My once high blood sugars are normal, my cholesterol has dropped, my blood pressure is normal, and I have maintained a weight loss of over 25 lbs--while going through menopause!However, I really HATE the way that Dr. Atkins makes it sound like he invented this diet, and I hate even more the very poor way he explains it and the fact that he uses a snake-oil salesman tone to make it sound much easier and much less complex than it really is. His approach has caused thousands of people to abaondon the diet because they couldn't get it working for them, or because his approach is so extreme they couldn't get started. He has also singlehandedly alienated the health establishment with his sloppy science and self-promotion. This has kept doctors from realizing that the low carb approach, as odd as it sounds, avoids heart disease and can stop type II diabetes in its tracks--for anyone who, like myself, is insulin resistant. "Protein Power" by the Dr. Eades couple is a much much better book that will give you everything you need to get started. If you are a type II diabetic, do yourself a favor and get "Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution," by Dr. Richard Bernstein, which gives you the details on how to use an ultra low carb diet to avoid diabetic complications. Then after you've done your reading, visit the alt.support.diet.low-carb newsgroup for help in fine tuning this diet and making it work. There are dozens (hundreds?) of folks there who have low carbed for years and can attest to the healthy effects that low carbing has had on their bodies--complete with before and after lab results.

Review: I have been struggling with my weight for thirty years. Just about the time I would lose 35 lbs. I would immediately regain the weight. NO medical doctors were able to give me a satisfactory answer ... little did I know that their training at university and hospital does not consider nutritional information as important curricula. Sad but true! This updated and revised book is working for me. I find new energy and the pounds are dropping. This time around I will be able to maintain my goal weight because the medical explanations and annedotal reports in this work provide me a valid reference. I would recommend a quick read followed by a yellow pen to mark the important ideas for you personally. If YOU spend just14 days your life will change for the better and you will become a advocate for Atkins' Diet! (kwg)

I was very skeptical when i first purchased the book, but now very glad that I did. I read the book from cover to cover and still use it as a reference. Very informative and so easy to do. I still have a ways to go but this is the easiest diet I have ever tried and hopefully it will be my last. Try the 14 day induction of this plan...that is long enough to know if this is the diet that can change your life. I don't know what the hype is about. You lose weight for a couple of days, tell everybody, then you feel sick all of the time. By then, everyone else has told everyone and on it goes. I bought into it and am I sorry.

My one problem is as an african, most of the diet reciepes i grew up with and have learnt to cook consisit largly of carbs, and i still cannot figure out the content of some african food like plantain(large sort of ripe bannana)which is usually peeled diced and fried. Some say it is carb some say it is protien, if someone out there knows pls inform me. apart from that this new diet has encouraged me to cook and be creative and to eat more salad alond side meals, and that cannot be bad!

Review: I had never believed in diet plans and so have never been on one. I don't consider the Atkins Plan a diet. Simply, it asks you to initially reduce carbohydrate intake for the first few weeks and then later begin to reintroduce moderates amounts of carbos. All the while, you get to enjoy a large variety of great tasting food. The amazing thing is that this plan works and can be used for a lifetime. The health benefits are significant. My brother was classified near diabetic and placed on medication. Several weeks later he went on the Atkins Plan. The first week of this year he went back for a follow-up exam. He didn't tell the doctor what he was doing, only that he excercised three times a week and was watching what he eats. The doctor replied, "I don't care what you're doing, just keep it up." All blood tests were within normal, blood sugar dropped from over 600 to 154. My sister-in-law is now on the plan and is losing weight, has more energy and is happy. I've lost a few needed pounds and am healthy and happy. Yes, I do miss a piece of fresh baked bread now and then, but it's okay. There are more important things in life.

I am amazed as to how much u can eat, and how quickly u seem to not be hungry! I have only been on the diet for 3days and i can already see a difference, in appetite etc....

Review: Dr. Atkins has done dieters a fine service. But for my money, I prefer D.J. Tice's 'Minnesota's Twentieth Century: Stories of Extraordinary Everyday People.' You needn't be from Minnesota (or even know where Minnesota is!) to appreciate these elegantly crafted accounts of lives otherwise little-remembered. The chapter on the Influenza Epidemic of 1918 is alone worth the price of the book. And let us never forget the Duluth lynching of 1920. You've forgotten already? That's why you need this book. Five stars.

Review: I read this book with great interest in loosing weight, and life style change. What I came away with is some information, and the opinion that Dr. Atkins is truly in love with himself. He can do no wrong. It seems that all he is interested in is selling his products. To of course get you to lose weight. However this can be done without his products. He may have helped alot of people, but I for one see through him. I do believe there is alot to the low carb. weight loss. I just do not need Atkins way. He is way too arrogant for my taste! The foods that he suggest you eat are not part of most peoples budget. If you take the information for what it is, it can be very helpful. It's just not gospel!
