Summary: Atkin's Proof is in the readership!
Review: Many people complain that he has no scientific results to back up his claims. However, why else is his book a #1 Best Seller? If his product didn't work, people would not use it. And people who complain that it does not work, simply didn't follow it. You simply can't have carbs in your diet. It's tough at first, but when I have the choice if eating as much steak as I want for dinner or a bowl of pasta with nothing on it, which are you going to choose? I have been on the diet for 2 weeks now and I lost 10 pounds the first week, and 5 so far this second week. I was even following the old book and just ordered his new one. He does an excellent job of helping you make it work in the real world, by giving you examples of things you can eat if you go out, and setting different levels if you can't follow his most restrictive plan.

If you have found that other diets leave you craving and tired, then switch to this diet. I have never been happier, or healthier!

Summary: Don't even try this diet!
Review: I tried Atkin's for a month. I managed to lose 10 pounds, but guess what, after a holiday weekend I gained all 10 back in a matter of 5 days. That is because once your body goes into ketosis and you eat normally again, you gain more weight than ever because your body chemistry is screwed up. Not only that, it was just water weight I lost. You will not lose fat permanently on this diet. The ONLY way to lose fat for good is to cut calories (but emphasize protein and fiber) and exercise. I have since done that, and am losing weight. Even better, if I do cheat once and a while, I don't gain the weight back!

Summary: Use This Book as Training For Your Personal Eating Plan
Review: When I read this book, I was shocked at first; here is a method that turns "conventional wisdom" about dieting on its head (that's why this book offends so many "nutritionists", it violates principles they've long accepted as gospel)! But, I'd known many people who had been successful at it, so I decided to give it a try. Sure enough, six weeks and thirty five pounds later, I can say that there really is something here.

My advise to anyone with a weight problem would be to read the book and give it a serious chance without breaking the rules, then learn its lessons and apply them to their own weight loss program. As far as "lessons go, I'd specifically mention the following:

1. There are two ways to lose weight. One is to reduce the amount of calories one consumes until the body is not able to maintain its short-term fuel, causing long-term reserves to be burned instead (and weight loss). The other way (I've learned from this book) is to lower carbohydrate intake to the point that the body automatically begins using long-term reserves, due to the hierarchy of how the body processes food. Which method is best for you? That's up to you. But at least this book arms you with the knowledge of how your body processes work.

2. The one thing that virtually all diet experts agree upon is that refined sugars and simple carbohydrates are bad. No matter how you choose to eat, that fact should tell you something. (Interestingly enough, those two items make up the great majority of "junk" foods produced by the food industry...and therein lies the secret of understanding why things are the way they are). This book teaches you to eat real food!

As to my own experience with the Atkins Diet: Yes, I felt awful the first week. But that experience is short-lived, the body adapts, and the results have generally been positive. Will I remain eating this way all my life? Doubtful...I can't see myself eating meat like this forever. But whatever I do, I'll have greater control over my weight than ever before, because I have a better understanding of how weight gain happens than I ever had before. This book has given me that.

Summary: Good information, but the diet is too restrictive
Review: I thought the information presented in this book was very interesting and useful. First of all, it blasted the low-fat diets (which also don't work for me) completely out of the water. Secondly, it pinpointed a major flaw in my previous diets, in that I ate too many (low-fat) carbohydrates, and too few of the types of foods that fill you up for longer. I also discovered that the carbohydrates I'd been eating, especially the ones high in natural or refined sugars, wreaked havoc with my glucose levels. The most amazing thing to me, was that its claims of significantly reducing your hunger between meals were absolutely true.

It worked for me at first, but in the long run, the diet was too restrictive. During my first 2 weeks on the induction diet, I lost 9 pounds, and was very excited. However, after my initial success, my weight loss slowed drastically, and I only lost 2 more pounds over the following 6 weeks. I had an intense craving for carbohydrates, which had nothing to do with hunger, or lack thereof. It was so bad, the smell of toast from the office break room had me salivating. I would have done just about anything for a slice of toast, which wasn't even my favorite carb before the diet. Needless to say, my efforts failed shortly after that point, and I am still searching for a plan that works for me.

All in all, though the diet eventually failed for me, I came away with some valuable lessons learned. I would recommend this book for that reason alone.

