bothered by the almost complete restriction of veggies. Since then, I've discovered the Protein Power Plan and must give Dr.Adkins his due. He made the discovery and the Drs. Eade [creators of the Protein Power Plan] have simply taken what doesn't work, added veggies and suggested leaner cuts of meat to make the plan a healthier one,and there's not a soul alive that can tell me that this plan does not work and will not work for absolutely EVERYONE! For starters..some people who have claimed it doesn't work are cola addicts. HELLO!..SUGAR SUGAR SUGAR..even diet sodas are so sweet that they can trick your insulin to activate and act adversely on your body. I am not yet 2 months into this plan and have lost 22 lbs. I have been experiencing a severe problem with acne since my last born and everyone including my doctors were convinced it was hormonal. Well, since beginning this food plan, my acne has almost completely cleared up. A perk I wasn't expecting, but am very ,very excited about. As to constipation..NONE...NADA...NIL! I choose my veggies carefully. I can have 1/2 plate of broccoli or cauliflower. Or a ton of cabbage or lettuce or spinache-or 10 spears of asparagus[my personal favorite]. These veggies contain the highest amount of fibre with the least amount of carb content and this is what I eat with my lean cut of meat. I must say this now, I eat healthier now than I ever have in my entire life, and my weight problem developed after I quit smoking and was told that I must drop the protein and fat and increase the carbs. NO AMOUNT OF EXERCISE made any difference at all in my weight. Since beginning this plan, I have lost 7 1/2 inches off my waist and 5 inches off my hips. I have far more energy and am much happier than I have been in almost a decade. I have since had my blood pressure checked and my Dr. almost fell on the floor from the numbers. Apparently my blood pressure is that of a 15 yr. old, and I am 33 and weighed in at 203 lbs when I began. I have, according to my first aid instructor, a "beautiful radial pulse" and have normal to below normal cholesterol and tryglicerides. I lost 6 lbs in the first week! I still have an occassional dessert just cause I feel like it and sometimes have cheesies for a snack. For all of you struggling, I implore you, give it a try. It WILL work. PROMISE! But you must follow it like it says and don't cheat too often. I fully endorse the Protein Power Plan, and also feel that the Adkins diet is okay too. Just remember-muscle cramps?...TAKE POTASSIUM!!! Good luck and greater success!!!!!And don't forget those multivitamins! We have so oversterilized the soil we grow our veggies in that they have virtually no vitamins anymore! Good luck and greater success!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Dr. Robert C. Atkins.... a true Genius! Review: Dr. Atkins has found the key to the diet puzzle. I have followed his instructions implicitly and reaped my reward. I lost thirty pounds over a four month time frame and have easily maintained my weight since for five months at my desired level. My blood work at my annual check up was the best it had been in years. My doctor asked what I had been doing differently and I told him "Atkins Diet", his response was, "Isn't it amazing". Thank you Dr. Atkins!
Rating: Summary: It works for me! Review: Having started the induction diet late in July and still watching what I eat according to the book's advice, I've lost 30 lbs. to date. I read the book before starting and reread it as time went on. I've also kept up with the many written articles on the diet as well as those TV programs that also inform about its dangers. I have faith because "seeing is believing". Good luck to all of you who are starting on this diet.
Rating: Summary: A very effective diet! Review: The diet is working great but on the sixth day my pulse went up to 75 and it feels like my heart is beating too fast. The faster pulse, which used to run around 60-65, is making me breathless and I feel so tired. Has anyone else had this feeling while on the diet?
Rating: Summary: What a fantastic way to lose weight! Review: I was on the diet strictly for about 8 months and lost a total of 54 lbs. Those who say that you gain all the weight back once you are off the diet are wrong. The secret is to slowly add carbs back into your diet, yet never go back to the carb intake level that you were at prior to the diet. As soon as you start to gain a pound or two, go back on induction for a week ( or less!) and you're back where you want to be. My blood pressure is 109/69, my cholesterol is fine, and I no longer get the mid-day slump. In short, I'm not someone who is writing this review after only being on the diet for a few days. I've been on the diet for about a year and 1/4, I've kept the weight off, and I still haven't gotten sick of meat and cheese! My opinion is that those who complain about this diet (i.e. I get sick of meat, etc.) are those who don't want to lose weight badly enough. As in anything in life, losing weight sucussfully takes an amount of determination and self-responsibility. Thank you, Dr. Atkins!
Rating: Summary: DON'T BELIEVE ALL YOU READ! Review: I have used this diet for more than 6 years and continue to maintain my 80 pound weight lose. My blood pressure in as low as it was in high school (110/68), my cholesterol, triglyceride, everything is much lower than it was before. Much lower than my brother who has been a vegetarian for the last 3 years and he has lost only 10 lbs in that time. Remember, 10 years ago doctors and specialist berated a doctor that said ulcers were cause by bacteria. Now it is accepted fact that 90% are caused by bacteria. So the experts are not always right. The diet restricts carbos, but doesn't eliminate them, drink plenty of water, take suppliments. People that say you will only gain when you go off this diet are right. This is no different than any diet program. Go off the low cal, and you will gain weight. Look at this as a life style change, not a diet. If you don't like to eat red meat, eat plenty of fish. I use protien shakes as snacks. There is plenty of variety if you look at all sources of protien. Read the whole book first, develop a plan to follow, and stick to it. The book is straight forward , not hard to read, easy to understand and follow. Ignore the dietician who have promoted the low cal high carbo diet as obesity has climbed to record highs. Meat (ie protien) consumption is as low as it has ever been, but we have more cancer, fatter kids and adults than ever. If low cal high carbo works for you fine. It is not for all. The book answers many question and gives solutions to the problem of obesity.
Rating: Summary: I can't argue with success Review: I picked up the book with a mixture of skepticism, desperation, and earnest hope. I had ballooned up to an unhealthy weight and was getting no results with any other diet or exercise program. I have been practicing the principles laid forth in the book, and in 6 days, I have lost over 6 pounds. Not only have I lost weight, I have lost the extreme mood swings, sluggishness, and intense cravings for carbs (bagels, chips, tortillas, bread, etc)- I have no desire to binge, and I am seldom hungry. Do I miss a buttery baked potato? sure, but not as much as I miss a thinner me. This program has given me the tools and the belief that I can reach that goal; I give this one a thumbs up.
