Summary: Diet works!
Review: I started the induction diet on 9/8/99 and as of 11/6/99 I have lost 40 lbs, cholesterol is down and blood sugar is down. I gave the book 4 stars, but I give the plan 5+. I have another 160 to go in order to hit my target, but I can do this! No more cravings for this former chocoholic and carbo maniac. The protein satisfies me. Talk to your doctor of course. No diet is for everyone...

Summary: Not For Me
Review: This diet really sounded good when I read all these reviews, but it turned out that "...less than 20 grams of carbs a day..." was not the way for me to go, personally. Since I got an OK ahead of time from my doctor, (I have very high blood pressure), I was not expecting the extreme reaction that I experienced with this diet. I was very faithful to the Induction Diet, but the color on the Ketostix never changed even a bit. I have no doubt that many people have experienced excellent results, but I wasn't one of them. I transferred to the Heller's 'Addict's Diet', and began losing weight and feeling better immediately. I was also a little perplexed when I called (and e-mailed) the Atkins Center help line with specific questions, and only received a standard FAQ booklet, along with a "Holiday 1999 Catalog" including $134.00 Starter's Paks, diet bars, shakes, syrups, pills, pills, pills, and a $45.00 cheesecake! I want to lose weight, but I don't want to go bankrupt on the way! (even though the tote bag WAS very tempting...)

Summary: Dr. Atkins, "El Mejor"
Gracias Dr. Atkins.

Summary: I feel sorry for all of you believing this...
Review: So glad Dr. Atkins has caused so many people to become so utterly fixated on food. Obsession of food intake is not healthy. Losing a pound a day is not healthy. Please stop this before you get sick.

Summary: Proceed with caution
Review: I do believe this diet can work, but it's not for everyone - and not for me nor my husband. We followed it religiously for 2 weeks. The first week we both lost 1 lb per day - great. The 2nd week my husband started gaining weight - we still don't know why. I felt nauseous and ill the entire time I was on the diet, despite nutritional supplements, etc. The upshot is, this diet enabled us to cut out sugar and severely restrict carbs from our diet. However, we now eat vegetables (except corn, carrots, and potatoes) and 1 pc. fruit per day and feel much healthier. This diet was just too extreme for us. We now follow a diet similar to the Sugar Busters diet and feel much better than we did on Atkin's diet.

Summary: So far, so good!
Review: After reading many of the "cheers and jeers" I feel compelled to add my two cents. First of all, I have battled weight, food, and a low metabolism my entire life. I am an emotional eater who is addicted (physically) to carbs. I don't believe that any one diet is good for everyone. People are different, as is their body chemistry. I have only been on the diet for 3 weeks but as far as I am concerned I have found something that works for me. I no longer obsess about food. I eat three squares a day without feeling hungry and I feel better than I have in a long time. I don't expect to follow this plan for the rest of my life. There will come a time when I will re-introduce fruits and vegetables. But, for me I will more than likely need to steer clear of breads, pastas and other carbs, as they are the biggest triggers for me. At this point however, I am willing to be a little extreme in my methods of getting to a healthy weight than to deal with the risks of being severely obese. I will continue with Atkins' until it no long helps in obtaining my goal. I too had some negative reactions to the diet my first week, but they passed as soon as I withdrew from all the sugar and carbohydrates that I was consuming. I wish everyone on this plan good thoughts and for those who are unable to follow it for whatever reason, I hope you find something that works.

Summary: Worked for an exotic dancer
Review: I really enjoyed this book. I am an author, a Chi Gung master, and an exotic dancer and I thought I would try this diet to see if it could get me to the look I really needed in my line of work. It worked for me!

Summary: Lo Carb's the Answer But...
Review: This diet taught me about lowering carbs - I totally agree that Americans today eat far too much sugar-based product, and unfortunately that has ruined them for eating "good" carbs like fruits and hi-carb veggies that are wonderful, like carrots, broccoli, etc., in large quantities.

I did this diet when I was in my twenties and lost about twenty pounds and looked great. Unfortunately, I found I couldn't gag down another cow, chicken or dairy farm if my life depended on it after two months. Thus, I gained most of the weight back pretty quickly. Part of the problem is that knowing you can't eat carbs makes you crave them all the more.

Currently doing the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet and finding it far easier. With the Atkins diet, despite all the water-drinking and eating all the protein I wanted, I felt lousy - dizzy, exhausted, irritable - but after a few days on the Carb Addicts Diet I'm doing fairly well.

Once again - these things are merely TOOLS for education. I treat my body like a health experiment in progress, and the big decisions have to come from me, not some so-called expert who wants to make big bucks from a best-selling diet book, which, sorry to say, I believe Dr. Atkins and the Hellers who wrote the Carb Addicts book are. When I read interviews with Dr. Atkins in which he called someone who eats a toast or carrot-inclusive breakfast "dumb," I think he sounds kind of abusive.

In fact, I do believe the Atkins Diet is basically harmful for people, and, since I am a vegetarian (I do eat fish) I think it's also disgusting - all that consumption of animal flesh makes me shudder. Believe me, I was a big meat-eater most of my life, but I realized that it was time to stop slaughtering animals when there were so many healthy alternatives to protein consumption in our clever culture.

Also - since I got off meat, pork and chicken I have none of the arthritic symptoms I used to have and no food allergies, including Irritable Bowel Syndrome and mouth soreness after eating certain foods. I think it was the chemicals in all that meat and chicken.

Still, I gave this diet book three stars because I think Atkins is largely responsible for the awareness that carbs are big culprits in our national weight/overreating problem.