Summary: DEVELOPED HEART DISEASE!
Review: I thought all these protein books were super until I got my annual exam and had my cholesterol level checked. It turned out it had become sky high and that I had made my heart disease worse! THIS BOOK IS NOT HEALTHY! Don't buy it. It's not worth risking your life for this scam book. The so-called "doctor" should be ashamed of himself. My personal doctor suggested a book by Gary Rempe and it worked really well and actually improved my health a lot in the process. Don't waste your money and your life on this book by Atkins.

Summary: To the point and easy to understand
Review: The diet didn't work for me, but a co-worker of mine has had stupendous results. Atkin's book is easy to read and he presents medical terminology and concepts in a manner that is easy to understand regardless of your knowledge of science or biology.

Many of the concepts just make sense, especially for someone like me that comes from a family with a high incedence of diabetes and low blood sugar.

Atkins cites many medical reports and findings in his book, but I was dismayed when I recently saw him on C-SPAN being interviewed with other prominent doctors. The doctors were asking him to cite evidence that his diet works as well as he claims and he said, "We don't have any scientific proof yet, but we hope to have some soon." What! His book clearly states that he has documented proof over the 25 years he's been running his center.

Although the book is quick, easy reading, it's a bit much to read Atkin's constant self references to his superiority to other doctors and "wrong" opinions. I still gave the book 3 stars due to it's straight-forward approach to what makes us addicted to carbohydrates and how to avoid them.

Atkins clearly states that while the diet works for most, it won't work for all, but it's hard to know for sure since he recently stated on television that he doesn't have scientific proof that it works at all.

Summary: Read it, then read it again
Review: I am simply astounded by the number of people who blatantly mis-state and/or completely ignore the concepts and methods presented in this book. My advice: After purchasing the book, the intention is that you actually READ it rather than using it for a doorstop.

I just read a statement that Dr. Atkins claims vegetables and fruit are bad for your health. That is simply not true, and this is only one example of someone who either has very poor reading comprehension or has blamed the author for their own failure to follow the diet.

It's working extremely well for me. In 18 years of attempts, I have never been successful on a low-fat diet unless I starved myself. This invariably lead to a complete obsession with food. I remember weeks of consuming 1,000 calories a day of only carbs and protein and working out strenuously two to three hours a day, every day. My reward at the end of every week was the loss of maybe one-half a pound, if I was lucky. And we all know that one-half a pound is so little that it could easily consist entirely of water. There was no way I could maintain that kind of lifestyle, and I'd gain back the little I had lost with interest.

With the Atkins diet, I am never, ever hungry and I no longer even think about eating. Now that I know what takes place in my body when I consume carbs, especially refined sugar, I am so turned off that I don't even want to see a donut, let alone eat one. I'm losing fat and I feel fantastic. My carb cravings are completely gone.

Read the book, make a commitment to follow the diet exactly, then read the book again. It is not a prison; it can be customized once you reach your goal. Like any weight loss program, you just don't get something for nothing. ...

Summary: The King from Fishers
Review: I have tried to lose weight for years. Yes, I tried the lowfat diets. Always checking every label to note the actual fatcontent. The grams, not the percent which is very deceiving. When Olestra came out, I thought, "now I can eat potato chips". Wrong. So at 192 pounds (I'm 5'9") I decided to try the Atkins diet. I was excited as usual because there were alot of things in the diet that I enjoy eating. However, the results were OK at best. When I went to the doctor for a physical, I had a moderate weight loss and he said it was alright to continue the diet. I also read that a little wine is actually good for the heart. So I was drinking a "little" wine every day. Probably 3 or 4 glasses. I decided to give the Atkins one more chance, but this time, without the wine. BINGO! I am now down to 167 and shooting for 155. The wine must have put me over the carb limit. Good luck with your version of the Atkins. END

Summary: The main comment
Review: It appears that the main comment regarding the Atkins Diet (when you go back to old eating habits) is you gain the weight back. DUH! You also gain the weight back on EVERY diet when you go back to your old eating habits. I am pre-diabetic and this eating regime is faboulous! I lost 30 lbs and when a pound or two creep back on due to poor eating habits (I am human) I go back to less carbos and I feel better right away.

Summary: Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution
Review: This was the best research I've read in 25 years! My husband and I lost a total of 150 lbs. on it 25 years ago, but went back to regular eating and gained it back. This time I read it cover-to-cover twice and am using the lifetime approach and it is so easy and so great. Lost 67 pounds easily while eating great and feeling great. Maintenance is a piece of cake (low carb, of course). Found a DRD in our adopted daughter which changes her personality completely!
