Rating: Summary: This diet made us sick! Review: You lose weight and don't feel hungry. But, the diet made both my wife and I so sick by the end of the 4th day, we stopped it. Ketosis, which occurs by the third day, is BAD for your body!Don't do this diet!
Rating: Summary: THIS DIET WORKS!!!!! Review: I started this diet in March of 2002. As of this morning, I have lost 50 lbs. I only have 10 pounds to go until I reach my goal!!! I have tried numerous diets in the past, but this is the only one that has worked. The weight loss was very slow at first because of all the prescriptions I was taking, but eventually I was able to stop taking all of my medications. I had depression, high blood pressure and allergies; all of which have gone away since doing this diet. My blood pressure stays around 120/80 and that's without exercise!!! This book really motivates you, especially when he tells you you're not alone and that some people are resistant to weight loss (as I was). The key to this diet is to not give up. You have to tell yourself you're going to lose weight and stick to it!!! Don't think you can do it for a week or two and go off of it. You have to stick to it. It has taken me 10 months to lose 50 lbs., but it was so worth it. I love the compliments I get now and I feel so much better about myself. This diet will also teach you how to eat healthier for life. This diet is a way of life and I know I can stick to it from now on because I feel better than I have in years. Do yourself a favor and make the best New Year's Resolution you possibly can, make this your healthiest year ever by doing this diet!!!
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: This book really explains everything you would ever need to know about this diet. It's a great book.
Rating: Summary: Don't listen to the naysayers. Review: As you have probably recognized by now, those who write negative reviews of this book are in the extreme minority. That fact alone is evidence that this program works. But if you read the naysayers' reviews, many of them are rambling diatribes telling you how the Atkins diet is so extremely dangerous that you are sure to drop dead of a heart attack, not to mention having to go on dialysis when your kidneys shut down. I even read one negative review which told me that my eyes would turn yellow! The problem with these peoples' assertions is that they produce not one shred of credible clinical evidence to back them up. If you're going to make such assertions, then point me to the documented clinical cases of all these terrible things happening to Atkins devotees. This diet has been around for a long time now, so there has been ample time for documentation of such effects if they existed. I have also heard critics of the Atkins program say that it has a poor rate of weight loss retention. However, I have seen no empirical data which would indicate that it has a "poorer" rate than any other weight loss program. The simple fact is that many people are going to gain all the weight back regardless of the program they utilize, because they revert back to the eating habits which made them overweight in the first place. Therefore, recidivism is caused by a defect of the person's behavior, not the program they used. This diet works, plain and simple. It allows you to eat until satisfied, which keeps you from giving up due to having to go hungry. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: It works for me ,nice and slowly Review: This is my third or fourth time reading the book just to make sure I am doing things right. Starting at 93 kilograms ,I now am at 87 kilograms in just over 6 weeks. So about 1,5 lbs per week . This is the only eating lifestyle that does anything for me. Two years ago I did this diet but got off track but still lost about 10 lbs in a month orso. I,m sticking with it now and realy take my time to lose it all ! It all in the mind you know :-).
Rating: Summary: He didn't do it right! Review: The guy who said he lost 20 pounds but felt horrible wasn't following the guidelines of the Atkins diet. You're not supposed to pig out on meat just because you can. You're supposed to eat moderately. I seriously doubt eating a pound of bacon for breakfast is very moderate. I'm just starting the diet and I already have a lot more energy. I had to try it after I saw my friend, who has already lost 30 pounds after about 3 months. This diet is safe, healthy and a great way to lose weight--if you do it correctly.
Rating: Summary: I lost 20 pounds, but felt terrible. Review: He's on to something, but not quite there yet. I lost 20 pounds, but felt terrible. Dr. Atkins outlines his diet featuring no carbs, but as much fat as you want. I ended up eating a pound of bacon for breakfast, and decided this wasn't such a good idea. I recommend you go see a dietician instead. Of course, it COULD work for you. The book takes a simple idea and repeats it over and over again, until you are convinced it will work for you. Not a great read, but I guess that is not the point.
Rating: Summary: Thank you for clearing it up Review: I sent in a short review, myself, explaining that Dr. Atkins did not have a heart attack (as erroneously stated here by a recent reviewer) but rather an infection in his heart. That review didn't make it on here (at least not yet), so thank you to the people who cleared that up. It is unfortunate when people spread rumors that are untrue and do that kind of damage. Hopefully it won't happen again.
Rating: Summary: Dr. Atkins is right and his critics are wrong. Review: This is a well written book that explains (some of) the theory behind the famous Atkins Diet, and how to behave on the diet. It is easy to read and understand. Please note that I am nobody's medical expert, nutritionist, or doctor. The comments here are those of a layman. As far as the content goes, in my experience this diet works precisely as Dr. Atkins' book says. I am a busy kind of guy (attorney) just like many of you. For me, a diet has to have two elements: I can't go around feeling hungry or weak while on it, and it has to work relatively quickly. Well, this diet does both. After about 2 days on the diet I experienced what can only be described as a burst of energy. I literally never feel hungry now that I am on this diet, even at mealtime, and I go through the day never feeling that ghastly weak, craving feeling that a lo-calorie regime entails. This was vitally important to me--during the day and frankly all the time, I simply must feel energised. This diet provides that in spades. As far as results go, all I can say is that results exceed all expectations. I'm back to where I was before I decided that there was a problem. I'm wearing suits I simply couldn't wear a month ago. Suits that have hung in my coatroom, staring balefully at me, for the past several years. I was on this diet for 7 years back in the 1980s and finally went off it in the late 80s because weight ceased being an issue in my life (the diet worked so well). I now see that going off of it was a mistake. I won't be repeating it. This diet is not really a diet. It is a way of life. The only downside to this diet is that you really have to watch what you order in restaurants. Restaurants love to put carbohydrate sauces and dressings on everything, and you have to watch that. However, this book tells you how to manage this problem. I eat in restaurants every day and I manage fine. This book is the only diet book I've ever seen or heard of that is worth a darn. If you are having trouble managing your body weight (and who, after age 40, is not?) this book deserves your attention.
Rating: Summary: He did not have a heart attack Review: Please do not post things that are not true. Dr. Atkins developed an infection inside his heart. He picked up the infection while on a camping trip. This diet works very well, and I've noticed that most of those who criticize it did not go on the diet themselves, but are speaking from a knee-jerk reaction (or "hearsay"). People should not rate this diet unless they have actually been on it. Read the reviews; all these people the diet worked for (and experienced dramatic improvements in their health) cannot be wrong.
